How to Prepare for Floods and Landslides in Nepal

Prepare a household evacuation plan before heavy rain, know how to check official Nepal warnings, and leave promptly when local authorities direct you to. Floods and landslides need different responses: never enter floodwater, and if a slope failure appears imminent, get out of its path if you can do so safely. Routes, shelters and warning coverage vary by locality, so confirm them with your ward or municipality rather than relying on a generic checklist.

Make a household plan before heavy rain

Ask your ward or municipality which areas are exposed, which shelters and evacuation routes are designated, how alerts reach residents, and what to do if phone service or roads fail. There is no single safe route or evacuation threshold for every settlement in Nepal.

Agree where to go and how to get there

  • Choose a safe destination and at least one route with local authorities or knowledgeable local responders. Consider whether the route passes beside a river, stream, steep slope or bridge that could become hazardous.
  • Write down the route, contacts and meeting point on paper as a backup to your phone. Agree on an out-of-area contact so separated household members can pass on information.
  • Plan an alternate route and ask officials what to do if the primary route is blocked. Follow current local directions if conditions change.

Plan for everyone in the household

  • Decide how children, older people and anyone with a disability or medical need will leave. Assign who will help and who will carry essential medicines and documents.
  • Include pets and livestock in the plan. Ask local authorities what arrangements are possible if animals cannot accompany you to a shelter.
  • Include neighbors who may need help, but do not let assisting others delay your own escape from immediate danger.

Keep supplies ready to carry

Store a portable kit where it is easy to grab. Tailor it to your household and review it regularly. Useful items include water, ready-to-eat food, a flashlight and batteries, a phone and charging option, first aid supplies, essential medicines, hygiene items, contact details, some cash, and protected copies of important documents. Keep identity and essential records in a waterproof container; where feasible, also keep a protected digital copy. A kit supports your plan—it is not a reason to wait when evacuation is advised.

Reduce avoidable hazards around the home

Clear drains and gutters when it is safe and lawful. Do not cut into or alter a steep slope. Slope stabilization and other structural work require qualified local technical advice; generic household guidance cannot establish whether a particular slope is safe.

Check official warnings in Nepal

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) links to weather forecasts, special weather forecasts, three-day bulletins, and its Flood Forecasting and Early Warning Service on its English site. The site lists 1155 for extreme weather and flood information: press 1 for weather forecasts and press 2 for flood early warning. Phone menus and service availability can change, so check DHM’s current information.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) publishes disaster bulletins and official notices on its English site, which lists the National Emergency Operations Center toll-free number as 1234. NDRRMA also urges the public to verify information before sharing it. Use official notices and local authority instructions, not unconfirmed forwarded messages.

Nepal’s national warning system is moving toward a multi-hazard approach, but national capacity does not mean every community receives a direct alert or has the same warning time. The Nepal Disaster Report 2024 describes real-time and three-day rolling hydro-meteorological information and says impact-based landslide forecasting had been piloted in most hilly and mountainous districts. It also describes an early-warning pilot in Bhimeshwor Municipality combining susceptibility mapping, geotechnical work, rain gauges, soil-moisture instruments, an extensometer and the municipal emergency operations center. Those examples show the local mapping, instruments and response arrangements involved; they do not establish universal local alerts or a common evacuation trigger.

The same report says NDRRMA had installed smart sirens at 49 vulnerable locations during the period it covers. That is a historical reporting-period figure, not a verified current count. Ask your ward or municipality what alert signals mean locally and what action to take when one sounds.

What to do when flood danger is possible

  • Follow local warnings and evacuate when authorities direct. Leave early enough to avoid rising water or blocked roads trapping you.
  • Do not walk, swim or drive through floodwater. Do not cross a flooded road or bridge or go around barriers; water that looks shallow can still be dangerous.
  • Move to locally designated higher ground or a shelter only by a route that is safe for the conditions. A riverbank, low crossing or bridge may itself be at risk.
  • If you are inside a building, follow local emergency instructions and move away from floodwater. Contact emergency responders if possible; do not enter flowing water to retrieve belongings or attempt a rescue.
  • If water or access conditions are changing, prioritize people and essential medicines. Do not delay leaving to pack possessions.

How to recognize possible landslide danger

Heavy rain can precede slope failure, but a checklist cannot predict whether or when a particular slope will move. Take unusual changes seriously: cracking or rumbling, new ground cracks or movement, trees or rocks shifting, or a sudden increase or decrease in stream flow or a change from clear to muddy water. These may signal movement or upstream debris; they are warning signs, not a precise forecasting method.

If a landslide seems imminent, get out of its likely path if you can do so safely. Do not wait for an official message when danger is apparent, but keep clear of slopes and channels as you leave. Avoid valleys, stream channels, roads below unstable slopes and the slide area; do not cross mud or water flowing over a road. Warn neighbors only if doing so will not delay your escape. Call local authorities or responders once you are safe, and do not enter the slide area to attempt a rescue.

Flood and landslide responses are not interchangeable

Decision Flood Landslide or debris flow
What to monitor Official flood and weather warnings, heavy rain and changing water conditions. Unusual slope movement or sounds, new cracks, moving rocks or trees, and sudden stream changes.
Where to move To locally designated higher ground or a shelter by a safe route. Out of the likely slide path, keeping away from slopes and channels.
What to avoid Floodwater, flooded bridges and roads, and barriers. Slide zones, channels, mud or water crossing roads, and roads below unstable slopes.
After the immediate event Floodwater and damaged infrastructure; water may be unsafe and roads or bridges may be compromised. Unstable ground and the possibility of further slides.

In either case, local officials should determine evacuation routes and thresholds. Conditions can also block access: the American Red Cross reported that a flash flood struck Rasuwa District on 26 August 2026, damaging infrastructure, washing away bridges and disrupting roads. The report describes that event, not a forecast or a measure of risk for other places.

Return only when authorities say it is safe

  • Stay away from flooded areas and landslide sites until authorities say they are safe. Further slides, contaminated water, damaged structures and downed electrical lines may remain hazards.
  • Follow official advice about drinking water, road access, shelter and return. Do not assume a road or bridge is intact because it looks passable.
  • Check on household members and neighbors from safe locations. Report trapped people to trained responders instead of entering floodwater or unstable ground.
  • Do not touch wet electrical equipment or downed power lines. In a damaged building, use a flashlight rather than an open flame.
