An unsupported gadget is not automatically physically dangerous. “Unsupported” usually means its maker no longer supplies software, firmware, security updates, or technical help. That status creates a cybersecurity risk for connected equipment, but it does not by itself prove that the hardware will fail. Check the exact model for support notices and recalls, inspect its condition and behavior, and assess what could happen if it malfunctions. For an internet-connected device that no longer receives security updates, replacement is the safest long-term option. Medical and other safety-critical equipment requires model-specific advice from the manufacturer and an appropriate professional before you change how it is used.
What “unsupported” actually tells you
Support status is a statement about the manufacturer’s service commitment, not a universal safety verdict. A product can remain on a shelf or work normally after its maker stops issuing operating-system, firmware, app, or security updates. Conversely, a newer device can be unsafe because of a defect, damage, overheating, or a recall.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre defines end of support as the point at which a device, software, or system no longer receives updates or technical support. It advises checking the date for the specific product because support periods differ between models. Do not estimate the date from the gadget’s age alone.

- Discontinued: production or normal sales have ended. The maker may still provide updates or repairs for a stated period.
- Unsupported: the maker has ended some or all technical, software, firmware, app, or security assistance. The exact scope matters.
- Second-hand availability: a product may still be sold by another party after the maker has ended support. A listing is not evidence that support continues.
Look for a published support-lifecycle notice rather than assuming that “old” means “unsafe” or that “still sold” means “secure.” The Federal Trade Commission’s 2024 review illustrates how difficult this information can be to find: 161 of 184 smart-product webpages did not state the software-support duration or end date, and basic internet searches did not uncover support information for 124 of those 184 products. Those figures describe that bounded review, not every gadget or manufacturer.

Assess physical safety and cybersecurity separately
Use two parallel questions:
- Could the hardware hurt someone or damage property? Consider electrical faults, batteries, heat, moving parts, chemicals, structural damage, recalls, and the consequences of a malfunction.
- Could the unsupported software expose people or data? Consider missing security patches, network access, accounts, stored information, and whether an attacker could control the device or use it as a route into another system.
A current security patch does not make cracked insulation or a swollen battery safe. A physically intact device can still expose passwords, cameras, home networks, or personal data if known vulnerabilities remain unpatched. Keep the two findings separate when deciding what to do.
Follow this exact-model safety check
1. Record the identity and role of the gadget
Write down the make, exact model number, hardware revision if shown, serial or batch number, and the software or firmware version. Check the rating label, settings screen, original receipt, manual, or the manufacturer’s support page. A family name is not enough: different revisions can have different batteries, radios, recalls, and support dates.
Also record what the gadget does and what it connects to. Note Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, USB, cloud accounts, phone apps, hubs, and other systems. A device that displays music has a different risk profile from one that unlocks a door, controls a heater, monitors a child, or delivers treatment.

- Open the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model.
- Find the support-lifecycle, firmware, security-advisory, or end-of-support information. Check whether the date applies to hardware, operating-system software, the companion app, cloud service, or all of them.
- Check the device’s update screen and the maker’s release notes for the latest available version and its release date.
- Determine whether updates are automatic, manual, subscription-dependent, or blocked because the companion app or cloud service has ended.
- Save a copy or note of the support statement and date you checked. Support pages can change.
“No update found” is not proof that support has ended; it may indicate a failed update process, an incompatible app, or a model mismatch. Contact the maker when the status is unclear. If the maker confirms that security support has ended, treat an internet-connected gadget as an accumulating cybersecurity risk even if it still operates.

3. Search the appropriate recall and safety databases
Search the exact model and, where requested, the serial or batch number in the government recall service for the country where the device is being used. Recall systems are jurisdiction-specific and divided by product category. In the United States, Recalls.gov is a government portal that directs users to the relevant federal agency; a product-specific question should be taken to that agency.
Check the manufacturer’s safety notices as well. A search that returns no recall is not a safety certification: databases can lag, a notice may use a different identifier, or a hazard may be reported without a formal recall. If a notice matches your device, follow its stop-use, return, repair, or replacement instructions rather than testing the product yourself.
4. Inspect it and observe its behavior
Use the manual’s inspection and operating instructions. With the gadget unplugged or safely powered down, look for cracked housings, exposed conductors, frayed cables, loose plugs, damaged ports, swollen or leaking batteries, corrosion, liquid ingress, missing guards, and signs of overheating. Check for unusual smells, smoke, buzzing, sparking, repeated resets, inaccurate readings, unexpected movement, or controls that activate without being touched.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStop using the device while obtaining appropriate advice if it is damaged, overheats, behaves strangely, or is covered by a recall or safety alert. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission warns that smart-device failures can result in fire, burns, electric shock, cuts, or chemical exposure. Do not open the casing or perform electrical repairs unless you are qualified and authorized to do so. There is no universal home inspection that can certify an unspecified gadget as safe.

5. Judge the consequence of failure
Ask what happens if the gadget stops, gives a false result, unlocks at the wrong time, overheats, or loses its connection. A low-consequence failure may justify a short, carefully controlled transition period. A failure involving a lock, alarm, heating appliance, vehicle function, child monitoring, industrial process, or medical treatment requires a much lower tolerance for uncertainty.
Choose between continued use, isolation, repair and replacement
These options address different problems. Hardware repair cannot install a missing security-support program, and network isolation cannot fix a cracked battery. Compare the exact device against all five factors before choosing.
| Option | Physical condition and notices | Security-update status | Network and data exposure | Failure consequence | When it is reasonable |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Continue using as normal | No known damage, abnormal behavior, or applicable recall. | Supported and updating, or a low-risk offline device. | Normal connections and accounts remain acceptable. | Failure is inconvenient rather than dangerous. | Only after the checks show manageable physical and digital risk. |
| Isolate temporarily | Hardware is sound and no stop-use notice applies. | Updates have ended or cannot be verified. | Disconnect from internet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other networks where practical; avoid accounts and sensitive data. | Failure remains possible, so the device cannot perform a safety-critical role. | A short transition while arranging a supported replacement. |
| Manufacturer-approved repair | A known repairable defect, with an authorized procedure or service. | Repair may restore function but does not necessarily restore security support. | Exposure remains unless the software lifecycle is also supported. | Use only if the repaired device’s role is still appropriate. | When the maker or qualified service provider specifies the repair and parts. |
| Replace | Required for a recall, unsafe damage, or an unrepairable condition. | A supported product can receive security fixes. | Move accounts and data to the supported device and retire the old one securely. | Best choice where a malfunction could cause serious harm. | The preferred long-term response to an unsupported connected gadget. |
The UK National Cyber Security Centre states, in its obsolete-products guidance, “The only fully effective way to mitigate this risk is to stop using the obsolete product.” That statement concerns cybersecurity risk. It is not a claim that every old product is physically dangerous, and temporary controls do not remove all digital risk.
If you must keep an unsupported connected gadget briefly
Replacement is safer, but a short transition may be unavoidable. Apply the controls that fit the device without disabling an essential safety function:

- Disconnect it from the internet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other networks where possible. Remove it from cloud accounts and hubs only if doing so will not create a physical hazard.
- Do not log into email, banking, work, health, or other sensitive accounts on it, and do not store important personal or business data there.
- Remove unneeded apps, disable unnecessary services, and avoid unknown links, attachments, accessories, and files.
- Change passwords from a supported device if the old gadget may have exposed an account. Enable multifactor authentication where the service supports it.
- Keep the device away from critical networks and systems. Network segmentation can reduce spread, but it is not a guarantee against compromise.
- Set a replacement date and keep the device under observation for heat, battery swelling, strange behavior, or new safety notices.
Do not treat isolation as a permanent safety certificate. The NCSC’s wording identifies stopping use as the fully effective cybersecurity mitigation; the controls above only reduce exposure while you arrange that outcome.

Do not apply generic “disconnect it” advice to a medical device, alarm, lock, heater, vehicle system, or another gadget whose connectivity is part of its essential function. Disconnecting may stop alerts, remote monitoring, treatment, or emergency operation.
For a medical device, contact the manufacturer and the treating clinician or other relevant professional with the exact model, serial number, software version, symptoms, and any alert or recall notice. Follow the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s patient guidance: install manufacturer-supplied patches, ask the manufacturer or health-care provider about device-specific risk, and report unusual behavior or alerts. Do not install fixes found online. The FDA’s warning is explicit: “While you should ensure you keep your device up-to-date with any manufacturer-supplied patches, don’t try to apply other fixes to the device yourself—especially ones you may find on the internet.”

What to do when something goes wrong
There is heat, smoke, smell, sparking or a swollen battery
Stop using it, disconnect power only when that can be done safely, keep people away, and follow the manual’s emergency instructions. Do not puncture, crush, or open a swollen battery. Seek qualified service or emergency assistance appropriate to the hazard.
The device gives incorrect readings or acts unpredictably
Stop relying on it for decisions that could cause harm. Preserve the error message, time, firmware version, and circumstances. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider; for medical equipment, contact the clinician as well.
A recall or safety alert matches the model
Stop use as instructed by the notice. Do not substitute a generic part or attempt an unapproved workaround. Follow the stated return, replacement, refund, or repair process and keep proof of the model and serial number.

You cannot establish support status
Treat uncertainty as a reason to limit exposure, not as evidence that the device is safe. Keep it offline where that does not create a physical hazard, avoid sensitive data, and ask the manufacturer for a written model-specific answer.
Document the decision before you keep using it
Make a short record containing the exact identifiers, support page and date checked, latest update, recall searches and jurisdictions, physical findings, connections and accounts, the consequence of failure, and the person or organization consulted. Set a review date for battery condition, new notices, and replacement availability. This record prevents a temporary exception from quietly becoming indefinite use and gives a technician the details needed for a precise answer.
Limits of broad regulatory claims
Advice from Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom is useful practical guidance, but it is not one universal legal standard. The European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act creates support-period and vulnerability-handling duties for manufacturers of covered products with digital elements. Those duties should not be presented as a retrospective safety certificate for every existing gadget. Your local recall authority, product category, and manufacturer’s instructions control the specific case.
The practical verdict
An unsupported gadget can be physically sound yet digitally risky. Identify the exact model, verify its support lifecycle, search the correct recall databases, inspect for damage and abnormal behavior, and weigh the consequence of failure. Replace unsupported connected equipment whenever practical; if a short delay is unavoidable, reduce network and data exposure without disabling an essential function. For medical or safety-critical products, obtain model-specific advice before disconnecting, repairing, replacing, or changing the way the device is used.
