How to Check Whether Your Computer Can Use a Faster or Larger SSD

Learn how to confirm whether your computer supports a larger or faster SSD by checking its model specifications, interface, physical fit, capacity limit, and speed ceiling.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find out whether an SSD upgrade will fit and work, identify your computer’s exact model and check its official specifications and service manual. Confirm the drive type and protocol, physical size, available slot or bay, maximum supported capacity, and interface speed. The label “M.2” alone does not tell you whether a drive uses SATA or NVMe.

1. Find your computer’s exact model

Start with the full model number—not just a product family name. Different configurations within the same family can have different storage slots, interfaces, or limits. Search the model on the manufacturer’s support site and open the specifications and service manual. ASUS and MSI both direct users to check storage support for the specific model: ASUS model specifications guidance and MSI storage-upgrade guidance.

If you cannot identify the model, check the label on the computer or its system information page. Record the exact model identifier before comparing drives.

2. Check what is installed—and what can be added

On Windows, open System Information and go to Components → Storage → Disks to see details about installed drives. The Windows “Defragment and Optimize Drives” tool can also show whether a drive is identified as an SSD or hard disk. These checks describe hardware already installed; they do not confirm that a different drive will be compatible or that another slot is available.

A compatibility scanner or selector, such as Crucial’s, can help identify a system and suggest candidate upgrades, but use the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation to verify the final choice: Crucial System Scanner.

3. Match the interface and protocol

Look for the supported drive class in the specifications. Common possibilities include a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, an M.2 SATA SSD, or an M.2 PCIe/NVMe SSD. Some computers support more than one type, while a particular M.2 slot may support only SATA or only PCIe/NVMe.

M.2 describes a drive’s form factor, not its protocol. A drive can physically resemble the right shape and still be incompatible. Dell explains that M.2 drives may use SATA or PCIe/NVMe and that not every M.2 drive works in every system: Dell’s M.2 and PCIe SSD guidance. Check the manual for the slot’s supported interface and keying before buying.

4. Confirm physical fit and an available slot or bay

For an M.2 SSD, verify the supported length as well as the interface. For example, “2280” indicates a particular M.2 size; it does not establish NVMe compatibility. Check whether the computer has the required mounting point and whether the slot is already occupied.

For a 2.5-inch SSD, confirm that the computer has a compatible bay and the required connections. Also determine whether you can add a second drive or must replace the existing one. MSI’s model-specific guidance covers supported storage ports, slots, and M.2 dimensions: MSI storage-upgrade guidance.

5. Check capacity and speed limits

Maximum capacity

Use the exact model’s specifications or support guidance to check its stated maximum storage capacity. Do not infer a limit from the connector or from another computer in the same product family. For instance, ASUS gives an example of a model supporting up to a 512 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD; that figure applies to the example configuration, not to ASUS computers generally: ASUS model specifications guidance.

PCIe generation and lanes

A faster SSD may work in a system with an older PCIe generation, but it will be constrained by the host interface and available lanes rather than reaching the drive’s advertised maximum. Crucial’s T705 installation guide states: “Though NVMe SSDs are backward compatible (meaning a Gen5 SSD will work in a Gen4 system, etc.) they are not forward compatible, and you will not be able to achieve Gen5 performance in a Gen4 system.” See the Crucial M.2 NVMe PCIe installation guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the computer’s documented interface generation and lane support with the drive’s specifications. A newer, faster-rated drive does not upgrade the computer’s own interface.

6. Compare candidate drives before purchasing

For each SSD you are considering, verify these points against the computer’s documentation:

  • Drive form factor and physical dimensions, including M.2 length or 2.5-inch bay requirements.
  • Supported protocol and interface: SATA or PCIe/NVMe, as applicable.
  • Capacity does not exceed the model’s documented limit.
  • Advertised speed is compatible with the computer’s PCIe generation and lane limits.
  • An appropriate slot or bay is available, or you are prepared to replace the current drive.

If the manual specifies SATA, do not substitute an NVMe drive solely because both are sold as SSDs. Likewise, buy an M.2 NVMe drive only after confirming that the exact slot supports PCIe/NVMe and the drive’s length.

7. Prepare for installation

  1. Back up important files before opening the computer or replacing a drive.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s service or user manual for access and installation instructions.
  3. Seat the drive as directed; do not force it if the connector or mounting point does not line up.
  4. If an M.2 drive is not detected, check that it is the supported type, correctly seated, and secured as instructed. Consult the manual or manufacturer support guidance: Crucial troubleshooting for an M.2 SSD that is not detected.
