Before moving your number to a new iPhone, verify two separate compatibilities: the new iPhone must support eSIM in the region where it was sold, and your carrier must support the activation or transfer method you intend to use. A carrier that offers eSIM may not offer eSIM Quick Transfer, and an iPhone that supports eSIM may still be ineligible under a particular plan.
The safest sequence is to identify the exact iPhone model and sales region, check Apple’s country-specific carrier directory for the relevant method, then confirm eligibility for your line with the carrier if anything is unclear. As of October 2026, Apple’s current instructions specify iOS 18.4 or later on both phones for Quick Transfer.

What you need to verify
There are three separate questions, and answering only one or two can still leave you unable to activate service:
- Does the incoming iPhone have eSIM hardware? Apple’s general requirement is iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later, but regional model differences mean that rule is not a guarantee for every device.
- Does your carrier support eSIM in your country or region? Apple’s carrier directory is divided by region and identifies supported activation methods.
- Does your specific line and plan support the method you want? Prepaid, business, corporate, multi-line and unusual account arrangements may have different eligibility rules even when the carrier appears in Apple’s directory.
“eSIM support” is therefore not a single yes-or-no feature. Carrier Activation, eSIM Quick Transfer, QR-code installation, an app or carrier link, and manual entry are separate routes. Support for one should never be treated as proof that the others work.

1. Identify the exact incoming iPhone
Check the model, not just the product name
Start with the complete model information for the phone you will use. “iPhone 15” or “iPhone 16” is not always enough: Apple can sell different regional variants, and cellular capabilities can differ between them. Record the model generation, storage configuration if relevant to the seller’s listing, and the country or region where the phone was purchased or originally intended for sale.
If you already have the phone, open Settings > General > About and note the model name and model number. If you are buying it, use the seller’s exact model identifier and sales region rather than relying on a generic statement such as “iPhone XS or later.”
Confirm regional eSIM capability
Compare that model and region with Apple’s current regional device information. Some markets have models with different SIM arrangements, so an apparently compatible generation may not provide the same eSIM functions everywhere. Treat the XS/XR-and-newer guideline as a starting point, not a final approval.
Do not assume that a phone advertised as “unlocked” has eSIM capability. Unlock status concerns which networks can be used; it does not add missing eSIM hardware or change a regional model.
Check lock status before the move
Quick Transfer requires the previous iPhone to be unlocked. On the old phone, check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. The entry should indicate that there are no SIM restrictions. If the old iPhone is locked, ask the current carrier about its unlocking process before attempting a transfer.

2. Check Apple’s carrier directory by region and method
Select the country or region first
Open Apple’s carrier-support directory and choose the country or region in which the line will be used. Do not apply a carrier list from another country: participation, account rules and available activation paths are market-specific.
Look under the exact support heading
Find your carrier under the heading that matches your intended route. The directory distinguishes at least these categories:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- eSIM Carrier Activation: the carrier assigns an eSIM digitally, often during purchase or after you contact it.
- eSIM Quick Transfer: the number can move from one iPhone to another through the phones’ setup process.
- Other eSIM methods: the carrier may provide a QR code, an app or link, or manual activation details.
A carrier listed for Carrier Activation is not automatically listed for Quick Transfer. Likewise, a carrier that supplies QR codes may not support phone-to-phone transfer. The directory demonstrates that a method is offered in that market; it does not guarantee eligibility for every plan or account.
What an absent listing means
If the carrier does not appear under Quick Transfer, plan on another method unless the carrier confirms otherwise. If it is absent from the directory altogether, contact the carrier before cancelling service or erasing the old phone. Apple’s list can change, and carrier systems may impose requirements that are not visible in the directory.
3. Confirm your exact line and plan with the carrier
Contact the carrier when any of the following applies:

- Your account is prepaid, business, corporate or managed by someone else.
- The line is part of a family, pooled-data or multi-line arrangement.
- You are changing the account owner, country, billing address or device at the same time.
- The carrier appears in Apple’s directory but not under the method you want.
- You are moving service from a non-Apple phone.
- You cannot receive account verification messages on the old device.
Ask focused questions rather than simply asking whether the carrier “supports eSIM.” Confirm whether your exact line and plan can be moved to the specified iPhone, which activation route is available, and what identity or account verification is required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUseful questions include:
- Can this line transfer to my new iPhone through eSIM Quick Transfer?
- If not, will you provide a QR code, an activation link, an app workflow or manual eSIM details?
- Does the line need to be converted to a different plan or account type?
- Will you require an account PIN, one-time code, photo ID or approval from an administrator?
- What happens to the old physical SIM or eSIM, and when should I stop using it?
Keep the carrier’s instructions and any QR code available until the new line has connected and you have tested it.
4. Choose the transfer method that fits your situation
| Method | How it works | Best fit | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|---|
| eSIM Quick Transfer | Moves a number from a previous iPhone to a new iPhone during setup or from cellular settings. | Two nearby iPhones with a carrier that explicitly supports Quick Transfer. | Carrier directory listing, same Apple Account, unlocked old iPhone, Bluetooth, nearby devices and iOS 18.4 or later on both phones. |
| Carrier Activation | The carrier digitally assigns an eSIM to the new phone, sometimes at purchase or after an account request. | New activations or upgrades where the carrier controls the assignment. | Availability for your line, the carrier’s activation instructions and any required verification. |
| QR code | You scan a carrier-issued code to download the cellular plan. | Carriers that do not offer Quick Transfer but issue installation codes. | Obtain the code directly from the carrier and ask whether a confirmation code or Wi-Fi connection is required. |
| Carrier app or link | An official app or web link downloads and activates the eSIM; some apps also provide transfers. | Carriers that use account authentication in software instead of a QR code. | Use the carrier’s official app or link and verify that it supports your particular line. |
| Manual entry | You enter carrier-provided eSIM server and confirmation details in iPhone settings. | Cases where the carrier supplies activation information directly. | Use only the details supplied by the carrier; do not substitute values found online. |
5. Prepare both iPhones for Quick Transfer
Apple’s current setup instructions list these prerequisites for eSIM Quick Transfer:
- Both phones are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- The previous iPhone is unlocked.
- The phones are close to each other.
- Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
- Both phones run iOS 18.4 or later.
- The carrier supports Quick Transfer for the line.
Before starting, connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or a personal hotspot and install available iOS updates on both devices as appropriate. Keep the old iPhone powered on, unlocked and within reach. If it is lost, broken, reset or out of battery, the nearby-device transfer may not be available even when the carrier supports it.
6. Perform a Quick Transfer during or after setup
During initial setup
- Turn on the new iPhone and proceed through setup until cellular service is offered.
- Choose the option to transfer a cellular plan from a nearby iPhone when it appears.
- Keep the old iPhone unlocked and follow its on-screen approval prompts.
- Complete any carrier verification requested on either phone.
- Wait for the new iPhone to show an active cellular connection before closing setup.
After setup
- Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions).
- Choose the option to add or set up an eSIM, then select transfer from a nearby iPhone if that option is offered.
- Approve the transfer on the old iPhone and complete the carrier’s verification steps.
- Wait for activation, then place a call and test cellular data.
Menu wording can vary by iOS version and region. If a carrier setup banner appears, follow that prompt instead of starting a second activation path.

Understand what happens to the old SIM
Activation on the new iPhone deactivates the previous SIM. Apple states: “When the cellular plan on your new iPhone activates, it deactivates your previous SIM.” Keep the old phone available until the new line is active and verified, but do not expect the old SIM to remain usable after a successful transfer.

7. Use an alternative when Quick Transfer is unavailable
Carrier Activation
Some carriers assign the eSIM automatically when the phone is purchased or when an account request is approved. Follow the carrier’s activation instructions and wait for the plan to appear in cellular settings. If the new phone shows no service, ask the carrier to confirm that the eSIM assignment was completed for the correct device.
QR-code installation
Request a current QR code from the carrier. On the new iPhone, use the eSIM add flow in Settings > Cellular and scan the code when prompted. Some carriers also issue a confirmation code. Keep the message containing the code until activation succeeds; a one-time code may expire or become invalid after use.
Carrier app or link
Install or open the carrier’s official app, or use the link supplied by the carrier. Sign in to the account that owns the line and follow the eSIM installation prompts. Do not rely on an unofficial app or a link forwarded from an unknown source.
Manual eSIM information
If the carrier provides server and confirmation details, enter them exactly as supplied in the iPhone’s eSIM setup screen. Manual activation is sensitive to every character, so copy the information carefully and ask the carrier to reissue it rather than guessing when an entry fails.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Verify service before you leave the old phone behind
- Confirm that the new iPhone displays the expected carrier and phone number under cellular settings.
- Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily and verify that cellular data works.
- Place an outgoing call and send a text message.
- Ask someone to call or text you to confirm incoming service.
- Test service in a location where you normally use the phone if coverage is a concern.
Do not erase, trade in or ship the old iPhone until these checks pass. Activation can complete while a phone still has a Wi-Fi connection, masking a cellular-data problem.

9. Troubleshoot common failures
Quick Transfer option does not appear
Recheck that both phones use iOS 18.4 or later, are signed in to the same Apple Account, have Bluetooth enabled, are nearby, and that the old iPhone is unlocked. If all prerequisites are satisfied, verify that the carrier is listed specifically for eSIM Quick Transfer in the correct region. A Carrier Activation or QR-code listing does not establish Quick Transfer support.
The carrier is listed, but your line will not transfer
Ask the carrier to check plan-level eligibility. Prepaid, business and managed accounts may require a different workflow or administrator approval. Request a QR code, app link or carrier activation if Quick Transfer is not available for the line.
The QR code or app fails
Connect to reliable Wi-Fi, restart the installation flow and confirm that the code belongs to the intended line. If the code was already scanned or has expired, request a replacement. Do not repeatedly delete and reinstall an eSIM without carrier guidance; doing so can remove the only active profile.
The new phone shows no service after activation
Wait several minutes, restart the iPhone and check for a carrier setup notification. If calls and cellular data still fail, contact the carrier and provide the new device details and the time activation was attempted. Do not cancel the old service until the carrier confirms the new line is active.
You started a transfer too early
Because successful activation deactivates the previous SIM, stop before erasing the old phone and contact the carrier if the new phone has not connected. The carrier can determine whether the eSIM assignment completed and whether a replacement activation is required.
Decision checklist before switching
- Exact incoming iPhone model and sales region recorded.
- Regional eSIM capability confirmed for that model.
- Correct country or region selected in Apple’s carrier directory.
- Carrier found under the specific method you intend to use.
- Plan and account eligibility confirmed with the carrier when necessary.
- New iPhone connected to Wi-Fi or a hotspot.
- For Quick Transfer: same Apple Account, unlocked old iPhone, Bluetooth enabled, phones nearby and iOS 18.4 or later on both.
- Carrier QR code, app link or manual details obtained when using an alternative method.
- Old iPhone retained until calls, texts and cellular data work on the new one.
What can change over time
Apple’s carrier directory, supported regions, iOS requirements and carrier plan rules are updated. The current Quick Transfer requirement is iOS 18.4 or later on both iPhones, so older setup guides may be out of date. Recheck Apple’s setup instructions and regional carrier directory immediately before a planned switch, then confirm any account-specific rule with the carrier.
