Two CIDR ranges overlap if they share even one IP address—including when one range sits entirely inside the other. To check, compare the candidate range with every relevant local, cloud, peered, and connected-network range; for a small inventory, Python’s standard-library ipaddress module can test each pair directly. The check can be quick when the ranges are already known, but “30 seconds” is not a guaranteed duration.
What subnet overlap means
A CIDR range describes a block of IP addresses. Two ranges overlap whenever their address intervals intersect. They do not have to be identical: a narrower range contained within a larger one is still an overlap. Microsoft’s example is 10.0.0.0/16 and 10.0.1.0/24; the second range lies inside the first, so they overlap.

That containment case is easy to miss if you check only whether two CIDR strings are exactly the same. Microsoft’s Azure peering troubleshooting guide defines overlap as any intersection between the address ranges.

Start with the range you plan to add or connect, then compare it with all address ranges it could encounter in the actual topology. Depending on the network, that inventory may include:
#1 Best Overall
- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
- LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection

- MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)
- Existing local subnets and virtual-network address spaces.
- Primary and secondary subnet ranges.
- Networks connected through peering or other connections.
- On-premises address ranges advertised or otherwise connected to the cloud network.
- Static route destinations and other route ranges relevant to the planned connection.
Google Cloud’s subnet documentation specifically calls out potential conflicts with on-premises ranges and static routes, and advises checking peering routes when planning a subnet. The right inventory depends on the connections and routes in your environment; checking only the two new subnets may miss a conflict elsewhere.
How to do a quick overlap check
Compare the ranges manually
- Write down the candidate CIDR and every relevant existing range from the inventory.
- Check each pair for identical ranges, containment in either direction, or any shared interval of IP addresses.
- Mark a pair as overlapping if even part of its address space is shared; do not treat a smaller range inside a larger one as safe.
Test CIDR pairs with Python
Python’s standard-library ipaddress network objects provide an overlaps() method. For example:

- EXTENDED CABLE LENGTH MEASUREMENT: Measure cable length up to 2000 feet (610 m), allowing for precise cable length determination
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, or Split-Pair faults, ensuring thorough fault detection and identification
- BACKLIT LCD DISPLAY: Backlit LCD screen displays cable length, wiremap, cable ID, and test results, ensuring easy readability in various lighting conditions
- EFFICIENT CABLE TRACING: Trace cables, wire pairs, and individual conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (requires analog probe Cat. No. VDV500-123, sold separately), simplifying cable tracing tasks
import ipaddress
left = ipaddress.ip_network("10.0.0.0/16")
right = ipaddress.ip_network("10.0.1.0/24")
print(left.overlaps(right)) # True
Parse each range with ip_network() and call overlaps() for each relevant pair. The official Python library reference documents that the method returns true when networks overlap, including when one contains the other.
Why overlapping ranges can break connectivity
Overlap can prevent a cloud network connection from being created, or make routing ambiguous or incorrect. The exact checks and outcomes depend on the provider and topology, so an overlap warning should be interpreted against the service’s specific rules.

- AWS: VPC peering cannot be created between VPCs with matching or overlapping IPv4 or IPv6 CIDR blocks. If a VPC has multiple IPv4 blocks, an overlap can prevent peering even if you intend to use a different block or IPv6. See AWS’s VPC peering rules.
- Google Cloud: Google checks for overlapping subnet ranges when peering is established and rejects the peering if it finds an overlap. See Google Cloud VPC Network Peering.
- Azure: Virtual networks with overlapping address spaces cannot be peered. Microsoft explains how to inspect address spaces in the portal or with
az network vnet showin its troubleshooting guide.
AWS also warns that overlapping CIDRs can lead to incorrect routing within VPCs; that is a documented risk, not a claim that every overlap produces the same failure in every network. See AWS’s IPAM dashboard documentation.
When a quick comparison is not enough
A manual or script-based check works well when the ranges are few and already known. It becomes less dependable as allocations spread across accounts, projects, peered networks, and on-premises connections. In that setting, compare a one-off check with a maintained IP address management process:

| Approach | Scope and visibility | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Manual or Python comparison | Checks the CIDRs you supply; it will not reveal ranges you have not inventoried. | A small, known set of ranges or a one-time validation. |
| Centralized IPAM | Can provide an inventory and ongoing allocation or overlap visibility, depending on the provider and configuration. | Repeated allocations across multiple networks or teams. |
AWS VPC IPAM can show CIDR overlap status for resources in a scope and supports allocating CIDRs from IPAM pools. See its documentation on monitoring CIDR use by resource and allocating CIDRs from a pool. Microsoft recommends centralized IPAM as a way to avoid future conflicts in its Azure troubleshooting guidance. These capabilities are provider-specific; the sources do not establish feature parity between services.

What to do if you find an overlap
First identify the exact ranges and the connection or route affected, then apply the provider’s rules to decide which range must change. In Azure, if you plan to remove part of a virtual network’s address space, verify first that no subnet or resource is deployed in the range being removed. For future allocations, plan a non-conflicting address inventory and use centralized IPAM where the network’s scale warrants it.
