How to Check Whether Google AI Overviews Are Citing Your Website

Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report shows pages receiving impressions across AI Overviews and AI Mode, but it is not a query-by-query citation log.

Use Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report (Search) to see which pages on your site received impressions in Google’s generative Search features. The report includes both AI Overviews and AI Mode, so it is a useful first-party visibility signal—not an AI Overview-only citation counter or a query-by-query log.

How to find the report and check your pages

  1. Open the right property. Sign in to Google Search Console and select the verified property for your website. The report is a property-level Search Console report.
  2. Open the Search report. Go to the Generative AI performance report (Search). Google says it covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search. Discover has a separate generative AI performance report; its data is not part of this Search report.
  3. Review the chart. Set the date range you want to examine and check the overall impression trend. At property level, links to the same site that appear more than once in one generative result count as one chart impression. When you filter by URL, the chart is aggregated by URL.
  4. Open Pages. Use the Pages view to find the URLs that received impressions. Google generally assigns performance data to the canonical URL, and the Pages table uses the final linked URL after redirects.
  5. Segment the results. Use Countries, Devices, and Dates to examine location, device, and time patterns. The report also lets you filter Search type to text-based or multimodal Web searches.
  6. Export a baseline if needed. Download the chart or table to retain a record for later comparison. In exports, values displayed in the report as ~ or - become zero; treat those exported values cautiously rather than assuming the original display meant a definite zero.

What the numbers tell you—and what they do not

Google describes the report as showing how a site performs in generative AI features on Google Search. Its impressions indicate that links to the site were shown in those features. Because Search coverage combines AI Overviews and AI Mode, the total should be described as generative-AI impressions, not simply “AI Overview citations.”

The documented table dimensions are page, country, date, and device. Google does not list search query as a dimension, so this report cannot provide a dependable query-by-query account of which prompt led to a page appearing. Search Console also excludes Search Labs experiments from this report.

As with other Search performance reporting, the table is limited to 1,000 rows, and chart and table totals can differ because of aggregation. The newest data may be preliminary and can change as Google collects it. Google’s June 3, 2026 announcement described the report’s metrics and rollout; it said worldwide rollout was complete by August 31, 2026. For current operational details and limitations, use Google’s Search report documentation.

If the report is missing or shows no impressions

  • Confirm the property. Check that Search Console is showing the verified site property you meant to inspect.
  • Check eligibility and visibility settings. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility does not guarantee Google will crawl, index, or show it. In Search Console, open Settings > Search generative AI and verify the property is included. Google documents inclusion as the default; a property can inherit its setting from a parent property. See Google’s Search generative AI control documentation and its guidance on AI features and your website.
  • Allow for report access and impression thresholds. Google lists access and insufficient generative-AI impressions as possible reasons a property might not see the report, even though the worldwide rollout was completed by August 31, 2026.

What to do with the results

Use the report to identify pages with impressions and to compare visibility patterns over time, by country, or by device. It is a visibility diagnostic, not a guarantee of placement. Google’s current guidance is to apply established SEO fundamentals: allow crawling, make important pages discoverable through internal links, provide useful textual content, and keep structured data consistent with visible page content. Google says there is no extra technical requirement or special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode; see its AI features guidance.

For outcomes such as conversions or time on site, use your analytics tools as appropriate. Do not attribute those outcomes specifically to AI Overviews based on Search Console’s generative-AI report unless the data you have actually supports that attribution.

When third-party tracking tools may help

Google recommends Search Console for measuring visibility in its generative AI features. Third-party tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems, so any results they provide should be treated as vendor-observed estimates—not Google-reported counts or guaranteed ranking insight. They may help with repeatable external query samples or competitor comparisons if you record the monitored query set, geography, device, and collection schedule so the observations can be interpreted and reproduced. Google discusses this limitation in its generative AI optimization guidance.
