On your iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions,” Apple identifies the phone as unlocked. That confirms its lock status—not that it will work with every carrier. Check the intended network’s SIM or eSIM support, the exact iPhone model’s bands for your region, and the carrier’s activation requirements separately.
Check the iPhone’s carrier-lock status
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Find Carrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions,” the iPhone is unlocked, according to Apple Support.
If a carrier is shown, or the status is missing or unclear, contact the carrier the phone is currently locked to and ask it to confirm the status. Apple cannot unlock it: Apple says, “Only your current carrier can unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier.” The carrier determines eligibility and handles the request; Apple says processing may take a few days. Check whether the unlocked iPhone will work on your network
Unlocking removes a carrier restriction; it does not guarantee that the phone supports a different carrier’s service. Before switching networks or relying on service while abroad, check these separately:

- SIM type: Confirm that the carrier supports the iPhone’s physical SIM or eSIM configuration. Regional iPhone models can differ in their SIM and eSIM capabilities.
- eSIM availability: Ask whether the carrier supports eSIM for the specific plan you intend to use. Follow that carrier’s instructions to add and activate it.
- Model and bands: Identify your exact iPhone model and check that its cellular bands are supported where you plan to use it. Apple’s international eSIM guidance notes that model and regional differences matter; confirm detailed compatibility with the intended carrier.
- Plan and activation: Verify that the plan can be activated on your device and in the relevant country or region. Network support and plan terms are carrier-specific.
For travel or cross-border use, do not treat “No SIM restrictions” as proof of universal compatibility. Check the destination carrier’s current eSIM and plan requirements as well as the model’s bands.

After the carrier unlocks the iPhone
For a different physical SIM, Apple says you can insert the new SIM to finish activation. For an eSIM, use the new carrier’s setup instructions. If activation does not complete, contact the carrier and consult Apple’s unlock guidance.
If you see “Invalid SIM” or “No SIM”
Those messages do not by themselves prove that the iPhone is carrier locked. Check the active plan and follow the carrier’s troubleshooting steps before drawing that conclusion.

- Restart the iPhone.
- Check whether a carrier settings update is available.
- For a physical SIM, make sure it is seated properly; ask the carrier to test or replace the SIM if the error continues.
- For eSIM problems, contact the carrier.
Apple lists these steps in its guidance for Invalid SIM or No SIM messages. If the lock status remains uncertain, ask the current carrier to check it.
