What Vulkan support requires
Vulkan support is not established just because an operating system can load Vulkan software. The system needs both a Vulkan loader and a driver implementation for the GPU. The Vulkan Documentation Project explains this distinction in its Vulkan Guide.

On a PC with integrated and discrete graphics, identify the GPU you want to use before interpreting results. A diagnostic may expose more than one physical GPU, and the device that appears first is not necessarily the one your game or application will use.

Check the GPU and Vulkan version
Use vulkaninfo on Windows or Linux
- Open a terminal or command prompt and run
vulkaninfo. - Review the output for the physical GPU you intend to use. Note the device name, reported Vulkan API version, and listed capabilities.
- If the command is unavailable or the intended GPU does not appear, use the Vulkan Installation Analyzer (VIA), included in the Vulkan SDK, to check Vulkan components and validate the loader and driver installation. VIA is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
The Vulkan Guide recommends vulkaninfo for inspecting Vulkan support and device capabilities on Windows and Linux, and describes VIA for component validation. A missing device can point to an absent or incorrectly exposed driver, but it does not identify a single cause by itself.

Interpret the version and capabilities
A reported API version is useful, but it is not a complete compatibility verdict. Vulkan distinguishes instance and device versions, and an application may depend on particular extensions or features. The Vulkan Guide says Vulkan API minor versions 1.0 through 1.4 are backward compatible; that does not mean every device supports every capability an application uses. Check an app’s stated Vulkan requirements against the intended GPU’s device-level version and capabilities. See the Vulkan Guide’s version documentation.
Update the driver from the right source
First confirm the exact GPU model and operating system. Then use the matching official vendor driver page rather than choosing a package based only on a broad label such as “NVIDIA” or “Radeon.” For laptops and OEM-managed systems, follow the computer maker’s instructions when it specifies a driver path for that model; installation steps vary by system and operating system.

NVIDIA GeForce, RTX, and Quadro
NVIDIA’s driver search asks you to select a product and operating system. Its Vulkan driver page lists general-release drivers for Windows and Linux and describes support by GPU family. Use the live pages to confirm the current driver for your specific model. NVIDIA distinguishes recommended/WHQL, beta, Studio, and production categories; beta drivers are preview releases undergoing qualification and may have significant issues. Its Vulkan page also distinguishes developer beta releases from general-release drivers.
AMD Radeon
Use AMD’s official driver instructions for your specific GPU and operating system, then consult GPUOpen’s Radeon Vulkan driver version table if you need to map an Adrenalin release to its reported Vulkan version. The table includes release status and Windows Driver Store version information; consult the live table rather than relying on an older row.

Other vendors and Linux distributions
For Intel graphics, other GPU vendors, and Linux systems with distribution-managed drivers, use the official instructions for the exact GPU and operating system. Driver packaging and installation paths differ, so a universal click-by-click procedure would be misleading.
Verify after installation
- Run the vendor’s driver installer for the confirmed GPU and operating system, following its prompts.
- Restart if the installer requests it.
- Run
vulkaninfoagain, or validate components with VIA. Confirm that the intended physical GPU appears and inspect its device-level version and capabilities. - If the GPU still does not appear or the app still reports a Vulkan error, check that the app is targeting the intended GPU and consult the GPU or system manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions.
The final diagnostic check uses the Vulkan Guide’s recommended inspection tools; it verifies what the system exposes after installation, not whether a particular driver package will resolve every underlying problem.

If Vulkan is still unavailable
- Check whether the diagnostic is reporting the integrated GPU instead of the discrete GPU, or vice versa.
- Confirm that the installed driver matches the exact GPU model and operating system.
- Use VIA to inspect whether the loader and driver components are present and validated.
- Compare the application’s required version, extensions, and features with the capabilities reported for the GPU.
These checks help separate a driver or configuration issue from a device limitation. Do not assume that a missing Vulkan device means the graphics card must be replaced; establish which GPU and driver path the system is using first.
