For an Electron app, the strongest alternatives to ElevenLabs to evaluate are OpenAI TTS, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, Microsoft Azure Speech, and PlayHT. There is no evidence here of a universal winner for voice quality or latency: these are hosted APIs, and their documented features are not a substitute for testing in your app. Choose by the voices and locales you need, the controls available, how audio is delivered, integration fit, and current cost.
Which providers are worth shortlisting?
Each service below documents capabilities relevant to app developers, but none of the cited provider documentation establishes a dedicated Electron integration. Plan your own request architecture and check SDK or runtime compatibility for the Electron versions you support.

| Provider | Documented capabilities | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Audio API | OpenAI’s text-to-speech guide describes GPT-4o mini TTS, speech controls such as accent, emotion, intonation, speed, and tone, and streamed audio output. The guide calls GPT-4o mini TTS its newest and most reliable model for intelligent real-time applications. | The guide says voices are currently optimized for English. Its overview says there are 11 built-in voices, while the detailed voice section lists 13; confirm the current voice/model options. The guide also says users must receive clear disclosure that the voice they hear is AI-generated, not human. |
| Google Cloud Text-to-Speech | Google advertises 380+ voices across 75+ languages and variants, along with SSML, pitch, rate and volume controls, audio profiles, multiple formats, and REST and gRPC access. Its documentation describes character-based billing and free monthly allowances for some voice types. | A large catalog does not mean every voice suits your use case. Test the specific locale and voice; check current pricing, quotas, and endpoint region. |
| Microsoft Azure Speech | Azure’s regional REST text-to-speech API supports voice discovery and synthesis, with streaming and non-streaming output formats. | Microsoft says REST use cases are limited and recommends the Speech SDK when possible for richer processing events. Confirm that the SDK packages and runs as expected in your target Electron versions. |
| PlayHT | PlayHT’s API quickstart describes generating a stream for use in an app. | The quickstart is a limited capability signal, not a full integration assessment. Check supported models, SDK maintenance, formats, prices, geographic availability, and terms before adopting it. |
| ElevenLabs (baseline) | ElevenLabs describes nuanced text-to-speech across 32 languages and multiple voice styles in its TTS overview. Its API documentation describes chunked HTTP streaming for supported TTS endpoints. | The overview says higher-quality options are restricted to paid tiers and the voice library is unavailable through the API to free-tier users. Verify current plan access and compare the exact voice and model you would use. |
How should you choose for an Electron app?
Start with voice fit and locale
Play the same representative passage through each candidate, using the language and variant your app needs. Include names, numbers, abbreviations, punctuation, and any phrases that are especially important to your users. Google’s advertised voice count is a vendor capability claim, not evidence that its voices are uniformly suitable; OpenAI’s guide says its voices are optimized for English. Check pronunciation support for the exact voice rather than inferring it from a provider’s overall catalog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMeasure streaming in your own playback path
Streaming can make audio available before synthesis finishes. OpenAI documents chunk-transfer streaming, and ElevenLabs documents chunked HTTP streaming for supported TTS endpoints. Those descriptions do not establish which provider has lower latency. In your Electron app, measure time to first playable audio and test whether your chosen output format can be decoded and played as it arrives.

Compare controls and output formats
OpenAI describes prompting for delivery attributes such as accent, emotion, intonation, speed, and tone. Google documents SSML controls and audio profiles. These are different approaches, so test the control that matters to your product rather than assuming equivalent behavior. Also check codecs, chunking, and any conversion or playback work your app must perform.
Plan integration and credential security
These are hosted developer services accessed through APIs; the cited provider materials do not define a secure Electron architecture. Do not treat an API key embedded in a distributed desktop client as protected. Design a secure request path for your app, and validate authentication, regional endpoints, retries, and SDK/runtime compatibility against the Electron versions you intend to ship.

Check cost, quotas, and terms for the exact usage
Estimate monthly usage against the precise voice and model you plan to deploy. Google describes character-based billing and free monthly allowances for some voice classes; ElevenLabs notes restrictions on certain quality options and API access to its voice library. Rates and entitlements can change, so check each provider’s current pricing, quotas, tier gates, and retention terms rather than comparing a headline price alone.
Run a proof of concept before committing
- Choose representative text. Prepare identical samples with the languages, names, numbers, and punctuation your app actually handles.
- Use comparable voices and settings. Select the relevant locale and voice for each service, then record the controls and output format used.
- Test in the target Electron app. Use the same machine, network, request path, and playback implementation for each provider.
- Record practical results. Compare how the voices fit your use case, time to first playable audio, playback reliability, and implementation effort. Treat this as your app-specific evaluation, not a general benchmark.
- Confirm operating requirements. Recheck current rates, quotas, commercial terms, SDK compatibility, and credential handling before release.
Which one should you try first?
Start with OpenAI if its documented speech controls and streaming match your product, Google if locale breadth and SSML matter most, or Azure if its regional REST options or Speech SDK fit your implementation. PlayHT is another API option, but its cited quickstart alone does not answer broader questions about current models, pricing, and runtime support. Keep ElevenLabs in the same test as your baseline: the available documentation supports comparing capabilities, not declaring a universal winner for sound or speed.
