Bitcoin and gold are both scarce assets often described as stores of value, but scarcity does not make them equivalent. Gold has a much longer history, demand from several industries and established investment and central-bank roles. Bitcoin is a digital asset whose market value depends on supply and demand and whose price has been markedly more volatile in the historical comparisons cited here. Neither guarantees stable purchasing power or a hedge against inflation over every period.
What does “store of value” mean?
A store of value is an asset people expect to retain purchasing power over time. That expectation is not the same as a promise: an asset can be scarce and still lose value, particularly over shorter periods. Its usefulness as a store of value also depends on demand, liquidity, market history, access and how securely it can be held.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes virtual currency as a digital representation of value that can function as a store of value, while noting that it is not legal tender and is not backed by a government or central bank. In the United States, the CFTC describes bitcoin as a commodity under the Commodity Exchange Act. Those classifications do not make its price stable or guarantee investor protections across every way of buying it. CFTC virtual-currency customer advisory

| Comparison | Bitcoin | Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Form and history | Digital asset traded in markets; it has a much shorter market history than gold. | Physical asset with a long history and established investment and central-bank roles. |
| Sources of demand | Market supply and demand determine its value. | Demand includes jewelry, technology, investment and central banks. |
| Price behavior | Much higher volatility and drawdown risk than gold in the cited World Gold Council comparisons. | Less volatile than bitcoin in those comparisons, but still volatile and capable of losing value. |
| Inflation evidence | The sources reviewed do not establish a dependable inflation-hedge result across all periods. | World Gold Council data show long-run historical outperformance of US CPI since 1971, but that does not guarantee protection over shorter intervals. |
| Ownership concerns | Platform, cyber, custody and market-integrity risks may matter. | Physical ownership can involve premiums, fees, commissions, storage and seller risks. |
Why scarcity is not enough
Gold supply grows slowly, while bitcoin is also commonly discussed in terms of constrained supply. But a limited supply does not mechanically set an asset’s price: demand and the terms on which people can buy, sell and hold it matter too.

Gold’s demand is spread across jewelry, technology, investment and central-bank purchases. The World Gold Council (WGC), a gold-industry association, reports average annual net demand of 3,181 tonnes over the ten years ending in the fourth quarter of 2025. Its measure includes jewelry and technology net of recycling, bars and coins, ETFs and central-bank demand; it excludes over-the-counter demand because of data limitations. This is a WGC market statistic, not proof that gold’s price will rise. World Gold Council, Gold Demand Trends
Bitcoin’s value, by contrast, is derived from market supply and demand. The CFTC cautions that virtual currencies are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies and says their value is “completely derived by market forces of supply and demand.” Scarcity may shape expectations, but it cannot ensure that enough buyers will be available at a particular price.
How do their volatility and drawdowns compare?
In the WGC’s historical comparisons, bitcoin had substantially higher volatility and downside risk than gold. Its 2024 analysis found bitcoin’s performance and volatility closer to technology stocks and reported that it tracked risk assets during selected market drawdowns. These are findings from the WGC’s specified historical windows, not a forecast or a claim that bitcoin and technology stocks will always move together.

The comparison depends on the period, currency, data frequency, benchmark and assets selected. The WGC’s 2024 portfolio analysis uses US-dollar data and dates from 2010 to 2024 for its portfolio tests, along with selected stress periods for drawdowns. Its 2021 report uses different historical windows, so figures from those reports should not be combined as if they were a single synchronized comparison. The WGC also has a gold-industry perspective; its analysis is not personalized investment advice. World Gold Council, Bitcoin vs. Gold
Gold is not risk-free just because its volatility was lower than bitcoin’s in the cited comparisons. The CFTC warns that precious metals can be highly volatile and that past performance is not a good predictor of future returns. Price declines can occur even in a long-established market. Does gold or bitcoin protect against inflation?
The WGC reports that gold’s US-dollar price rose at an annualized rate of 9% from the collapse of the US gold standard in 1971 through December 31, 2025. It also reports that gold outpaced US and world consumer price indexes over that period. These are historical results for a defined benchmark and timeframe; they are neither a forecast nor evidence that gold will keep pace with inflation over every shorter interval.

In the same WGC analysis, gold’s average annual price increase was 10% in years when US inflation was between 2% and 5%, using annual changes from January 1971 through December 31, 2025. That is a historical average for the stated range, not a return an investor should expect in a future inflationary year. The WGC’s gold data run through 2025 and do not provide a synchronized bitcoin-versus-gold performance comparison through that date. World Gold Council, Gold Return

The sources cited here do not establish that bitcoin reliably preserves purchasing power when inflation rises. Its scarcity narrative is not, by itself, evidence of a dependable inflation hedge. For either asset, results depend on when it is bought and sold, the currency used to measure purchasing power and the holding period.
What risks come with owning each asset?
Bitcoin: platform, custody and cyber risks
Bitcoin owners may face price swings as well as cyber threats, market manipulation and weak safeguards at trading platforms. The CFTC warns that many virtual-currency cash markets may not be regulated or supervised by a government agency and may lack customer protections. Risk also depends on how bitcoin is held: exposure through a platform, a fund or another intermediary is not identical to controlling a digital asset directly. Rules and protections vary by jurisdiction and product.

Physical gold: costs, storage and seller risks
Buying bullion directly can involve a premium over the market price, commissions, fees, storage costs and the risk of dealing with an unreliable seller. Those costs can reduce realized returns, and a buyer can still lose money if gold’s price falls. The CFTC specifically cautions consumers not to treat gold as a safe investment.
These ownership risks are not interchangeable. Someone considering a gold fund, futures contract or other financial product does not hold bullion in the same way as someone buying and storing a coin or bar; each structure has its own costs and risks.

Calling bitcoin “digital gold” suggests that the two assets play the same role. The cited evidence does not establish that equivalence. In their 2024 analysis, WGC authors Joseph Cavatoni and John Reade concluded that bitcoin may bring benefits to a diversified portfolio, but was not an equivalent investment or substitute for gold in their analysis because its added volatility and returns were comparable to high-risk equity assets. That is the authors’ conclusion from their methodology, not a regulator’s position.

The WGC’s hypothetical portfolio tests found that a small bitcoin allocation improved risk-adjusted returns in the historical simulation it selected, while larger allocations increased portfolio risks. This result is specific to its chosen assets, dates and allocations; a different period or portfolio construction can produce a different result. A backtest cannot determine which asset, if either, suits an individual investor.
How to use the comparison
- Separate scarcity from reliability. Limited supply does not ensure stable prices or future demand.
- Compare like with like. A historical return or volatility result is meaningful only with its timeframe, currency, benchmark and measurement method.
- Account for how you would hold it. Platform and custody choices affect bitcoin exposure; premiums, fees, storage and seller diligence affect physical gold.
- Do not treat a historical backtest as an allocation rule. Time horizon, liquidity needs and capacity for loss are personal, and the cited portfolio studies do not settle suitability.
The CFTC’s advisories are US-specific consumer information. Regulation, taxes, custody arrangements and consumer protections may differ elsewhere and by product.
