Start by identifying the exact sneaker release and comparing the specific pair—not just its brand—with reliable references. Check several details together, assess the seller and the transaction, and confirm exactly what any resale platform will verify for that listing. A box, receipt, logo, QR code, or single visual clue cannot prove authenticity on its own.
Identify the exact sneaker release
Authentication is model-specific. Before judging a pair, record the brand, model, colorway, release version, and style or product code. Compare those details with a brand listing or established retailer reference for that exact release. Similar colorways and different release years can have legitimate differences, so a broad comparison can lead to false alarms.

Ask the seller to confirm the product code and size. Compare the code shown on the shoe with the listing and the reference. An unexplained mismatch is a reason to pause and verify further; it is not, by itself, a definitive diagnosis.
Request photos that let you compare the pair
Ask for clear, current photographs of both shoes and the relevant details. Ideally, the images should let you check:

- Stitching, logos, size and product labels
- The box label and any included accessories
Check whether the photos appear to show the same pair, then compare small details with references for the exact release. A 10× loupe or pocket magnifier may help you see stitching or label details, but magnification does not authenticate a shoe.
Use mismatches as a reason to stop and check
Differences in product codes, construction, model details, logo placement, or the listing’s description deserve follow-up. So do photos that conflict with one another or with the exact release reference. Ask the seller for clarification or additional images; if the inconsistency remains unexplained, do not proceed until you can verify it.

Look for a seller history you can check, consistent answers, original detailed photos, a protected payment method, and written return terms. Be cautious if a seller pressures you to move off-platform, refuses reasonable photo requests, or offers a price that seems implausibly low. These are risk indicators, not proof that the shoes are counterfeit.

Keep the transaction on a route that gives you a clear record and a way to report a problem. Before paying, check the return conditions, buyer-protection rules, fees, shipping arrangements, and any deadline for raising a dispute.
Compare resale platforms by the route for your exact listing
Authentication services are not interchangeable guarantees. A platform may use different procedures for different listings, sellers, conditions, or destinations. Check the badge or verification status on the specific item and read the terms that apply to your order.

For any platform, the practical questions are which method applies, whether the exact listing is eligible, who ships the item, how discrepancies are handled, what returns or refunds are allowed, and what the total cost and delivery arrangements will be. - When the package arrives, photograph it and the shoes before removing tags or changing the item.
- Compare the delivered pair with the listing photos and the reference for its exact release.
- Save the listing, seller messages, receipt, packaging, and your delivery photos while you check the shoes.
- If something does not match, report it promptly through the platform’s stated process and follow its deadline and documentation requirements.
What counterfeit statistics can—and cannot—tell you
