How to Check Whether Your Internet Provider Is Changing After a Local ISP Acquisition

An ISP acquisition announcement does not prove your account has changed. Verify the effective date, billing instructions, contract and service details through official account channels.

First, check your provider’s official acquisition notice, then verify your own account, bill and payment instructions through the provider’s established website or contact details on an existing bill. A sale announcement does not by itself mean your account, contract, billing or internet service has already changed. Ask the provider what is changing for your specific account and the effective date.

Check what has changed—and what has not

An acquisition can involve several separate milestones: a deal announcement, a legal transfer, a change to billing, or a move to a different network. They do not necessarily happen at the same time. For example, Ofcom’s TalkTalk customer guidance, published 5 October 2026, said customers remained TalkTalk customers during the sale process, with no immediate price, contract or billing-access change. TalkTalk’s own customer notice said contracts transferred to TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited on 5 October 2026, while broadband service was not changing as a result of the transaction.

These examples illustrate why the headline alone is not enough to determine what is happening to your service. Confirm the status and date for your provider and account.

Verify the change through official account channels

  1. Find the provider’s acquisition or transition notice. Start from the ISP’s website or app you already use, rather than a link in an unexpected message. Check which provider, acquiring company and service area are covered, and whether the notice describes a proposed deal, a completed transaction or a customer migration.
  2. Sign in to your account portal. Reach it from the established provider website or app. Review the provider name, legal entity, account number, plan, price, contract dates, support details and payment instructions.
  3. Compare your latest bill with the previous one. Check the bill issuer, payment portal, due date, account number and any explanation of a service transfer. A new logo alone does not establish who is collecting payment or whether your payment authorization has changed.
  4. Contact support using a verified channel. Use the number or email address on an existing bill or the provider’s official website. Ask for written confirmation of any change and its effective date. Keep the response and relevant notices.

Do not change payment details or follow a payment link in an unsolicited email just because it refers to the acquisition. Verify any new instructions through your account portal or a contact channel you obtained independently.

Questions to ask your ISP

Ask support to identify the company currently providing your service, the legal entity named on your account, and the date any transfer takes effect. Confirm where future bills will come from and which payment method and portal you should use.

Then ask about each part of your service separately:

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • Will your contract, price, plan, speed tier or data allowance change? If so, when?
  • Will your broadband remain on the same network, or is a network migration planned?
  • Will you need a new router or modem, an engineer visit or setup steps?
  • Will a bundled landline or TV service change?
  • If you use an ISP-provided email address, will access continue and under what terms?

A change in ownership does not by itself establish that any of these customer-level terms or services have changed. Ofcom’s UK switching guidance says that when a customer is moving to a different network, the new provider should explain whether an engineer visit, new equipment or setup steps are needed. That advice concerns an actual network switch; it does not mean an acquisition alone requires new equipment.

Billing transitions can happen on their own schedule

Follow the latest authenticated instructions for your account rather than assuming billing will change—or stay the same—because of a general announcement. For example, Rightfiber’s transition FAQ tells customers to keep using their existing payment method and billing process until told otherwise. SC Broadband’s TKS transition FAQ, by contrast, describes a planned move to its billing system from a stated billing date and says it would send bill-ready email notices.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps | Reliable Performance, Easy Set Up, 20 devices, 4× Gigabit Port, Dual Band, AX1800
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Those are provider-specific examples, not a universal transition process. If your next bill shows a different issuer, account number or payment destination, confirm directly with your ISP whether existing payment authorization remains valid before making changes.

Check bundled services and local rules

If your account includes a landline, TV or ISP-provided email address, ask about each service’s continuity and terms rather than assuming it follows broadband automatically. Ofcom notes that policies for retaining an email address supplied by an old broadband provider differ; some providers charge for continued access after a switch. See its switching guidance for the UK context.

Rules and protections depend on your location and the type of transaction. Ofcom’s guidance applies to UK broadband switching and should not be treated as a rule for every country. A historical FCC order addressed notices in a particular carrier-transfer context; it does not establish a universal notice rule for all local broadband acquisitions. Check your contract and your national or regional communications regulator for the rules that apply where you live.

Keep a record and follow up on conflicting information

Save the acquisition notice, bills and written support responses, including the dates you received them. If a notice conflicts with your contract or the consumer rules in your jurisdiction, contact the relevant regulator or dispute-resolution process. A clear record can help you explain which account instruction or promised effective date you are asking the provider to clarify.
