To check whether an app uses your voice for AI training, identify the exact voice feature and account you use, then inspect the provider’s current privacy notice and data controls. Look separately for audio recordings, transcripts, model improvement, history, human review, retention, and deletion. A microphone permission only controls access to the microphone; it does not show what happens to speech you send to the service.
What to check before changing a setting
Voice dictation, a live AI conversation, an always-available assistant, call transcription, and keyboard voice typing may be governed by different settings—even within one app. Note the feature, device, and account type: personal, school- or work-managed, or API/business. Providers may apply different rules to each.

Then read the current privacy notice and look for terms such as “audio,” “voice recordings,” “transcripts,” “speech recognition,” “model improvement,” “training,” “human review,” “retention,” and “delete.” Establish whether the policy covers raw audio, transcripts, or both.
How to check and limit voice-data use
- Open the service’s data controls. Look for settings named Data Controls, Activity, History, Improve the model, Voice & Audio Activity, Analytics & Improvements, or similar. Read the explanation attached to a toggle before changing it.
- Separate processing from training. A service has to process speech to answer a request. That does not by itself mean it uses the audio to train or improve models. Check whether the setting concerns answering requests, saving activity, model improvement, or more than one of these.
- Check whether audio and transcripts are treated differently. A service may delete audio after transcription but retain text, or may ask separately to use audio clips for improvement.
- Review and delete older activity separately. Turning off a future-saving or training setting may not erase earlier recordings or transcripts, or items already selected for review or improvement. Use the service’s activity history and deletion controls where available.
- Confirm the setting’s scope. Check whether it applies to the feature you use, audio and transcripts, other devices, and your account type. For a managed account, check the administrator’s controls too.
Examples from current provider documentation
These examples show why there is no single “voice training” switch that works the same way everywhere. Provider settings and policies can change; use the linked official pages to confirm the controls for your account and device.

ChatGPT voice
OpenAI says personal Free, Plus, and Pro users can choose to share audio and video clips through Settings → Data Controls by enabling “Improve the model for everyone” and then “Include your audio recordings” or the corresponding video setting. OpenAI says associated voice audio and video clips are not used for training unless users choose to share them. Transcripts and other files from voice conversations may be used when “Improve the model for everyone” is on, depending on plan and settings. Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces cannot share voice clips for training through this control. Standard dictation audio is deleted after transcription unless audio sharing is chosen; Live and Advanced Voice clips are stated to be retained with the transcript for 30 days. OpenAI says deleting a chat deletes associated clips within 30 days, subject to security, safety, legal, or already-disassociated training exceptions. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice help.
Apple Siri and Dictation
Apple Support says the “Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence” or “Improve Siri & Dictation” control is under Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements on iPhone and iPad. Equivalent paths exist for Mac, Watch, HomePod, Apple TV, and Vision Pro; the menu varies by product and operating system, so check the device itself. Apple’s privacy disclosure says opting in permits use of Siri, Dictation, and Translate interactions for improvement; the Siri AI opt-in can also allow data to train Apple foundation models. Apple describes random device-generated identifiers, retention generally up to two years for opted-in data, a reviewed subset that may be held longer, and employee audio review. See Apple Support’s setting instructions and Apple’s privacy disclosure.

Google Assistant
Google’s Web & App Activity controls include “Include voice and audio activity,” which Google says is off unless enabled. Turning it off stops future Assistant recordings from being saved to the Google Account through that setting; it does not delete audio already saved or switch off separate Assistant audio settings. Review and delete earlier activity in My Activity. Google also says audio may be saved after activation, including mistaken wake-word detections, and may be used to improve audio recognition technologies; trained reviewers may review some samples. Google describes separate Keep Activity/history and audio/video improvement choices in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub. With Keep Activity on, chats and certain shared content are saved. Whether audio and Gemini Live recordings are used for service improvement or training depends on a separate choice. Turning off that audio/video improvement choice stops future covered audio and Live recordings from being used to improve services, but Google may still process those inputs to respond and for safety. Google says Gemini activity has an 18-month default auto-delete period, configurable to 3 or 36 months or off; with Keep Activity off, chats may still be retained for up to 72 hours for service, feedback, and safety.

The Federal Trade Commission notes that voice assistants can mishear wake words, send recordings to manufacturer servers, and offer controls for review, deletion, or auto-delete. It advises checking who may listen and securing the account. Its 2023 discussion of Amazon and Ring describes enforcement allegations about retention, deletion, and employee access; those allegations are historical context, not a description of every app’s current settings. See the FTC’s consumer guidance and FTC’s Alexa/Ring discussion.
Re-check after updates
Settings names, feature coverage, and data practices can change. Revisit the provider’s current help and privacy pages after app or operating-system updates, and confirm that a control still covers the specific voice feature and account you use.
