To use Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, check that both your device and router or gateway explicitly support the relevant standard and 6 GHz band. A listing that says only “Wi-Fi 6” does not establish 6 GHz support. Your internet plan affects internet speed, but it cannot add a Wi-Fi capability missing from your equipment.
What Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 support actually means
Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E are not interchangeable when checking for 6 GHz. Intel says its Wi-Fi 6 products use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, while Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 products add 6 GHz capability. Look for “Wi-Fi 6E” or “Wi-Fi 7” in the specifications for the exact model; “Wi-Fi 6,” “802.11ax,” or a high advertised link speed alone is not proof of 6 GHz support. Intel explains the 6 GHz distinction.

Both ends of the connection matter. A compatible phone or computer needs a compatible router or gateway to connect over 6 GHz, and a new router cannot give that capability to an unsupported client. A router can support newer Wi-Fi generations while still serving older devices on other bands. Microsoft recommends checking device and router support.

Check your client device
Find the exact model and adapter
- Identify the full device model. Use the model number, not just a product family name or marketing description. Check the manufacturer’s official specifications or support page for explicit Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 support.
- For a PC, identify its installed wireless adapter. The adapter determines the radio capabilities. Check the computer manufacturer’s documentation as well as the adapter details; laptop makers may restrict which replacement cards work in a particular system.
- Check manufacturer-specific requirements. If you are considering a manually installed Intel wireless card, Intel advises checking with the computer manufacturer. System configuration or regional rules can also affect whether 6 GHz is enabled. Intel’s guidance covers system compatibility for its products.
Verify operating system and drivers
For Intel Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 adapters, Intel’s instructions call for Windows 11, current updates and suitable drivers for 6 GHz use. For Wi-Fi 7 functionality on Intel Wi-Fi 7 products, Intel specifies Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and a Wi-Fi 7 router. These requirements apply to the relevant Intel products; other manufacturers and device types may have different requirements. See Intel’s instructions, reviewed February 6, 2025.

Check your router or ISP gateway
- Find its exact model. Check the label, administration app or web interface.
- Look up the model’s official specifications. Confirm that it explicitly supports Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz. Microsoft recommends consulting the router documentation or manufacturer’s website; its Windows Wi-Fi guidance explains how to check router support.
- If it belongs to your ISP, ask about that specific gateway. Verify whether it supports the standard you need and whether the provider permits its use with your service. Equipment and replacement policies vary by provider.
Owning a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router does not mean every connected device is using that generation or the 6 GHz band. A client must also support the relevant capability, and the connection can use another supported band.
Confirm 6 GHz is available in your region
6 GHz availability depends on national rules and device configuration. Intel warns that regulators may prohibit the band or that a manufacturer may not enable it on a particular platform. Apple likewise says devices use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz where regional approval for 6 GHz is absent. Check the rules and manufacturer support for your country and exact product; a capable radio alone does not guarantee that 6 GHz will be available. See Intel’s regional and setup guidance and Apple’s Wi-Fi 7 availability page.

Keep Wi-Fi capability separate from your internet plan
Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 describe the wireless connection between your devices and access point. Your ISP plan describes the internet service delivered to your home. Changing plans cannot make an older router or adapter support a newer Wi-Fi generation. Conversely, a Wi-Fi 7 connection does not guarantee a particular internet speed: the plan, modem or gateway, distance, interference and other network conditions matter. Intel notes that gigabit Wi-Fi speeds require capable Wi-Fi equipment and may also require gigabit internet service. Intel’s band comparison discusses these factors.

- Recheck the exact client and router models for explicit 6 GHz support.
- Confirm that the operating system, drivers and manufacturer settings meet the requirements for the device.
- Check that 6 GHz is permitted and enabled for your region and equipment.
- Review the router’s band settings. A network name (SSID) by itself does not show which band a device is using.
Microsoft suggests using separate network names for 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz when you need to identify the band. Apple’s guidance for Apple devices instead recommends using one network name across bands for its preferred setup. These are vendor-specific configuration approaches, not a universal rule. See Microsoft’s home-layout guidance and Apple’s advice for using Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 networks.

On Apple devices, check the model-specific compatibility information: Apple distinguishes devices that can join Wi-Fi 7 networks from those that support all Wi-Fi 7 features. If the network is still absent, verify compatibility and band settings before treating the internet plan as the cause.
Consider range and placement
Compatibility does not guarantee whole-home coverage. Microsoft describes 6 GHz as capable of strong performance close to the router, but with shorter range and less ability to pass through walls than 2.4 GHz. Router placement and the distance or obstacles between it and a client can affect the experience. See Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout.

Use this compatibility checklist before upgrading
- Client: Exact device model and, on a PC, exact wireless adapter support Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7.
- Router or gateway: Exact model supports the same relevant generation and 6 GHz.
- Software: The device meets its manufacturer’s operating-system, driver and configuration requirements.
- Region: 6 GHz is permitted and enabled for the product in your country.
- Service: Your ISP plan and gateway can deliver the internet speed you want; neither determines the Wi-Fi generation supported by your local hardware.
- Coverage: Router location and home layout suit the band you intend to use.
If your client supports 6 GHz but your router does not, a compatible router may be relevant. If the client lacks support, changing the router alone will not add it. Before replacing an ISP gateway or a PC card, confirm the provider’s equipment rules or the computer maker’s compatibility requirements.
