How to Check Whether Your PC Can Run a New Co-Op Game

Check a new co-op game against your PC’s exact OS and hardware. Learn how to compare minimum and recommended specs, verify DirectX support, and judge performance expectations.

Check the current system requirements for the exact game, then compare them with your PC’s operating system, processor, graphics hardware, RAM, and free storage. Check minimum and recommended requirements separately: meeting the minimum is a compatibility starting point, not a promise of smooth performance.

1. Find the game’s current requirements

Open the game’s official store listing and locate its System Requirements section. Requirements apply to a particular game and can change as it is updated, so do not rely on a generic gaming-PC checklist or an old compatibility result. Steam notes that updates can add features or improve graphics and sound in ways that make a game run less well on older hardware: Steam Support: System Requirements.

Read the minimum and recommended tiers as separate targets. Minimum requirements indicate the listed baseline; recommended requirements are a different, higher target. Neither tier alone specifies the performance you will get in every situation.

2. Compare your PC with each requirement

Compare like with like, using the component model names rather than broad labels such as “gaming laptop” or “integrated graphics.” Steam explains how to find a computer’s specifications in its system information guidance. Check these categories individually:

#1 Best Overall
CyberPowerPC Gaming PC, AMD Ryzen 5 5500, Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB | Gamer Master, 8GB DDR4, 500GB PCIe 4.0 SSD, WiFi Ready & Windows 11 Home (GMA3100A3)
  • System: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6GHz 6 Cores | AMD B550 Chipset | 8GB DDR4 | 500GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 1x DisplayPort
  • Connectivity: 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 5 | Bluetooth 5.0 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support
  • Operating system: Confirm that your Windows or other operating system edition and version are supported. Check explicitly for a 64-bit requirement; OS support is separate from the hardware requirements.
  • Processor (CPU): Compare your exact CPU model with the one named in the game’s requirements. A similar-sounding product family or a laptop label is not enough to establish equivalence.
  • Graphics (GPU): Compare the exact graphics processor model. If the listing also names a DirectX version or shader feature, verify that the GPU itself supports it.
  • Memory (RAM): Compare installed RAM with the listed amount, while remembering that other programs and the operating system use some of it.
  • Storage: Check that the required drive space is available on the drive where you plan to install the game. Installed capacity and free space are not the same.

3. Check DirectX and graphics support correctly

A DirectX version shown as installed in Windows does not, by itself, prove that your graphics hardware supports the features a game requires. Check the GPU’s hardware capabilities as well as the installed software. Microsoft explains the distinction in its DirectX version guidance.

4. Set realistic expectations for performance

A PC that meets the listed minimum can still deliver low frame rates or inconsistent performance. Steam Support puts it plainly: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” Available RAM, graphics drivers, resolution, graphics settings, and background processes can all affect results. Higher resolution or more demanding settings can reduce frame rates.

5. What to do if one specification is unclear

Find the exact model number for the component in question, then compare it with the examples in the game’s listing. If the game names a specific GPU or CPU, a broad description such as “gaming PC” does not show whether yours is comparable. When the listing or your system information does not make the comparison clear, do not treat an uncertain match as a confirmed yes.

What a yes-or-no answer needs

A specific compatibility verdict requires both the exact game and your PC’s actual specifications. Without those details, the dependable answer is the comparison method above—not a blanket claim that a certain kind of computer can run every new co-op game.
