To verify Steam’s actual application architecture, inspect the executable attached to its running process—not just your Linux installation. Find a Steam PID, resolve /proc/PID/exe, and run file -L on that path. An output containing ELF 64-bit confirms that executable is 64-bit; ELF 32-bit confirms a 32-bit executable.
Steam can launch several processes, so repeat the check for the client, launcher, and helpers that matter to your problem. A 64-bit Linux system can legitimately run a 32-bit Steam process when its compatibility libraries are installed.

Why the process check is the definitive answer
Linux exposes the executable for every running process through the /proc pseudo-filesystem. The /proc/PID/exe entry is a symbolic link to the file that process is executing. Inspecting that link tests the ELF binary itself, which is the only direct way to answer whether the selected Steam process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Commands such as uname -m describe the kernel and host architecture. A startup message saying Steam is running on a 64-bit system describes the environment in which Steam started. Neither statement identifies the ELF class of a particular Steam executable. The process-level test avoids that ambiguity.

The distinction matters when diagnosing missing libraries, graphics-driver problems, game-runtime behavior, or a package that installed an unexpected executable. It also prevents a common false conclusion: a 32-bit Steam process does not prove that Linux itself is installed as 32-bit.
Check a running Steam process step by step
1. List candidate Steam processes
Open a terminal as the same user who launched Steam and run:
pgrep -a -f 'steam|steamwebhelper'The -a option prints each matching PID with its command line. The -f option matches the complete command line, so it can reveal a launcher, the main client, and steamwebhelper processes. Save the PID you want to inspect. If several entries appear, do not assume the first one is the main client.
2. Resolve the executable for the chosen PID
Replace 12345 with the PID from the listing:
pid=12345
readlink -f /proc/$pid/exeThis prints the resolved path. Resolving the link first helps you confirm that you selected the intended process and shows whether the process belongs to a native installation, a wrapper, or another package layout.
3. Read the ELF class
Run:
file -L /proc/$pid/exeThe -L option follows the /proc/PID/exe symbolic link. Read the architecture from the resulting line:
- ELF 64-bit: the executable attached to that PID is a 64-bit application.
- ELF 32-bit: the executable attached to that PID is a 32-bit application.
The check applies to the exact executable represented by the PID. It does not classify every Steam process, every game, or the operating system.

A compact check for a process named exactly steam
When the main process is exposed under the exact name steam, this shell snippet finds the newest matching PID and inspects it immediately:

file -L "/proc/$pid/exe"pgrep -n selects the newest match and -x requires the process name to be exactly steam. The error branch prints “Steam process not found” and exits with status 1 if no such process exists.
This shortcut is intentionally narrower than the broader listing. A launcher may be represented by a shell script, a Flatpak wrapper, or a child process whose name does not match exactly. If the snippet fails, return to pgrep -a -f 'steam|steamwebhelper' and inspect each plausible PID.
Steam may have several architectures at once
Steam is not necessarily one executable. A running session can include a launcher, the main client, web helpers, and game or runtime processes. Architecture is a property of each executable, so compare candidates individually.

For a useful comparison, record each candidate’s PID, resolved executable path, ELF class, packaging source, and role. Packaging may be a native package, Flatpak, or wrapper. This record makes it easier to identify a wrapper that was accidentally checked instead of the client.
Do not confuse host architecture with Steam’s architecture
What uname -m tells you
uname -m reports the machine architecture presented by the running kernel. On a conventional 64-bit x86 installation it commonly prints an x86_64-style value. That is evidence about the kernel, not the ELF class of Steam’s process.

Why a 64-bit system can run 32-bit software
Linux supports 32-bit ELF programs on a 64-bit kernel when the required 32-bit user-space libraries and drivers are installed. Therefore, finding ELF 32-bit for one Steam PID is not proof that the operating system is 32-bit. Conversely, a 64-bit kernel does not prove that every process is 64-bit.
Why Steam still needs 32-bit components
Valve’s Steam for Linux requirements call for a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel together with both 32-bit and 64-bit glibc and graphics drivers. Valve’s package instructions enable both the amd64 and i386 architectures. Those requirements explain why a correctly installed 64-bit Steam environment can contain 32-bit binaries or load 32-bit libraries.
Alternative ways to verify the same executable
file -L is the simplest test, but the ELF header can be read directly with either of these commands:

objdump -f /proc/$pid/exe | grep -E 'file format|architecture'A successful readelf check reports Class: ELF64 or Class: ELF32. objdump prints a file-format and architecture description. Both commands must target /proc/$pid/exe for the PID under investigation; running them against an unrelated Steam file on disk answers a different question.
Troubleshooting failed or confusing checks
The PID disappears
Steam can restart during an update or while changing components. If /proc/$pid/exe vanishes between commands, the PID is no longer valid. Run the broad pgrep command again, choose a current PID, and execute readlink and file without delay.
Access is denied
Procfs access can be restricted by Linux ptrace permissions. Perform the check as the same user who launched Steam. On a machine you administer, use the appropriate administrative access permitted by that system’s security policy rather than changing procfs protections unnecessarily.

The path ends in (deleted)
An unlinked executable may appear in the resolved path with a (deleted) suffix. While the process still exists, try file -L /proc/$pid/exe; the kernel may still expose the executable through procfs. If that fails, inspect the matching Steam installation path on disk, then repeat the process check after Steam starts a fresh executable.

Flatpak launches and other packaging systems can place a wrapper or launcher in the first matching PID. A wrapper may be a script or a small executable that is not the client. Use pgrep -a -f 'steam|steamwebhelper', review every command line, and inspect the PID whose resolved path corresponds to the client or helper you need to diagnose.
No process is found
Steam must be running for /proc/PID/exe to exist. Start Steam, wait for the client window to appear, and rerun the listing. If it still does not match, search the process list using the exact command line shown by your package or launch method, then inspect the resulting PID directly.
The output is not an ELF description
If file -L identifies a shell script, script text, or a wrapper rather than an ELF binary, you have not reached the native executable. Follow the process tree by listing all matching PIDs and select the child process that runs the actual client. A script cannot be classified as a 32-bit or 64-bit ELF application because it is interpreted rather than an ELF executable.
A practical diagnostic workflow for multiple installations
Use this sequence when native packages, Flatpak, or old launchers may coexist:

- Start the Steam installation you intend to test.
- Run
pgrep -a -f 'steam|steamwebhelper'and save every candidate PID and command line. - For each candidate, run
readlink -f /proc/PID/exeand note the path. - Run
file -L /proc/PID/exefor each executable and record whether it is ELF32 or ELF64. - Label each result as launcher, client, web helper, or game/runtime process.
- Match the result to the symptom. For a Steam-client startup problem, use the client PID; for a web-interface failure, use the relevant web-helper PID; for a game failure, inspect the game or runtime separately.
This method prevents an architecture result from one process being incorrectly applied to another. It also leaves a reproducible record that can be compared after an update or a packaging change.
Steam Linux requirements that affect compatibility
The bitness test itself has no special CPU, memory, or storage requirement beyond a running Linux system and the standard command-line utilities. Valve’s Steam for Linux README nevertheless lists these baseline hardware figures:

Valve also announced that, beginning August 15, 2025, Steam would stop supporting Linux distributions with glibc older than 2.31. A system can therefore pass the ELF check and still fail to run Steam correctly if its distribution does not meet the supported glibc baseline. Architecture and library-version compatibility are separate checks.
How to interpret the result in common cases
You see ELF 64-bit for the client
The selected Steam client executable is 64-bit. Continue investigating any startup or game issue through library versions, graphics drivers, permissions, packaging, or the specific child process involved; the ELF class of that PID is not the remaining uncertainty.

You see ELF 32-bit for the client
The selected client process is 32-bit. Confirm that this is the intended client PID rather than a launcher or helper, then check that the 64-bit system has the 32-bit glibc and graphics-driver components Valve requires. Do not infer that the kernel or the full Linux installation is 32-bit.
Different Steam PIDs report different classes
That result is possible because Steam uses separate executables. Keep the PID-to-role mapping and diagnose the process associated with the failure. A 32-bit helper alongside a 64-bit client is not, by itself, evidence of a broken installation.
The client is not running but a launcher is
Inspect the launcher only to understand how Steam was started. The architecture question about Steam itself is answered when the main client process appears. If the client exits immediately, capture the launcher path and then inspect any short-lived client PID quickly; process IDs can change during startup.
