An imported iPhone will work on your carrier only when four separate conditions are satisfied: the phone is not carrier-locked, its exact regional model has a SIM configuration your plan can use, its LTE and 5G bands match the network, and the carrier accepts that model for activation with the features you need. Check all four before relying on the phone; an unlocked status or a matching band list by itself is not a guarantee.
The four checks that decide compatibility
International iPhones are not one universal hardware version. Apple can sell different model numbers, SIM arrangements and radio combinations in different markets. Your carrier also controls activation, plan eligibility and features such as 5G, VoLTE, hotspot and Wi-Fi Calling. Treat the decision as four independent gates:

| Check | What to verify | Why it matters | Possible failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrier lock | Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock | A locked phone may reject another carrier’s SIM or eSIM. | The original carrier must unlock it; Apple cannot do so. |
| Exact model and region | Model identifier, iPhone generation and country or region of sale | Regional versions can have different SIM trays and radio support. | You may buy an eSIM-only phone when your plan requires a physical SIM, or miss a needed band. |
| SIM and eSIM path | Whether the phone has a nano-SIM tray and whether your plan supports eSIM | The phone and plan must use a compatible activation method. | An eSIM-only model cannot accept a physical SIM card. |
| Network and carrier acceptance | LTE/5G bands, model-specific activation, plan and feature support | Coverage depends on both radio hardware and the carrier’s approval. | Activation, 5G, VoLTE, hotspot or Wi-Fi Calling may be unavailable even when basic service works. |
Apple recommends checking carrier and band support, while the destination carrier makes the final account and activation decision. Verify the phone’s identity before contacting the carrier so you receive an answer about the actual device rather than a broad answer about an iPhone family.
1. Record the exact iPhone identity
Find the model and serial information
On the phone, open Settings > General > About. Record the model name, model number, serial number and IMEI. If the phone is still sealed, obtain the model number from the box and ask the seller for the IMEI or an image of the About screen. Do not rely only on a label such as “iPhone 16.” A single generation can have multiple regional variants.

The model number is especially important because carrier and band compatibility can be tied to that identifier. Keep the country or region where the device was originally sold beside the model number. A phone bought in one country and later used in another can have a different SIM arrangement from a phone with the same generation name sold locally.
Confirm the sale region
Ask for the original sales region, not merely the seller’s current location. A reseller may import a phone through a third country, and a used phone may have changed owners several times. Apple’s regional SIM documentation is organized by model and availability, so use that information for the exact generation rather than applying a rule from a different iPhone.
2. Check whether the iPhone is unlocked
Use the on-device Carrier Lock field
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock.
- Look for Apple’s exact status, “No SIM restrictions.”
“No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked for SIM use. If another restriction appears, or the field is missing or unclear, do not assume the phone is unlocked. Ask the carrier that originally supplied or locked the device to confirm its status.

What to do when it is locked
Only the current or original carrier can process an unlock. Apple does not remove carrier locks, and a third-party unlocking service cannot replace the carrier’s official process. Requirements and processing time are set by that carrier. Obtain written confirmation that the unlock is complete before paying for a plan or depending on the phone during travel.
An unlocked phone is necessary, but it is not sufficient. You still need a compatible SIM path, supported radio bands and carrier approval for the plan and features you want.
3. Determine whether you need eSIM or a physical SIM
Identify the phone’s SIM hardware
Regional iPhones can be eSIM-only or can combine eSIM with a physical nano-SIM tray. Check the phone itself for a SIM tray and confirm the exact model in Apple’s regional SIM guide. Do not generalize from one generation: the regions listed for an eSIM-only version or a tray-equipped version depend on the model and release.

If a tray is present, the phone can accept a compatible nano-SIM, subject to the carrier’s provisioning rules. If there is no tray, the phone must be activated through eSIM. A physical SIM cannot be inserted through an adapter or software setting.

- eSIM-only iPhone: Confirm that the destination carrier supports eSIM on the specific plan and account type. Ask whether a foreign-market model can receive that carrier’s activation profile.
- Phone with a nano-SIM tray: Confirm that the carrier supplies a compatible nano-SIM and permits that model on the plan. The presence of a tray does not guarantee activation.
- Dual-SIM use: Check both the physical-SIM/eSIM combination and the carrier’s support for simultaneous lines before purchasing a second plan.
For a prepaid, business or data-only plan, ask the carrier separately about eSIM eligibility. Carriers can apply different rules to different plan types even on the same network.
4. Compare the exact LTE and 5G bands
Use the model-specific technical specification
Find the official cellular specification for the exact model number and list its LTE and 5G bands. Then compare those bands with the destination carrier’s published network information. Compare the complete list, not just whether the phone says “5G.” A phone can connect to one band and still lack another band used for coverage, capacity or indoor reach in your area.
Band support is a hardware question; network access is a carrier question. Matching frequencies does not force a carrier to provision the device, and a carrier’s general coverage map does not prove that every imported variant is accepted.
Interpret a regional example correctly
Apple’s iPhone 16e specification page lists cellular bands for model A3212 and notes that the SIM tray is available on models purchased outside the United States. This illustrates why both the model identifier and sale region matter. It is not evidence that every iPhone 16e, every A3212 phone or every imported iPhone will work with a particular carrier. Use the specification for your own model and market.
Ask about network features beyond bands
When comparing specifications, ask the carrier whether it supports the services you actually use on that model:

These services can depend on carrier configuration, account eligibility and device approval, not only on the presence of a radio band.
5. Get a model-specific activation decision from the carrier
Give support the information it needs
Contact the destination carrier through its official support or sales channel. Provide the exact model identifier, IMEI if requested, original purchase region, unlocked status and the plan you intend to use. Ask the representative to check the device in the carrier’s activation system rather than answering from the iPhone family name.
Ask these questions directly:
- Will you activate this exact model and IMEI on the chosen plan?
- Does the plan support eSIM on this imported model, or must I use a physical SIM?
- Will 5G, VoLTE, hotspot and Wi-Fi Calling be enabled?
- Are there restrictions for prepaid, business, data-only or roaming use?
- Is the device eligible for number transfer and emergency calling?
Request a case number or written confirmation when possible. Carrier systems and product lineups change, so a current answer for the exact model is more reliable than an old forum post or a seller’s generic “unlocked” description.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUnderstand what Apple can and cannot confirm
Apple publishes model specifications and selected country or carrier feature information. Those pages help you identify bands and SIM configurations, but the carrier remains the authority for account eligibility, activation and the services attached to your plan.
6. Verify Dual SIM separately
Using two lines introduces additional conditions. Apple says the iPhone must be unlocked, unless both plans are from the same carrier. Both plans must be active, and the carrier or carriers must support the relevant Dual SIM feature, including eSIM where applicable.
Checklist for two lines
- Confirm the phone’s hardware combination, such as eSIM plus nano-SIM or two eSIM profiles, for that regional model.
- Confirm that each carrier supports its line type on the phone.
- If the carriers are different, verify that the phone shows “No SIM restrictions.”
- Ask whether both lines can remain active for calls, messages and data in the way you need.
- Check which line supplies cellular data and whether data switching is supported on your plans.
A phone can support Dual SIM in principle while a particular carrier blocks one of the plans or limits features. Treat each line as a separate activation check.

Use a decision matrix before you buy
| Carrier Lock | SIM path | Bands match | Carrier accepts model | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No SIM restrictions | Supported | Yes | Yes, with required features | Suitable for the stated plan, subject to normal activation. |
| Locked | Any | Any | Not relevant yet | Do not rely on it until the original carrier completes an unlock. |
| Unlocked | Not supported | Any | Possibly | Not suitable for that activation method; choose a supported eSIM or SIM option. |
| Unlocked | Supported | Incomplete | Possibly | Basic service may be limited or unreliable; verify the missing bands with the carrier. |
| Unlocked | Supported | Yes | No or unknown | Do not assume activation; obtain carrier approval first. |
| Unlocked | Supported | Yes | Yes, but requested features excluded | Decide whether the phone still meets your needs; matching bands alone is not enough. |
Common scenarios and the right answer
“Will my iPhone from another country work with my carrier?”
There is no country-only answer. Identify the exact model and region, check Carrier Lock, determine whether it is eSIM-only, compare LTE and 5G bands, and ask the carrier to approve that model and plan. Two phones with the same retail name can produce different results when their regional hardware differs.

“How do I know if an iPhone is unlocked?”
Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should show “No SIM restrictions.” If it does not, contact the carrier that supplied the phone. Do not treat the ability to reach the Home Screen, a seller’s statement or a matching model number as proof of an unlocked status.
“Can I use a foreign iPhone with an eSIM?”
Yes only when the phone supports eSIM and the destination carrier supports eSIM activation for that model and plan. An eSIM-only phone has no physical-SIM fallback, so confirm eSIM support before purchase. A phone with both eSIM and a nano-SIM tray gives you more activation choices, but the carrier must still accept the device.
“Will an overseas iPhone support my carrier’s 5G?”
Check the exact model’s 5G bands against the carrier’s network, then ask whether the carrier enables 5G for that model and account. Band overlap may allow some 5G coverage without guaranteeing every 5G mode, location or feature.
Troubleshoot a phone that will not activate
The phone says SIM not supported
Return to Carrier Lock and verify the status. If the phone is locked, only the original carrier can resolve it. If it is unlocked, confirm that the SIM or eSIM belongs to the intended carrier and that the carrier entered the correct IMEI or model in its activation system.

One-click scans. No signup required.
The eSIM download fails
Confirm that the phone is an eSIM-capable regional version, that the plan includes eSIM, and that the carrier issued a current activation profile. Ask support whether the plan type or imported model is excluded. A physical-SIM tray cannot solve an eSIM-only phone’s problem because the tray is absent by design.
Best Value
Calls work but data or 5G does not
Ask the carrier to check feature provisioning for the IMEI and plan. Recheck the model’s LTE and 5G bands, then verify that 5G, VoLTE and data services are enabled for the account. A successful voice call does not prove that every radio feature is supported.
One line works but Dual SIM does not
Verify that both plans are active, that the phone is unlocked when the carriers differ, and that each carrier supports the required Dual SIM arrangement. Ask which line is selected for cellular data and whether the carrier limits simultaneous services.
The seller cannot provide the model or lock status
Do not treat the phone as verified. Require a readable model identifier, sale region and Carrier Lock status before purchase, and confirm the carrier’s activation policy while a refund or return option still exists.

- Record the exact model number, generation, IMEI and original sale region.
- Confirm Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions, or obtain the original carrier’s documented unlock process.
- Check whether the regional version is eSIM-only or has a nano-SIM tray.
- Confirm that your intended plan supports the phone’s activation method.
- Compare every relevant LTE and 5G band with the destination carrier’s network information.
- Ask the carrier to approve the exact model and IMEI for activation.
- Confirm 5G, VoLTE, hotspot, Wi-Fi Calling, SMS/MMS and roaming if you need them.
- For two lines, verify Dual SIM support for both plans and the phone’s regional hardware.
- Keep the seller’s return period available until activation and essential features have been tested.
What this check can—and cannot—tell you
Completing all four checks gives you a defensible compatibility decision for the stated carrier, country and plan. It does not promise identical coverage everywhere, because coverage depends on the carrier’s local deployment and your location. It also does not make an unsupported feature appear through a software update. If the carrier will not confirm activation for the exact imported model, treat the result as unverified rather than assuming that an unlocked phone will work.
Recheck Apple’s current model and SIM documentation and the carrier’s current activation rules whenever you buy a used or imported iPhone. Models, regional configurations, plans and network policies change; the exact device identity remains the foundation of the decision.
