Check the portrait in a consistent order: facial and body anatomy, pose and physical interactions, lighting and texture, then the wider scene. These clues can help you judge whether an image looks coherent, but they cannot prove that it was made by AI—or that it shows a real child or event. For that, you need reliable context or provenance information.
How to inspect the portrait
Look at the whole image first, then inspect details at a comfortable zoom. Assess the same features in the same order each time; one odd detail may be an ordinary photographic or artistic effect, while several unrelated inconsistencies may justify closer scrutiny.

Face and anatomy
Check whether the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and facial proportions fit together naturally. Look for geometry that appears inconsistent across the face, such as features that seem to shift or fail to align. Do not treat an unusual expression, asymmetry, or a single imperfect detail as a verdict.
Body, pose, and contact
If the portrait includes the child’s body, examine proportions, limb lengths, and visible joints. Ask whether the pose could be held comfortably and whether contact with another person or an object makes physical sense. OpenAI’s image-evaluation guidance includes limb and joint stability, body-shape preservation, and physical plausibility as useful image-editing checks; it is general evaluation guidance, not a child-specific detection test (OpenAI Developers’ image evaluation guidance).

Texture, detail, and lighting
Consider whether skin texture and fine details fit the apparent focus and lighting. Look for details that melt, duplicate, or change without a plausible reason. Smooth skin or a polished finish alone does not establish synthetic origin. Compare highlights, shadows, reflections, and areas where one object should block another: they should make sense together and fit the depicted scene.
Subject and scene
Look beyond the face. Check whether clothing details, background objects, and repeated or connected elements remain consistent. Ask whether the child seems to occupy the depicted space, rather than merely looking convincing in isolation. Style and sociocultural plausibility can also affect how an image reads, but they are considerations—not universal rules for identifying an AI image.

How to compare two candidate portraits
Compare them on the same visual axes, and keep appearance separate from evidence about origin.

- Light and texture: consistency of lighting, shadows, reflections, and detail.
- Scene: whether the subject fits the background and interacts plausibly with it.
- Context: what reliable source information or provenance is available.
A portrait can look more coherent than another without being more authentic. Visual plausibility and provenance answer different questions.

What visual clues can—and cannot—establish
A 2024 guide by Kamali, Nakamura, Chatzimparmpas, Hullman, and Groh groups suspected AI-image cues into five categories: anatomical, stylistic, functional, violations of physics, and sociocultural. The authors describe a collection of 138 diffusion-model images, 9 images curated from social media, and 42 real photographs. Those materials are not a universal benchmark of how accurately people can detect AI images. The guide also cautions that perceptible artifacts may not be present and that provenance can be difficult to determine from pixels alone (“How to Distinguish AI-Generated Images from Authentic Photographs,” arXiv, 12 June 2024).
So treat an apparent flaw as a reason to examine an image, not proof of how it was made. The absence of visible errors does not prove authenticity, either. A visual check cannot establish who created the portrait or whether it records a real event.

Check context and provenance separately
Look for reliable information about where the image came from and how it was created, when available. Technical approaches to synthetic-content transparency include authentication and provenance tracking; these address information about origin rather than simply whether pixels look plausible (NIST, “Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content: An Overview of Technical Approaches to Digital Content Transparency”). Missing provenance is not itself proof that an image is AI-generated.

If the portrait depicts an identifiable real child or uses a real child’s likeness, consider consent, privacy, disclosure, and where the image may be shared. On 23 February 2026, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and co-signatories said they were concerned about potential harms to children, including cyber-bullying and exploitation, and called for safeguards, meaningful transparency, accessible removal mechanisms, and enhanced measures for children. The statement notes that legal requirements vary by jurisdiction (joint statement on AI-generated imagery and privacy). UNICEF’s third edition of its Guidance on AI and children, published in December 2025, also addresses AI-generated child sexual abuse material and non-consensual intimate images.

These concerns are separate from whether a portrait looks convincing. A realistic image can still raise privacy or consent issues, and an obviously artificial image can still be harmful to share.
Do not treat a classifier as an authenticity test
OpenAI’s addendum on GPT-4o image generation describes a classifier intended to identify photorealistic children in uploaded images. It says the classifier may occasionally misclassify images, including by flagging younger-looking adults as children, and that ambiguous cases are treated cautiously. This describes one provider’s child-safety system; it is not a general AI-image detector or proof that a portrait is authentic (OpenAI, “Addendum to GPT-4o System Card: Native image generation,” Child Safety section).
