NFL Support says teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff, so an earlier injury report is not the final game-day decision.
Check the game-day inactive report
- Confirm the matchup and kickoff time. Make sure you have the right team and game; NFL.com organizes its inactive reports by matchup.
- Open the current NFL.com inactive report close to kickoff. Find the matchup, then check the list under the player’s team. NFL.com’s Week 1 2026 report, published September 13, 2026, shows this matchup-by-matchup format; its listed statuses apply to those games, not future weeks.
- Look for an official team update if the league report is not available yet. Check the team’s official site or channels for a game-specific announcement, and prefer the most recent official update.
- Refresh near the pregame window. NFL Support’s “Auto-Swap Inactives” says: “Players are designated ‘Inactive’ by their NFL teams about 90 minutes before the game is scheduled to start if they are unable to play.” The support page’s publication date is not shown.
The 2017 NFL Injury Report Policy also describes clubs submitting inactive lists at a meeting 90 minutes before the game. That is a historical policy document; for a current decision, use the current league or team report rather than assuming every operational detail in the old policy is unchanged.

Know what each status does—and does not—tell you
| Information | What it tells you | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Listed inactive for the specific game | The team has designated the player inactive for that matchup. | Use the report for the correct game and kickoff. |
| Out, Doubtful, or Questionable | A game-status designation in the NFL injury-report process; it is not the final game-day inactive list. | Check the game-specific list near kickoff. |
| Full, limited, or no practice | The player’s practice participation, not a game-day activation announcement. NFL.com presents Practice Status and Game Status separately. | Check the player’s game status and then the inactive report. |
| Player appears on the roster | Roster membership, not confirmation that the player will be active for a particular game. NFL roster administration includes an Active/Inactive List. | Use the matchup’s game-day report. |
| Player is not shown as inactive | By itself, this is not positive official confirmation that the player is active. | Check for a later league or team update; this distinction follows from the separate reporting stages described by the NFL sources. |
Why an early check can be misleading
The weekly injury report is an earlier reporting layer. Practice participation and game-status labels can inform expectations, but they are not the same as the game-specific inactive list. A player’s status may change after a weekly report, and an old screenshot, cached page, fantasy projection, or early-week label can be out of date.
Always treat an inactive designation as applying to that one game. Do not carry it forward to a later week, and do not use a general roster page as a substitute for the matchup’s report.
