1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA green run only tells you what the automation platform recorded. It does not prove the workflow reached the right result, or that it reached it exactly once. Reliable monitoring checks three separate things: whether a run happened, whether the platform recorded a failure, and whether the intended business outcome actually occurred.
How an automation can fail while a run looks healthy
“No error” can mean several different things: no exception escaped the workflow, no failure was recorded in the run history, or no alert was triggered. None of those, on its own, confirms that the correct business work was completed.

An exception was handled or suppressed
A workflow can catch an error locally and continue, or suppress an activity fault before it reaches an outer handler. UiPath’s error-handling guide warns that ContinueOnError=True can prevent an enclosing Catch from firing. An empty Catch is another silent-failure risk: the workflow has handled the exception in control-flow terms, but may have discarded the information operators need to act on it. UiPath’s error-handling guidance recommends making failures visible at an appropriate boundary.

The workflow ran, but the result was wrong or missing
A heartbeat or “job completed” notification can show that a workflow reached a reporting point. It cannot establish that a record was written, a count was correct, or a downstream state changed as intended. Silent Fail, for example, describes a distinction between alerts for missed runs and checks against a ledger record; that is the vendor’s description of its service, not independent evidence about how common these failures are. Silent Fail’s service description illustrates why liveness and correctness are separate monitoring questions.
Define the expected business effect explicitly: the record that should exist, the state it should reach, or the count that should reconcile. Then verify it through a check that is meaningfully independent of the workflow’s own success signal.

A visible failure is counted several times
Run histories can also make one underlying fault look like many. Microsoft’s Power Automate admin monitoring documentation explains that dependent actions may be marked failed after an earlier action fails. When investigating a cascade, start with the first failing action rather than treating every later failed mark as a separate root cause. Microsoft’s flow monitoring documentation describes run history and failure monitoring.

Use complementary signals rather than expecting one alert to prove everything. The right mix depends on how quickly the workflow must be detected and whether the result can be checked through a reliable independent source.
| Monitoring approach | What it can establish | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Heartbeat or deadline monitor | The workflow reached a reporting point within an expected window. | That the output is correct or that a business effect landed. |
| Platform run history and failure monitor | The platform’s recorded run state and action-level failure details. | That a downstream record or state is correct, present, or unique. |
| Independent outcome check | Whether an expected record, count, state, or other defined business effect exists. | Correctness if the assertion is unclear or the evidence source is not trustworthy and independent. |
| Retry and recovery controls | Whether configured retryable work is attempted within defined bounds. | That repeated side effects are safe, or that retries will produce the intended outcome. |
Power Automate’s run history and admin monitoring help surface platform-recorded failures; a separate query or reconciliation can check whether the expected result exists. The platform monitoring view and an outcome assertion answer different questions, so use both where the work warrants it.

Retries can recover transient failures, but they can also repeat a write or other side effect. For example, imagine an automation submits a payment request, times out before receiving confirmation, and submits it again on retry. If the first request succeeded, the second submission could create a duplicate. This is an illustrative scenario, not a claim about a particular platform or observed incident.

Assign one owner for retry behavior
Identify whether retries are controlled by the job runner, a queue, an individual action, or the target service. Bound the attempt count and delay, and understand how those layers interact before stacking them. ServiceNow’s Australia release documentation describes RPA Hub auto-retry for Application exceptions, governed by maximum attempts and delay; this is a platform-specific example, not a universal retry rule. ServiceNow’s Australia release documentation is dated March 12, 2026.
Recover to a known state before rerunning
Before repeating work, determine whether the previous attempt partially completed. UiPath’s guidance recommends recovery to a known state and idempotency on writes. A blind restart from the beginning can replay actions that already succeeded. UiPath’s error-handling guide discusses recovery and error handling.

Make writes idempotent where possible
An idempotent operation can be repeated without applying the same mutation more than once. AWS documents idempotency in the specific context of ECS RunTask, describing how it helps ensure an operation mutates resources no more than once. The service context matters, but the engineering principle is useful for automation writes: use a stable operation key or check for an existing result before creating another one. AWS’s ECS idempotency documentation explains the service’s approach.
Check exception classification and work-item state
Retry behavior is not always triggered by every kind of error. SAP’s Business Workflow documentation notes that background work items with errors may be noticed late or not at all without monitoring, and describes repeated execution settings for temporary errors. ServiceNow’s Australia release documentation also notes that an empty exception type can leave an item In progress without incrementing Attempts Count. These are platform-specific behaviors; confirm the applicable release and configuration in your own environment. SAP Business Workflow documentation for version 2025 FPS01 (February 2026) and ServiceNow’s Australia release documentation describe these examples.
Quick Recap
A practical check before trusting a green run
- Define the expected record, state, or count for each important workflow.
- Alert on missed deadlines as well as platform-recorded failures.
- Verify important outcomes through an independent query, reconciliation, or other trustworthy check.
- Inspect suppression settings, local catches, and empty catches; preserve diagnostic context without logging sensitive data.
- Trace cascaded failures from the first failing action.
- Set bounded retries, recover to a known state, and make writes idempotent where possible.
- Test the recovery path, including partial completion and ambiguous timeouts, before relying on automatic retries.
