First compare its speed with another device under similar conditions; then check whether the problem follows the older device, its location, or the whole network.
Is the old device slow, or is it slowing other devices?
These are different problems. A phone or laptop may be slow because its Wi-Fi adapter, driver, signal, or supported wireless standard is limited. Separately, a slower client can use more shared airtime to send and receive data, potentially reducing throughput for other devices on the same wireless channel. TP-Link describes this behavior in its Omada EAP documentation; the effect depends on the network and is not predictable from a device’s age alone.

Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance also notes that connected devices compete for bandwidth. That does not mean every older client will noticeably slow a home network. A repeatable comparison is more useful than assuming the oldest device is responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare devices under the same conditions
- Record a baseline. Run a speed test on the older device and note its location, whether it uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and any major downloads or streams happening at the time. Repeat on another device if possible. Microsoft recommends testing network speed before making changes in its Windows connection troubleshooting; Dell also advises considering the internet plan and client adapter when investigating slow performance.
- Test a newer device nearby. Use the same test, from the same spot, close in time. If the newer device is consistently faster while the older one is slow, focus on the older client’s Wi-Fi capability, band, driver, or signal. If both are slow, investigate shared causes such as coverage, interference, background traffic, router performance, or the internet service. Google recommends checking speed and contacting the provider if results are below expectations.
- Move the older device closer to the router or access point. Repeat the comparison. A substantial improvement nearby points toward distance, barriers, or placement rather than age alone. Microsoft’s guide to Wi-Fi and home layout explains that 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther and penetrates obstacles better, while 5 GHz and 6 GHz can provide higher throughput at shorter ranges and with less wall penetration.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if practical. Test a computer connected to the router by cable. If wired performance is much better, investigate the wireless link; if wired and wireless results are both poor, the router’s internet connection, ISP service, or another shared factor may be involved. This is a diagnostic clue, not proof: the cable, router port, computer adapter, and test conditions can also limit the result.
Read the pattern of results
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Only the older device is slow, including near the router | A client-specific limitation is more likely than a network-wide slowdown. | Check its supported Wi-Fi standards and bands, adapter, and driver. |
| The older device improves substantially near the router | Signal, distance, obstructions, or placement may be the main issue. | Compare locations and bands; consider whether a nearer access point is available. |
| Several Wi-Fi devices are slow, but Ethernet is much faster | The wireless portion deserves closer attention. | Check coverage, band, channel congestion, and active wireless traffic. |
| Wi-Fi and Ethernet are both slow across devices | A shared router, internet-service, or background-traffic issue is more plausible. | Check the subscribed service and provider status, then investigate the router. |
These patterns narrow the possibilities rather than identify a cause with certainty. Retest under comparable conditions before acting on a single result.

Check what the older client and router support
Find the client’s Wi-Fi adapter and the standards and frequency bands it supports. Examples include Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n), Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). The router and client need a compatible standard and band to use that connection mode; a newer router does not give an older client capabilities it lacks. Dell’s adapter guidance recommends accounting for both router and client capabilities.
If the router’s app or administration page shows a connected device’s band or connection rate, note it as a clue, not as a substitute for a speed test. Some routers combine bands under one network name; Windows may select an available band automatically. Apple recommends enabling the radio modes supported by the router so each device can use the fastest mode it supports in its router settings guidance.

If an older device cannot see or join a newer network, check its driver and the router maker’s compatibility guidance. For example, eero documents a legacy mode for certain older-driver devices on specified eero 6 models and warns it may reduce speeds; that option is not universal. See eero’s instructions for the models and circumstances it covers.
Consider airtime fairness only if your router supports it
Wi-Fi clients sharing a channel take turns using airtime. A client transmitting at a slower wireless rate may take longer to send or receive the same data, which can reduce overall throughput in some multi-rate networks. Some access points offer airtime fairness to manage those opportunities, but availability and behavior vary by model. NETGEAR’s instructions for turning on Air Time Fairness apply to supported access points, not every router.

Consult the manual for your specific model. If you test a fairness option, change only that setting, repeat the same device comparisons, and check that older or specialized devices still connect and behave normally. Do not assume enabling it will improve every network.
