Start by checking the seller and identifying the jersey’s exact season, brand, and retail tier. Then compare its details with official product information for that model and look for multiple warning signs together—such as misspellings, poor stitching, misaligned graphics, or a price far below comparable jerseys. No single tag, logo, construction detail, or price is a reliable verdict on its own.
How to check an NHL jersey before buying
- Identify the exact jersey. Ask for its brand, season, team, player, and claimed tier—for example, Fanatics Authentic Pro, Premium, or Breakaway—or the specific older adidas, Reebok, or CCM model. Ask whether names and numbers are original or were added later.
- Check the seller and listing. Prefer a recognized league, Fanatics, or team-store channel, and review the seller’s history, return terms, and whether the listing uses photos of the actual item. The NHL named NHLShop.com, NHLShop.ca, Fanatics.com, Fanatics.ca, NHL team stores, and NHL Shop NYC as sales locations for its 2024 Fanatics assortment. The NHL’s 2024 announcement identifies those channels, but a marketplace listing or product title alone does not establish that a particular seller or garment is genuine.
- Find the matching official product details. Compare the same season, team, and tier—not just another jersey with similar colors. Current Fanatics features are not a checklist for an older adidas, Reebok, or CCM jersey.
- Inspect the jersey and its construction. Check spelling, NHL marks, stitching and materials, and whether numbers, crests, and other elements are centered and aligned. See whether the construction matches the claimed tier.
- Compare like-for-like prices. Compare the same model, era, tier, and condition. A steep discount can be a reason to investigate further, but price alone does not prove a jersey is counterfeit.
- Pause if important details are unclear. Request clear close-ups of labels, the NHL Shield, crests, numbers, and seams. Ask for claimed certificates or proof of purchase if available. If the seller will not provide useful photos or documentation, consider walking away.

How genuine NHL jersey tiers differ
A genuine retail jersey can have heat-pressed graphics. Construction varies by tier, so a heat-pressed crest is not by itself evidence of a fake.

For current Authentic Pro listings, a holographic NHL Shield is among the product details described by Fanatics’ Nashville listing and NHL Shop’s listing. Treat it as one detail to compare with the claimed product, not a universal authentication test for every retail, resale, or vintage jersey.
Match the jersey’s details to its era
Fanatics became the NHL’s official on-ice outfitter beginning with the 2024-25 season under a 10-year agreement. Adidas had been the on-ice outfitter since 2017-18 and was to finish the following season, according to the NHL’s agreement announcement.

That change matters when evaluating resale or vintage jerseys: first establish the period and model, then compare its labels and construction with that era. An older jersey does not become suspicious simply because it lacks current Fanatics details. Likewise, a tag or hologram that appears on one current product listing cannot authenticate every jersey generation.
