This distinction is useful if you have a setup you already understand in one mode. The code saves you from recreating that arrangement, but it does not make Career behave like an Ultimate Team match or override the gameplay tuning attached to the mode. If the imported tactic feels quicker, slower, more demanding, or less predictable, first check the mode and preset before concluding that the code was applied incorrectly.

EA says accepting a Tactical Suggestion retains your current formation. That matters if you are adjusting a saved setup: a suggestion need not replace the formation you already chose. It also means a suggestion and a formation change should not be treated as the same operation when you are trying to preserve a familiar shape.
How Competitive and Authentic change the feel of a tactic
EA describes Competitive as tuned for added responsiveness and higher player control, primarily for online modes such as Ultimate Team and Clubs. Authentic is designed around realism and a more true-to-life match tempo. The contrast affects how a tactic feels in play, even when its saved structure is unchanged. EA’s gameplay notes describe the two presets as different design targets, not simply two labels for the same match behavior.

The practical implication is that the same role or formation can appear more direct and responsive under Competitive, while Authentic may reward a more patient reading of movement and defensive shape. For example, quicker passing and dribbling can make a combination feel easier to execute at speed in Competitive. In Authentic, slower skill-move and dribbling speeds, tighter defensive lines, and different midfield positioning can change the timing and spaces available to that same combination. This is an interpretation of EA’s stated tuning differences, not a measured claim that one preset makes a particular tactic more effective.
Defensive behavior is another reason not to judge the tactic from formation alone. Competitive has reduced AI defending, whereas Authentic has greater AI defending and tighter defensive lines. A shape that relies on teammates automatically closing space may therefore feel different across presets. Authentic also has more realistic midfield positioning, so the distances between lines and the way play develops may not look like the faster, more responsive experience of Competitive. These are game-feel considerations, not guarantees about the outcome of any match.

The goalkeeper distinction is more specific to Authentic: EA notes more physics-based rebounds and blocks. The notes do not offer a corresponding separate Competitive goalkeeper specification, so it would be misleading to infer a precise opposite effect. If you compare the presets, keep goalkeeper moments in mind as one possible difference, but focus your main tactic evaluation on the passing, movement, defending, and positioning changes EA actually describes.
Why a Career Mode version may need its own adjustments
Career Mode’s Tactical Vision system and Head Coach familiarity create an additional layer that Ultimate Team does not share in the same way. EA narrowed Tactical Vision requirements to what it considers essential. Player Roles are no longer requirements for a Tactical Vision, so you have more freedom to choose roles based on the squad and your preference rather than treating every role as a vision prerequisite.
This changes how to think about a role choice in Career. A role is not automatically disallowed just because it is not the role most closely associated with a given vision. Instead, you can shape the setup around the team you want to use, then consider whether a Head Coach’s familiarity offers an additional benefit for particular roles. The vision and the familiarity boost are related considerations, but they are not identical constraints.

A Head Coach who is familiar with the selected Tactical Vision can still increase role familiarity. EA’s example is a Possession tactic that can use either a False 9 or a Poacher. Both are valid role choices for that vision, but the coach familiarity boost applies to the False 9. In practice, this means a role can be allowed by your tactical setup while still receiving a different familiarity benefit depending on the coach.

When you bring a code into Career, consider the tactic in two parts: the formation and player-role arrangement you imported, and the Career-specific fit between your Tactical Vision, coach, and role familiarity. The code’s availability does not remove those Career considerations. If a role does not receive the same familiarity benefit as another, that alone does not mean the code failed or that the role cannot be used; it means the Career coach mechanic is an additional factor to take into account.
It is also worth separating tactical preference from tactical familiarity. You may prefer a particular role because it suits the players or the way you want the team to attack, while a familiar coach may boost a different role. The official example establishes that those choices can differ. It does not establish that one role is universally better, or that the coach boost will make a tactic more successful in every match.
How to test one custom tactic fairly in both modes
- Save the setup as a tactic code. Use the game’s tactic-code feature to preserve the configuration you want to compare. The official notes confirm that codes can be saved to a profile and used across Ultimate Team and Career, but do not specify a universal menu path. Record which code and setup you are testing so that you can distinguish the imported configuration from later changes.
- Load the same code into the other mode. FC 25 codes can also be applied in FC 26, where they convert. After loading, check the resulting setup rather than assuming the match behavior will be identical. Reusability is about carrying over the tactic; it is not evidence that the two modes use the same gameplay preset or Career mechanics.
- Record the gameplay preset in each mode. Ultimate Team is Competitive. Career defaults to Authentic, but Career permits switching between Competitive and Authentic. If you want to isolate how the preset changes the feel, keep the tactic fixed and compare Career under each preset where available. When comparing Ultimate Team with Career, remember that Career’s default is not the same as Ultimate Team’s mandatory preset.
- In Career, check Tactical Vision and coach familiarity. Roles are not mandatory Tactical Vision requirements, but a familiar Head Coach may boost familiarity for particular roles. Note which roles receive that benefit when evaluating the imported setup. Do not confuse an available role with one that receives a coach familiarity boost.
- Compare like with like during matches. Observe passing tempo, dribbling and skill-move speed, AI defensive support, defensive-line behavior, and midfield positioning. These are the areas EA identifies as differing between Competitive and Authentic. Goalkeeper rebounds and blocks are also described as more physics-based in Authentic. Use these observations to explain a difference in feel rather than treating the tactic code as the only variable.
- Keep the question narrow. If you are checking whether the code transferred, inspect the resulting formation and role arrangement. If you are checking whether the preset changes match feel, avoid changing the tactic at the same time. If you are checking Career role familiarity, account for the vision and Head Coach rather than drawing a conclusion from gameplay preset alone. Keeping those questions separate makes the comparison easier to interpret.
- Make adjustments for the mode you intend to play. If the Career version feels different, first determine whether that is expected from Authentic’s tuning or related to Career’s tactical and coach systems. Adjust the setup to suit that mode rather than assuming the code failed. A shared code is a practical baseline; mode-specific tuning and Career context remain part of the final setup.
Which preset should you use in Career?
There is no single research-backed answer that says Competitive or Authentic is better for every Career player or tactic. Career defaults to Authentic, whose goal is a more realistic tempo and positioning. It can also be switched to Competitive. If your main question is how a tactic behaves in Ultimate Team, Competitive is the closer preset comparison because Ultimate Team requires it. If your aim is the Career default experience, test it under Authentic first, then decide whether Competitive better suits the way you want matches to feel.

EA SPORTS FC gameplay notes, introduced by gameplay team designers and producers Keegan Sabatino, Gigo Navarro, and Thomas Caleffi, were published July 22, 2025. They establish that tactic codes are reusable across modes, describe the Competitive/Authentic distinction, and explain the gameplay features associated with each preset.
