1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore buying an Xbox game, match the exact console you own to the game’s generation, edition and format. Check the official Xbox backward-compatibility catalog for original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles, then confirm console support on the game’s Store listing or packaging. Pay particular attention to discs: Xbox Series S has no disc drive, and supported backward-compatible disc games still require the disc to play.
1. Identify your Xbox model
Start with the console itself: Xbox One, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. The distinction matters most if you are considering a physical copy. Xbox Series S is digital-only and does not play discs; Microsoft lists its console specifications and FAQs on the Xbox Series S product page.

If you have a Series X, check whether the exact model you own has a disc drive before buying a physical game. Do not assume that every console in a family accepts discs.

2. Check the game’s generation and exact edition
Xbox Series X|S consoles play Xbox One games in compatibility mode. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit guidance says Xbox One games that do not use Smart Delivery function in that mode. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 games are a separate case: backward compatibility covers selected titles, not every game from those generations. Search the exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog.

Match the edition as well as the title. A game may have multiple editions or versions, and the Store listing or packaging is where to confirm the support and features for the copy you intend to buy. Microsoft’s guidance on Xbox console families and generations is documented in XR-130 Xbox Console Families and Generations (version 2.0, dated November 1, 2025).
3. Confirm the format you are buying
Digital copy
For an owned digital game that is in the backward-compatible catalog, Xbox says it should appear in your library under Ready to Install. Check the listing for the console and edition it supports before purchase.

Disc copy
A disc game needs a console with an optical drive. For supported disc-based backward-compatible games, Xbox downloads the game to console storage, but the disc must remain in the drive to launch it. A disc is not a way to play on a Series S.

4. Treat Smart Delivery as a feature, not a compatibility guarantee
Smart Delivery is available only for supported titles; it is not a universal promise that any Xbox game will run on any console. Microsoft says Xbox Game Studio titles include Smart Delivery, while partner games that use it identify the feature on the digital Store listing or game box. Check the exact title’s listing or packaging rather than inferring support from the Xbox brand or the game’s generation. See Microsoft’s Xbox Series S specifications and FAQs.

5. Verify special disc-to-digital eligibility separately
On August 26, 2026, Xbox Wire announced a disc-to-digital entitlement feature for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games. Xbox Wire said, “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature,” and noted that not every title was available at launch. That feature is separate from ordinary disc compatibility: check whether the specific game is eligible instead of assuming a disc automatically grants a digital copy. Read the Xbox Wire announcement for the feature details.
