Use Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report to track AI-feature impressions, then compare the same pages and dates with clicks in the standard Search results Performance report set to Web. Check Google Analytics for organic sessions and on-site outcomes. This can show whether rising AI-feature visibility coincides with fewer clicks, but it cannot prove AI Overviews caused the decline: the dedicated report covers impressions for both AI Overviews and AI Mode, not AI Overview-specific clicks, click-through rate, or query lists.
1. Check whether the Generative AI performance report is available
In Google Search Console, select the property you want to investigate and look for the Generative AI performance report. Google says the report had rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. If it is missing, Google lists too few impressions from AI features or exclusion from those features as possible reasons. Its absence does not tell you whether ordinary Search traffic has changed. The report includes impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can group its data by page, date, country, and device, and use text or multimodal Web search filters. Because it combines two AI experiences, do not describe its total as AI Overview impressions alone.
2. Choose dates that make the comparison meaningful
Start with the suspected decline
Set the report period to cover the dates when clicks began to fall. Compare it with the immediately preceding period of similar length, then check the same dates in the previous year if available. A year-over-year comparison can help reveal recurring seasonal patterns.

Check the longer trend
Google recommends using up to 16 months of Search Console history for context. Look beyond the week or month that drew your attention: a short dip may be part of a recurring cycle, while a sustained change may deserve closer investigation. Google also recommends checking Google Trends for changes in search interest or seasonality. Google Search Central: Debug Google Search traffic drops.
Keep the date ranges identical when you compare the AI report, the standard Search report, and Analytics. Where possible, compare the same pages, countries, and devices rather than relying only on site-wide totals.

3. Look for changes in AI-feature impressions
In the Generative AI performance report, review impressions over time and then group or filter the data to identify which pages changed. Check whether the pages with fewer clicks also gained AI-feature impressions during the same period. Examine date, country, and device breakdowns to see whether an apparent site-wide pattern is actually limited to a particular segment.

Google’s report does not provide feature-specific clicks, CTR, or query lists, so it cannot directly attribute a traffic change to AI Overviews. Google Search Console Help.

4. Compare with ordinary Search clicks and CTR
Use the Web search type
Open Search Console’s standard Search results Performance report, select Web as the search type, and use the same dates as the AI report. Compare clicks, impressions, and CTR; then inspect the pages and, where useful, queries, countries, and devices where the change is concentrated. Google says Search traffic from AI features is included in overall Search Console Web performance data. That makes Web clicks useful context, but they are not a count of clicks specifically from AI Overviews. Google Search Central: AI features and your website.
Read the metrics separately
- Clicks: visits from people clicking a result reported by Search Console.
- Impressions: appearances in Search results as defined by Google. Depending on the result type, an impression may count even when the result was not scrolled into view.
- CTR: clicks divided by impressions. A falling CTR with stable impressions points to a different pattern from a fall in both clicks and impressions; neither pattern alone identifies the cause.
Google also treats an AI Overview as one search-result position, with every link within that Overview receiving the same position. Average position therefore cannot isolate the ranking or traffic effect of an individual cited link. Google Search Console Help: What are impressions, position, and clicks? and Google Search Central: AI features and your website.
5. Check whether the change reaches your site and affects outcomes
Search Console measures Search activity before a visitor arrives. Google Analytics measures behavior on your site. Compare Google organic sessions for the same periods, then check relevant engagement measures and conversions. Clicks and sessions are different measurements, so look for movement in the same direction rather than expecting their totals to match exactly. Google identifies Search Console as the source of truth for Search performance and Analytics as the source of truth for on-site behavior. 6. Test other explanations for the decline
Before connecting a click decline to AI Overviews, examine the pattern and timing. Google recommends segmenting declines by query, URL, country, device, or search appearance and checking for technical issues, site changes, and updates. Use Google Trends to assess changes in interest and seasonality. Google Search Central: Debug Google Search traffic drops.
- Clicks and impressions both fell: investigate whether fewer people searched, pages lost visibility, or a technical or site change affected Search performance.
- Clicks fell while impressions stayed similar: CTR has weakened. Google notes that this can happen when snippets are less compelling or competing result features attract attention; it is not, by itself, proof of an AI Overview effect.
- The decline is limited to particular pages, queries, countries, or devices: focus on those segments instead of attributing the entire site’s change to one feature.
- The timing matches a site change or Google update: investigate that possibility alongside AI-feature impressions rather than treating timing as proof of causation.
7. Describe what the evidence supports
If AI-feature impressions rise while Web clicks fall on the same pages and dates, the data is consistent with a possible relationship. It does not establish that AI Overviews caused the click decline: the AI report includes AI Mode as well and does not expose AI Overview-specific click-through data. Google’s documentation says sites appearing in AI features are included in overall Search traffic in Search Console, not separated into an AI Overview click total. Google Search Central: AI features and your website.
Report the comparison precisely—for example, that specified pages gained AI-feature impressions while Web clicks declined over the same dates—and state which segments you checked. Avoid assigning a percentage of lost traffic to AI Overviews unless you have a separate, defensible method that measures that attribution.

What you can change—and what the reports do not establish
Google says special AI markup or separate AI-specific SEO is not required. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in an AI feature, but meeting those requirements does not guarantee Google will show it. Google Search Central: AI features and your website.
Google also describes a Search Console opt-out control for generative AI Search features. Google says using it means the site will not receive traffic or impressions from those features, while rankings outside them are unaffected. This is a consequential visibility choice, not a diagnostic test for whether AI Overviews caused a decline. Google Search: New opportunities, control and insights for website owners.
