How to Check Whether Your MacBook Is Vintage or Obsolete With Apple

Find your MacBook’s exact model, understand Apple’s five-, seven- and ten-year service rules, check current vintage examples, and verify the newest compatible macOS.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To determine whether Apple considers your MacBook vintage or obsolete, first identify the exact model and its serial number, then compare that model with Apple’s current service list. Apple’s labels are based on when it stopped distributing a model—not when you bought it. A Mac can also be too old for the latest macOS while still falling outside Apple’s vintage or obsolete categories, so check both the service classification and the newest compatible operating system.

What you need to check

You need three pieces of information before making a reliable judgment:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Exact model name and screen size, such as MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) or MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019).
  • Model identifier and, when available, part number, which distinguish revisions that look similar.
  • Serial number, useful for confirming the model and coverage record.

The year shown in a product name is not enough by itself. A 13-inch MacBook Pro from one release period can have different ports, processors, support dates and macOS limits from another 13-inch model. Record the complete description before checking Apple’s records.

Find your MacBook’s exact identity

Use About This Mac first

  1. Start the Mac and sign in.
  2. Choose Apple menu  > About This Mac.
  3. Write down the model name and year or release period shown in the window.
  4. Record the serial number displayed there.

Apple describes this as the easiest way to find the name of a Mac model. Do not rely on a nickname such as “old MacBook Pro”; keep the wording, screen size and release period exactly as shown.

Confirm it in System Information

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Information.
  2. Select Hardware in the sidebar.
  3. Record the Model Name, Model Identifier, Serial Number (system) and Part Number.

The model identifier is especially useful when two machines share a similar retail name. The part number can provide an additional check for regional or configuration differences. Keep a copy of these values before looking up service status.

Use Apple’s serial-number lookup

Enter the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com. Apple’s coverage tool can return the specific model name associated with that serial. Treat the result as confirmation, not as a replacement for recording the model identifier in System Information.

If the Mac will not start normally

Apple documents several fallback locations for the serial number:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • the underside of the MacBook’s chassis, where the serial may be printed;
  • the original packaging or purchase documentation;
  • your device list at account.apple.com;
  • an Apple-documented Terminal command run from macOS Recovery.

The printed serial and packaging are useful leads, but verify the result against Apple’s account record or the machine’s System Information whenever possible. If the logic board has been replaced, the serial printed on the chassis or box may no longer be the active serial associated with the current board. In that situation, use About This Mac, System Information or account.apple.com to identify the current hardware.

Match the model with Apple’s MacBook records

After collecting the identifier, open Apple’s Identify your MacBook model table and match the model identifier or part number. The table gives the introduction period and newest compatible operating system. The examples below illustrate how the entries are structured.

MacBook entry Model identifier Newest compatible operating system listed by Apple
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017) MacBook10,1 Not stated in the cited example
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) MacBook9,1 macOS Monterey
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) MacBook8,1 macOS Big Sur

MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) MacBook5,2 OS X El Capitan 10.11.6

Use the exact identifier rather than choosing the closest-looking entry. If Apple lists several configurations for the same year and screen size, use the part number and port or processor details in the table to separate them.

Apple’s definitions: vintage versus obsolete

Apple classification How Apple defines it Practical meaning
Neither category yet Apple stopped distributing the model five years ago or less, subject to Apple’s current records and applicable law. It is within Apple’s normal service period, although parts and local service availability can still vary.
Vintage Apple stopped distributing the model for sale more than five and less than seven years ago. Service may still be available through Apple or Apple-authorized service providers, but parts availability is no longer equivalent to a current model.
Obsolete Apple stopped distributing the model for sale more than seven years ago. Apple discontinues hardware service and service providers cannot order parts for the product.

These definitions use the date Apple last distributed the product model, not the date an individual owner purchased it. A Mac bought new from remaining inventory several years after Apple discontinued it can therefore be classified as vintage or obsolete sooner than its owner expects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wording also matters at the boundaries. “More than five and less than seven years” is Apple’s definition of vintage, while “more than seven years” is the definition of obsolete. Do not assign a category from an approximate age calculation alone; check Apple’s live list for the exact model because Apple’s records and distribution dates control the classification.

What service remains for a vintage MacBook?

Apple says owners can generally obtain service and parts from Apple service providers for at least five years from the date Apple last distributed a model for sale. Service can continue longer when required by law or while parts remain available. Once Apple lists a Mac as vintage, a provider may still be able to repair it, but the available parts, repair types and geographic options can be narrower than for a current Mac.

  • Ask the Apple Store or authorized provider to check the exact model identifier, not just “MacBook Pro” or “MacBook Air.”
  • Confirm that the proposed repair has a part available before handing over the computer.
  • Expect availability to vary by country, provider and component. A display, keyboard, logic board or port assembly may have a different status from a battery.
  • Back up the Mac before service; an older machine may need a replacement component or a full-system repair that affects data access.

Apple’s classification is a service-policy label, not a statement that the computer is unsafe or unusable. A vintage Mac can continue to run its supported operating system and applications, but repair economics and security-update limits deserve separate consideration.

What “obsolete” changes

For an obsolete product, Apple says it discontinues all hardware service and Apple service providers cannot order parts. That means a provider may refuse a logic-board, display, keyboard, charging or other hardware repair even if the machine still powers on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mac laptops have one important exception: Apple says they may be eligible for a battery-only repair period of up to 10 years from the date Apple last distributed the model. This is not an automatic guarantee. It depends on parts availability and applies to the battery service, not to a general reopening of hardware support. Ask the provider to verify both the model’s distribution date and the battery part before assuming a repair is possible.

Independent repair businesses may have different inventories and capabilities, but their ability to source compatible parts, preserve features such as Touch ID, and provide a warranty must be confirmed directly. Apple’s obsolete label still means Apple-authorized providers cannot order parts through Apple’s service channel.

Use the newest compatible macOS as a second age signal

The newest operating system Apple lists for a model is a practical software-support signal. It tells you how far that hardware can go on Apple’s official macOS compatibility list, but it does not determine whether Apple calls the product vintage or obsolete. A model can be vintage while still running a relatively recent macOS, or be outside current software support without having crossed Apple’s seven-year service threshold.

Model Newest compatible macOS in Apple’s table What the result tells you
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) macOS Monterey Official macOS support ends at Monterey for this model.
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) macOS Big Sur Official macOS support ends at Big Sur for this model.
MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010) macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 The final listed system is an older High Sierra release.
MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 The final listed system is OS X El Capitan 10.11.6.

Apple’s table does not establish a newest-compatible version for every model in the examples above; for instance, the cited entry for the 2017 12-inch MacBook supplies the identifier MacBook10,1 but not a version in that example. Look up that model’s live entry rather than inferring the version from the year.

Those application requirements are separate from Apple’s vintage and obsolete labels.

Mac laptops currently shown as vintage examples

Apple’s worldwide vintage list currently includes these Mac laptop entries:

  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019)
  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, 2 TBT3)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, 4 TBT3)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019)
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017)

This list is a snapshot, not a permanent catalog. Apple changes its records as each model passes the relevant distribution threshold, and the list can differ by product type or region. Recheck Apple’s live vintage and obsolete page immediately before arranging service, especially for a model near the five- or seven-year boundary.

A reliable decision workflow

  1. Identify the machine. Record the complete model name, release period, serial number, model identifier and part number from About This Mac and System Information.
  2. Resolve conflicts. If the serial on the case or packaging differs from the active system serial, investigate a logic-board replacement and use the current System Information or account record.
  3. Match Apple’s model table. Confirm the identifier, introduction period and newest compatible operating system.
  4. Check Apple’s current service list. Search for the exact model, not a broad family name. Note whether Apple lists it as vintage, obsolete or neither.
  5. Ask about the specific repair. A classification does not tell you whether a particular battery, display or keyboard is in stock. Give the provider the identifier and ask about the component you need.
  6. Check software suitability. Compare the newest compatible macOS with the security, browser and application versions your work requires.
  7. Choose a next step. If the Mac is vintage and the repair is available, a repair may be reasonable. If it is obsolete, compare the cost and risk of a battery-only repair, independent repair or replacement, while preserving your data first.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using the purchase date as the age

A receipt proves when you bought the computer, not when Apple stopped distributing that model. Apple’s classification follows the latter date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checking only the year

Different screen sizes, port layouts and configurations can share a calendar year. Use the model identifier and part number to avoid applying the wrong service status.

Assuming an unsupported macOS means “obsolete”

Software compatibility and hardware-service classification are separate records. Check both Apple’s operating-system table and its vintage/obsolete list.

Assuming “vintage” guarantees a repair

Vintage status means the model is in the five-to-seven-year service window under Apple’s definition; it does not promise that every component is stocked in your area. Confirm the exact part and provider before paying for diagnostics or transport.

Reading “battery-only up to 10 years” as full support

The extended period applies to battery repair for eligible Mac laptops, is limited by parts availability and does not restore Apple hardware service for an obsolete Mac.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When replacement is the more practical choice

Classification alone should not dictate a purchase. A vintage Mac with a healthy battery, adequate storage and a repairable fault can remain useful. Replacement becomes more compelling when several constraints arrive together:

  • the model is obsolete and the required non-battery part cannot be ordered;
  • the newest compatible macOS is too old for essential software or security requirements;
  • the repair approaches the value of a supported used Mac;
  • the battery, storage and display all need attention at the same time;
  • you cannot obtain a dependable backup or restore path for the current system.

Make a current backup before testing repair or migration. Keep the old Mac until you have confirmed that your files, accounts, applications and external devices work on the replacement.

Bottom line

Start with Apple menu  > About This Mac, confirm the details under System Information > Hardware, and use the serial number only as part of that verification. Then compare the exact model with Apple’s live service list: vintage means Apple stopped distributing it more than five and less than seven years ago; obsolete means more than seven years ago. Finally, check the model’s newest compatible macOS and ask about the specific repair part. That three-part check—identity, service classification and software limit—gives a more dependable answer than the MacBook’s purchase date or exterior appearance.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
