Update ChromeOS, confirm your Chromebook supports Google Play, then search for the app in the Play Store on that Chromebook. The first check establishes whether the device can run Android apps at all; the second checks whether that particular app is offered for your device. An app that installs may still lack features or behave differently than it does on a phone.
1. Check that your Chromebook supports Android apps
- Connect to the internet and install any available ChromeOS updates.
- Open the time area in the lower-right corner and select Settings.
- Go to Apps > Manage Google Play preferences.
- If the option is available, follow the prompts to set up Google Play. If it is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps. See Google’s Chromebook instructions for installing and using Android apps.
This check is about Android-app support on the Chromebook generally; it does not confirm that any one app will install.

2. Check the specific app in Google Play on the Chromebook
Open the Play Store on the Chromebook, search for the app, and inspect its listing. Google says apps that appear while browsing the Play Store on the Chromebook should work with that device. If the app does not appear, its developer may have excluded Chromebook devices, or the app may not be offered for your device or location. Google explains this check in its Chromebook Play Store download guidance.
3. Understand an incompatibility notice
If the Play Store displays “Your device is not compatible with this version,” Google Play Help says the specific Chromebook model cannot download that app. One possible reason is a required hardware feature the Chromebook lacks; Google gives GPS as an example. Review the developer’s requirements or contact the developer for app-specific details. The notice and possible causes are covered in Google Play Help.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
If you are checking from the Google Play website instead, inspect the device selector. A Chromebook shown in gray for an app cannot install it. Availability can vary with location, screen size, Android version, and the developer’s device targeting, and can change over time. The Chromebook’s own Play Store result is more useful than an older compatibility list. See Google’s app compatibility guidance.
4. Check whether the app will work well after installation
Installability is not the same as a good fit. Check the developer’s requirements and consider whether the app depends on features your Chromebook has. For example, an app may expect touchscreen or stylus input, auto-rotation, a particular display resolution, a persistent internet connection, or a minimum amount of memory. Some functions may work differently on a Chromebook than on an Android phone. Google’s Android app deployment guidelines for Chromebooks discuss these functional considerations.

5. If it is a work or school Chromebook
An administrator can restrict Play Store setup, app downloads, or access to particular apps. If the Play Store option is missing or an app is blocked on a managed Chromebook, ask your workplace or school administrator whether its policy allows the app. Google describes these management controls in its deployment guidance.
