If the Night Hunter is pursuing you, try moving toward a lit area—but treat this as an anecdotal player tip, not a guaranteed way to break pursuit. Use hiding to create a chance to disengage, and coordinate with teammates if you are playing co-op. The exact current rules for how the Night Hunter detects, tracks, or loses players are not established by the official sources cited here.
What to do when the Night Hunter spots you
- Try moving toward light. A player discussion recommends seeking a lit area when the Night Hunter pursues you. That is an individual player tip, not an official counter: light may give you an opportunity to escape, but there is no verified guarantee that it ends pursuit or prevents detection. Read the player discussion.
- Look for a chance to hide. If you can reach a hiding spot safely, use it to try to break contact and regroup. Do not assume that hiding always makes the Night Hunter lose you; the reviewed official notes do not confirm that enemy-specific behavior.
- In co-op, communicate your route and the danger. The game supports cooperative PvE, and Red Barrels describes the format as playable with up to four players. Calling out where the threat is and which route you are taking can help your team make decisions together, but no Night Hunter-specific team tactic is verified here. How hiding upgrades can help
Red Barrels’ March 2024 1.0 notes describe two upgrades relevant to hiding: Invisible prevents enemies from finding a player in a hiding spot even if the player peeks, while Hide and Restore speeds Rig cooldown recovery while the player is hiding. These are general upgrade descriptions. They do not establish that either upgrade is a universal or guaranteed counter to the Night Hunter in every situation. See Red Barrels’ 1.0 notes.

What is not confirmed about the Night Hunter
The official sources reviewed do not establish the Night Hunter’s current detection radius, how long it tracks a player, or the precise condition that makes it stop pursuing. They also do not confirm that the enemy cannot see players in light. Avoid relying on exact distances, timers, spawn conditions, or claims that one action always breaks pursuit.
The Outlast Trials continues to receive updates. Red Barrels’ official update archive lists releases through September 2026 in the retrieved listing, and its Season 7 Project Boneyard notes document changes to the game, including a control change involving X-Ray and Night Vision. That is evidence that details can evolve, not evidence that this particular enemy’s behavior changed in that update.

If a tactic does not work
- Do not repeat a failed light-seeking attempt as though it were a guaranteed mechanic; use the route, hiding opportunities, and build available in that trial.
- Use hiding upgrades for their stated general benefits, while treating any effect on the Night Hunter as unconfirmed unless the game or a current official note says otherwise.
- In a team, share what you observe and adapt together rather than assuming a teammate can draw off or disable the enemy.
