Before installing an open-source smartwatch app, verify the exact release and where its package came from, check whether the installed binary can be linked to the published source, and decide whether its permissions fit its features. Then review its maintenance and data practices. These checks can uncover reasons to pause, but none alone proves an app is safe.
What open source can—and cannot—tell you
A public source-code repository makes inspection possible; it does not establish that the app you install was built from that code. A reproducible-build comparison for the exact release can strengthen that link, but it cannot show that the source itself has no harmful behavior.

Similarly, a platform signature and a trusted distribution route help establish a package’s provenance and integrity, not the developer’s intent or the app’s privacy practices. Treat each check as one piece of evidence, not a safety certificate.

Check the app and its release before installing
- Identify the exact app and target. Note the app name, publisher or maintainer, version, intended watch operating system, and package source. If there is a phone companion, assess it separately: Android says a permission granted to a phone app does not automatically grant it to the Wear OS app. Android Developers explains Wear OS permission behavior.
- Trace the project and release. Start at the app’s official store listing or project page and follow its link to the source repository. Check that the release belongs to the claimed project, that its version and release notes make sense, and that the project explains where its binaries come from. A similarly named repository is not enough. A package hosted on an unrelated file-sharing site needs its own provenance check.
- Look for verification of that specific binary. For an Android package, check whether the exact app version has a published reproducible-build result or independent rebuild. F-Droid describes rebuilding an app from source and comparing signatures; build tools and environments can complicate an exact match. A match supports a correspondence between source and package, but does not establish that the source is benign. If no current result is published for the version you plan to install, treat that link as unverified. Read F-Droid’s explanation of reproducible builds.
Match permissions to what the watch app does
List the sensitive permissions the app requests and ask what feature needs each one, whether the explanation is specific, and whether useful features remain if access is denied. Google’s Wear OS permission guidance describes user control over watch-app permissions; its example of location for tracking a run shows why context matters. Location can make sense for run tracking, while the same request from an unrelated simple watch face merits a clear explanation.

Android’s developer guidance recommends meaningful functionality without mandatory permissions: “In your Wear apps, provide meaningful functionality without requesting any permissions.” The Wear OS permission guidance also makes clear that phone and watch grants are distinct. A permission that seems excessive is a reason to ask questions or decline, not by itself proof of malicious behavior.
Use the normal installation route and heed warnings
Prefer the platform’s normal trusted distribution route when available, and check the publisher identity and any operating-system warnings. Apple states that executable code on watchOS must be signed with an Apple-issued certificate and describes code-signature validation in its platform security guide. Android signatures play a role in permission checks and app updates, as described in the Android Open Source Project’s app security best practices.

A valid signature helps associate a package with a signing identity and detect relevant alterations; it does not certify that an app behaves well. Do not bypass system warnings or install an unexplained package through developer tools just because its source is public. Sideloading changes the trust path; it is not an extra safety check.
Review maintenance and data handling
Look at recent releases, how maintainers handle security-related issues, whether dependencies appear maintained, the privacy disclosures, and what services the app contacts. Consider whether those services fit the app’s stated purpose. There is no universal age cutoff that proves a project is abandoned: weigh the release history and responses to reported problems together, and note what you could not verify.

For any particular app, these are checks to perform on the actual project and version, not conclusions that can be drawn from the label “open source.”
Compare apps using the same evidence
If you are choosing between two or more candidates, compare the same questions for each rather than relying on a single badge or overall impression.

When to pause
- The package’s origin or publisher cannot be traced to the project.
- A sensitive permission has no convincing connection to the app’s features.
- The project provides no clear account of its release or data practices.
- An installation prompt asks you to ignore a warning or use an unexplained package.
- A security concern is unresolved and the project offers no useful response or context.
Any one of these is a reason for caution, not a definitive verdict. A clean set of checks is evidence in the app’s favor, not a guarantee of safety.
