How to Check Whether Your Laptop’s RAM or Storage Can Be Upgraded

Use the exact laptop model and manufacturer documentation to check RAM and storage upgradeability separately before buying parts.

To find out whether a laptop’s RAM or storage can be upgraded, look up the exact model—not just its product-family name—in the manufacturer’s specifications, parts lookup, and service or maintenance manual. Check memory and storage separately: a laptop may have replaceable storage but soldered RAM, or the reverse.

1. Find the laptop’s exact model identifier

Start with the complete model name and any generation, machine-type, product-number, or configuration suffix. Laptops sold under one family name can have different internal parts, so a family-level search may return the wrong memory or drive information. Use the identifier printed on the laptop, shown in system information, or recognized on the manufacturer’s support page.

2. Check the manufacturer’s specifications

Open the specifications for that exact model and search for terms such as “memory,” “maximum supported RAM,” “onboard,” “soldered,” “storage,” “SSD,” and “drive.” Lenovo’s guidance recommends checking product specifications, the user guide, hardware maintenance manual, and parts lookup to establish memory support: Lenovo’s maximum-memory guidance.

  • For RAM, look for whether memory is onboard or soldered, whether there are memory sockets, the supported memory type, and the maximum capacity.
  • For storage, look for the drive type, supported form factor and interface, capacity support, and whether the model has another drive bay or slot.

3. Determine whether the RAM is replaceable

Soldered or onboard memory

RAM described as “onboard” or “soldered” is attached to the motherboard rather than installed as a removable module. It cannot be upgraded by swapping a memory stick. Some laptops combine soldered memory with one or more sockets, so soldered RAM does not automatically mean that no memory upgrade is possible; check whether the exact model also has an available socket and what capacity it supports.

Crucial 32GB DDR5 RAM Kit (2x16GB), 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory 262-Pin SODIMM, Compatible with Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000, Black - CT2K16G56C46S5
  • Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
  • Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
  • Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8

Socketed memory

A documented memory-module removal or replacement procedure is useful evidence that the module can be changed. Record the number of sockets, which are occupied, the memory generation and form factor, and the maximum supported capacity before buying a module. A slot count reported by the operating system is only a clue: it does not reliably establish the physical configuration, supported memory type, or capacity limit.

HP’s support example for the HP ENVY x360 13-ay0045au illustrates checking model specifications and a service manual to distinguish onboard memory from replaceable modules; it is specific to that model and should not be generalized to other HP laptops: HP Support Community example.

  • Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.

4. Check storage compatibility separately

Look up whether the exact laptop has a removable drive and verify the supported format, interface, capacity, and number of storage positions. A connector that looks like an M.2 slot does not, by appearance alone, prove that it supports every M.2 drive type. Confirm the details in the manufacturer’s documentation and parts list, and do not assume a second bay or slot exists unless the exact configuration supports it.

Manufacturer documentation identifies storage drives as possible replaceable parts, but that does not establish the configuration of any particular laptop. Lenovo also classifies parts by serviceability: some are self-service parts, while optional-service parts may require tools and technical skill. See Lenovo’s explanation of self-service and optional-service parts.

5. Confirm the part and the installation procedure

  1. Open the manufacturer’s support page for the complete model identifier.
  2. Review the product specifications, user guide, and hardware maintenance or service manual. Search the manual for memory-module or drive removal and replacement instructions.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s parts lookup, which may search by model, serial number, service tag, or machine type. Check whether a listed part is installed in your unit or is a compatible option.
  4. Compare the candidate part’s specifications against the model’s supported memory or storage details before ordering.
  5. Read and follow the exact disassembly procedure and safety instructions before opening the laptop. If the manual identifies the component as an optional-service part and you are not comfortable with the required work, use a qualified repair provider.

A missing removal procedure is a reason to investigate further, not conclusive proof that a part cannot be replaced. Conversely, a replacement procedure does not by itself confirm that every capacity or third-party part will work. Use the manual together with the specifications and compatible-parts listing.
