How to Check Whether Your GitLab Instance Is Vulnerable to CVE-2026-85706

Find out whether a self-managed GitLab CE or EE instance falls within the affected ranges for CVE-2026-85706 and which fixed release applies.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the version of every self-managed GitLab CE or EE installation against the branch-specific ranges below. Versions before the listed fixed release are affected by CVE-2026-85706, a critical unauthenticated arbitrary-file-read flaw that government advisories say is reportedly being actively exploited. GitLab says GitLab.com and GitLab Dedicated were already patched; self-managed administrators should verify their own installations and upgrade affected instances promptly.

Which GitLab versions are affected?

GitLab’s advisory covers CE and EE installations in these release branches. Compare the full version, including its patch number—not just the major version.

Branch Affected versions Fixed version
18.7 through 18.11 18.7 up to, but not including, 18.11.12 18.11.12
19.0 Before 19.0.9 19.0.9
19.1 Before 19.1.8 19.1.8
19.2 Before 19.2.6 19.2.6
19.3 Before 19.3.2 19.3.2

GitLab’s September 10, 2026 release announced fixes in 19.3.2, 19.2.6, and 19.1.8; the release record added backports to 19.0.9 and 18.11.12 on September 23. Versions older than 18.7 are not included in this advisory’s stated affected range. That does not establish that those older versions are secure or supported. See GitLab’s September 2026 critical patch release.

How to check your instance

Use the version shown by each self-managed installation and compare it with the table. Check separate production installations and replicas individually; do not assume they all received the same upgrade.

  1. Inventory your installations. List every self-managed GitLab CE or EE instance in scope, including separate production environments and replicas.
  2. Find each installed version. Use your normal administrative method for identifying the running GitLab version, then record the complete version number for each instance.
  3. Compare branch and patch level. If an instance falls within an affected range in the table, treat it as vulnerable to this flaw until it has been patched.
  4. Upgrade affected instances. Upgrade to the fixed release for that branch using GitLab’s normal upgrade procedure and the method supported by your deployment. GitLab recommends upgrading affected self-managed installations immediately.
  5. Check for signs of attempted exploitation. Review GitLab’s published detections, described below, as part of your investigation.

GitLab-managed services are different: GitLab says GitLab.com and GitLab Dedicated were already patched. The version-check and upgrade steps here are for self-managed installations.

Why this flaw needs urgent attention

CVE-2026-85706 affects GitLab’s repository commits API. The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore describes a path-traversal and authentication-enforcement failure that could let an unauthenticated attacker read arbitrary files from a vulnerable server. It reports a CVSS v3.1 score of 10 out of 10, a publicly available proof of concept, and that exploitation is reportedly underway. GitLab also classifies the issue as critical with a CVSS score of 10.0. See the Singapore Cyber Security Agency advisory of September 17, 2026.

Rank #2

  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security says CISA added the CVE to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on September 11, 2026. This is a reason to prioritize patching rather than relying on perimeter controls alone; it is not evidence that every vulnerable installation has been compromised. See the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security alert.

How to investigate possible exploitation

GitLab names three detection rules for self-managed instances:

Rank #3
GL.iNet GL-MT5000 Brume 3 Wired VPN Security Gateway NO Wi-Fi
  • 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
  • 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
  • “GitLab LFI attempt reading gitlab.yml”
  • “GitLab LFI via metadata.path parameter”
  • “GitLab LFI file path attempt”

Use relevant detections as leads when reviewing available logs and evidence. A clean result from these checks does not, by itself, prove that an instance was never exploited or is uncompromised. If you find suspicious evidence, follow your organization’s incident-response process and preserve relevant logs and evidence while investigating. The cited advisories do not provide a complete forensic procedure or enough incident-specific indicators to declare an instance clean or compromised.
