Scientists do not diagnose a Martian rock from one striking feature. They combine its geological setting and textures with mineral identification and chemical measurements to reconstruct what formed first and what changed later. Clays, veins and other water-related minerals can show that fluids interacted with rock; particular minerals and their context can point to heated groundwater. At Jezero crater, rover findings show that water and heat could leave evidence in separate episodes of the same rock’s history.
What evidence can show that water altered a Martian rock?
Water alteration is inferred from minerals and their distribution, supported by chemistry and geological context. Clay minerals are one clue because water is incorporated into their structure. Veins, fractures and changes in mineral chemistry can help indicate where fluids moved and what they did, but no single visible feature establishes a complete history.

For example, Curiosity’s CheMin instrument analyzes powdered samples to identify minerals and help scientists assess their formation, deposition or alteration. NASA explains the instrument’s role in its overview of Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin). Clay minerals have also helped Curiosity identify places where water altered rock; NASA describes such evidence in its report on erased rock records and clues in Gale crater.
How do scientists distinguish the original rock from later changes?
First, scientists consider what kind of rock they are examining—igneous, sedimentary or otherwise—and how it is layered, fractured, veined or situated in the landscape. That context narrows possible histories, but it does not by itself prove that a particular alteration event occurred.

Jezero crater illustrates why the distinction matters. Perseverance identified igneous rocks on the crater floor that also contained water-altered minerals. The rocks’ original formation and their later contact with water are separate parts of the story; the alteration was not pervasive throughout the floor rocks. NASA describes the findings and the rover’s observations in its Jezero crater report.
What clues point to heated water?
Evidence of water does not automatically mean the water was hot. To argue for heated groundwater, scientists look for a mineral assemblage and chemical context consistent with hot fluids, then check whether the interpretation fits the rock’s textures and geological sequence.

NASA’s 2026 account of Perseverance findings at Jezero’s rim highlights fluorite as a clue to a later heated underground-water episode. Fluorite typically forms when hot water circulates through volcanic rocks, but its presence should be understood as evidence interpreted in this particular geological setting—not as a universal, standalone test for heat. The report describes signs of at least three separate water interactions in these rim rocks, indicating a history with multiple episodes rather than a simple choice between “water” and “heat.” See NASA’s account of the Jezero rim discovery.

Different instruments measure different properties. Scientists compare the results rather than treating any one measurement as a direct verdict on a rock’s entire history.

- Spectroscopy and remote sensing: Perseverance’s SuperCam uses laser and spectroscopic measurements to characterize targets. Its near-infrared observations identified water-altered minerals in Jezero floor rocks, while the combined evidence indicated that alteration was not widespread there.
- Elemental chemistry: PIXL measures fine-scale elemental chemistry at selected targets, helping scientists examine how features differ from nearby material.
- Laboratory gas analysis: Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) heats powdered sample material to release gases for analysis. That heating is part of the instrument’s procedure; it is not evidence that the rock was naturally heated on Mars. NASA describes the process in its SAM sample analysis report.
When texture, mineralogy, chemistry and setting support the same sequence, the interpretation is stronger. If they do not, scientists have to keep multiple histories in consideration.
What Jezero’s rim and Gale crater show about the limits of interpretation
Jezero’s rim and floor are distinct localities, and their findings should not be treated as interchangeable. The rim evidence points to multiple water interactions, including a later episode interpreted as heated groundwater. The floor rocks, by contrast, show that igneous material can be altered by water without that alteration being pervasive.

Findings from Gale crater offer another useful check against overgeneralizing. A NASA-hosted review describes localized geochemical or mineralogical evidence for hydrothermal alteration in the studied materials, but reports that CheMin had not found abundant or widespread hydrothermal phases such as serpentine, chlorite and prehnite. That review concerns Gale crater—not all Martian rocks—and is available from the NASA Technical Reports Server.

Cheyava Falls shows how several intriguing clues can still leave a rock’s history unresolved. In 2024, NASA described white calcium sulfate veins, reddish material suggestive of hematite, and millimeter-scale pale spots with dark halos. PIXL found iron and phosphate in the halos, and SHERLOC scans indicated organic compounds. Those observations did not settle exactly how the rock formed or how much nearby rocks may have heated it.

Perseverance project scientist Ken Farley said: “On the one hand, we have our first compelling detection of organic material, distinctive colorful spots indicative of chemical reactions that microbial life could use as an energy source, and clear evidence that water — necessary for life — once passed through the rock. On the other hand, we have been unable to determine exactly how the rock formed and to what extent nearby rocks may have heated Cheyava Falls and contributed to these features.” NASA’s 2024 mission report gives the observations and uncertainty.
A 2025 NASA Science update later reported that the Sapphire Canyon sample from Cheyava Falls was discussed in a Nature paper as containing potential biosignatures. “Potential” is important: further study is needed before drawing conclusions about life, and the finding does not resolve the rock’s formation or heating history. See NASA Science’s September 2025 update. Organic compounds can also form through nonbiological processes.
Quick Recap
A practical way to read claims about Martian rocks
- Check the locality: Jezero rim, Jezero floor and Gale crater have different evidence records.
- Ask what was measured: A mineral identification, elemental map or spectroscopic observation supports a different kind of claim.
- Separate water from hot water: Aqueous alteration alone does not establish hydrothermal conditions.
- Look for a sequence: Distinguish the original rock from later fluid interactions and ask what evidence supports each proposed episode.
- Keep uncertainty visible: A compelling clue may narrow the possibilities without identifying one unique formation history.
