Check the VM’s Hardware Virtualization field in VirtualBox, or run VBoxManage showvminfo "VM name" --details and look for Hardware Virtualization: on. This shows the VM’s hardware-virtualization setting; by itself, it does not prove that the host is currently providing AMD-V to a running hypervisor.
Check the VM’s hardware-virtualization setting
AMD-V is AMD’s name for processor hardware virtualization; Intel calls its counterpart VT-x. In VirtualBox, inspect the information or details for the specific VM you want to check. The command-line method is useful when you want a readable status report:
- Open a terminal or command prompt on the host where VirtualBox is installed.
- Run
VBoxManage showvminfo "VM name" --details, replacingVM namewith the VM’s name. Keep the quotation marks if the name contains spaces. - Find the Hardware Virtualization line. on means the VM’s hardware-virtualization setting is enabled; off means it is disabled in that VM’s configuration.
Oracle’s VBoxManage implementation identifies this field internally as hwvirtex. See the VBoxManage information implementation.
What “on” does—and does not—confirm
The reported value describes the VM’s hardware-virtualization setting. It is not, on its own, conclusive evidence that the host has made AMD-V available to the active VirtualBox hypervisor or that a running VM is currently using it. Treat this as a configuration check, not a universal live-use test.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
VirtualBox documents that hardware virtualization is required for 64-bit guests and multiprocessing support. If the VM will not start or cannot use the expected capabilities, check both the VM’s setting and whether the host permits hardware virtualization.
Do not confuse AMD-V with these other settings
- Nested Paging: A separate hardware-assisted memory feature. Its status is not the same as the Hardware Virtualization field.
- Paravirtualization provider: A separate guest-facing interface; its value does not establish that AMD-V is enabled.
Oracle’s VBoxManage information implementation exposes these as distinct fields.

If hardware virtualization is unavailable
Check the host computer’s BIOS or UEFI settings for a processor-virtualization option. Oracle notes that on many systems these features must first be enabled in BIOS before VirtualBox can use them. The setting’s name and location vary by manufacturer and model, so consult the computer or motherboard documentation rather than relying on a universal menu path. If firmware is already configured, consult the documentation for your host operating system and VirtualBox version to investigate host-level availability.
