For Exchange Online, use the EWS usage report in the Microsoft 365 admin center to find applications that have made Exchange Web Services (EWS) calls. The report shows registered application IDs, SOAP actions, call volumes and last-activity dates. It is based on weekly aggregated data and can take up to 10 days to reflect activity, so a quiet report is not immediate proof that an integration is unused.
Find the EWS usage report in Microsoft 365
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with an account that can view usage reports.
- Open Reports > Usage, select Exchange, then open the EWS usage tab.
- Choose a reporting period: 7, 30 or 90 days. For an initial inventory, start with 90 days; use a shorter period to focus on more recent activity.
- Review the summary and the Usage details table. Export the report to CSV if you need to sort, filter, search, or share records with application owners.
Microsoft says the report is aggregated weekly, and data may take up to 10 days to appear. Those limits matter when interpreting a newly quiet report: activity can be absent from the displayed period even if the app has made calls recently. Check the report page for the current role prerequisites and interface details.

Interpret the report: which app called what, and when?
The usage details identify the registered app by its Microsoft Entra Application ID and list the SOAP Action, Call Volume and Last Activity date in UTC. The summary reports active apps and average daily call volume; the trend chart uses weekly data points and counts active apps. Use these fields together: the app ID helps identify the caller, the SOAP action shows the operation, and the last-activity date helps establish whether it appears current.

Consider the system’s operating schedule and the report’s aggregation delay before classifying it as unused.

Identify unfamiliar application IDs and find owners
Application IDs may not be recognizable from a display name or the context in which you first encounter them. Compare unfamiliar IDs with Microsoft’s first-party application ID list, and inspect the corresponding Enterprise Applications in Microsoft Entra ID. Keep Microsoft first-party clients in the review: Microsoft’s deprecation guidance says it is removing EWS dependencies from Microsoft products, and the usage report notes that first-party apps are periodically updated.
For each app with activity, identify its internal owner or vendor and document its business purpose, schedule, and SOAP actions. Ask the owner or vendor whether an EWS-free version or migration plan is available. This turns a list of calls into a practical inventory of integrations that need a decision.

Plan a replacement without assuming Graph parity
Microsoft’s published developer recommendation is: “Microsoft Graph is the recommended API to use for accessing Exchange Online data.” Microsoft advises new applications designed to access Exchange Online data to use Graph. However, Graph does not cover every EWS capability, so map the SOAP actions an application actually uses to Microsoft’s EWS-to-Graph mappings and validate each operation before committing to a replacement.

Some capabilities are explicitly not planned for Graph, including generic public-folder CRUD, generic Microsoft 365 Group mailbox CRUD, and legacy Discovery Mailbox access. For those cases, use the alternatives identified in Microsoft’s Exchange Online EWS deprecation guidance or plan another supported approach. The guidance also points administrators toward EWS Analyzer and migration resources for investigating and addressing EWS dependencies.

Do not confuse usage discovery with access controls
Exchange Management Shell can inspect or configure EWS access at organization and mailbox levels, and policies can allow or block application IDs or user agents. These settings answer what is permitted or restricted; they do not replace the usage report as evidence of which applications made calls. Microsoft’s access-control guidance warns that user-agent policies may also affect REST or Graph connections. It also says the behavior of the EWSEnabled parameter changes in October 2026, so consult the current EWS access-control guidance before changing settings.
Scope and Exchange Online timeline
The report and deprecation dates discussed here apply to Exchange Online. The cited Service Manager troubleshooting guidance says on-premises Exchange customers are not affected by the Exchange Online deprecation, but it does not provide a separate on-premises discovery procedure; do not apply the Exchange Online report or schedule to a self-hosted deployment.
