Check for a clear disclosure beside the recommendation, identify who could benefit from it, and compare the suggestion with independent sources. A missing disclosure does not prove a recommendation was paid, and personalization—such as using your searches or reading history—is not the same thing as sponsorship. Bias can also occur without payment, for example when a system repeatedly favors popular titles or underrepresents some authors.
Start with the recommendation’s disclosure
Look directly beside the book suggestion, link, or endorsement for wording such as “sponsored,” “paid promotion,” or a specific relationship—for example, that the recommender received a free or advance copy. A disclosure is more useful when it says what the relationship is and is easy to notice. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises: “The closer the disclosure is to your recommendation, the better.” FTC guidance on endorsements explains that financial relationships can include payment, free or discounted products, and other perks.
“Affiliate link” alone may not make clear to every reader that the recommender can earn money if a purchase follows. Look for a plain-language explanation near the recommendation or link. The FTC guidance applies in the United States; disclosure requirements can differ elsewhere.

Find out who benefits—and what the disclosure does not prove
Consider whether the author, reviewer, publisher, retailer, or recommending service has a financial or other material connection to the book. A free or discounted copy can be relevant even if the recipient says they were free to give an honest opinion. A disclosed connection does not, by itself, show that the recommendation is false; it gives you context for weighing it.
Conversely, no visible disclosure is a reason to seek more information, not proof that the recommendation was sponsored. The relationship may be absent, undisclosed, or simply not apparent from the recommendation. Do not infer payment from placement alone unless the service identifies it as paid.
Separate personalization from paid placement
A recommendation can be tailored to you without being sponsored. Amazon says its shopping experience may use purchase history, reviews you have authored, items saved to Lists, searches, and Alexa shopping conversations. Its description of these inputs explains one way recommendations may be personalized; it does not say that every recommendation based on them is paid. Amazon’s About You explanation also describes controls for viewing and editing some personal details used to shape shopping recommendations.
If a service offers controls for recommendation preferences, changing or reviewing them can help you understand whether your history or interests affect what appears. That is a check on personalization inputs, not a test for sponsorship.

Evaluate the stated reason for the suggestion
Read any explanation the system gives. Does it say the book matches your requested genre, themes, author, reading history, or popularity? Does that reason fit your prompt and preferences? Treat the explanation as a clue to the apparent basis, not independent proof of the system’s internal process.
For a more consistent comparison, give different services the same prompt, including the genre, themes, exclusions, and variety you want. Then compare whether they explain their choices, respect your constraints, include authors and books at different popularity levels, and make sponsored placements clear.
Compare recommendations beyond one service
Check the title in sources with different ownership or incentives, such as independent reviews and book-discovery outlets. Notice whether the recommendation is supported by more than one independent source, and whether those sources explain why the book might suit you. The FTC’s consumer guidance encourages readers to consult varied sources and consider whether reviews are independent or sponsored.
Look at patterns across several suggestions, not just one title. If a system keeps returning bestsellers, books from a narrow group of publishers, or authors from one region after you asked for variety, that may point to a popularity or representation issue. It does not establish that a particular title was paid placement.

What studies can—and cannot—tell you about bias
Recommendation bias is not limited to sponsorship. Research on book datasets has found popularity bias and, in some evaluated algorithms, disproportionate recommendations of books by U.S. authors. These results concern particular historical datasets and evaluated models; they do not establish how a current commercial AI service ranked a specific book or whether every service has the same pattern.
One 2022 study by Daniil, Cuper, Liem, van Ossenbruggen, and Hollink illustrates how dataset composition can matter: American authors accounted for 36% of unique books in the full Book-Crossing dataset and 68.5% after the study’s filtering cutoffs. In the full dataset, 55.3% of ratings were for books by U.S. authors, compared with 74.4% in the filtered Fairbook ratings. Those are statistics about the study’s datasets—not estimates of how often any current recommendation service favors U.S. authors. Popularity is not automatically harmful: a well-known book may genuinely fit a reader’s request. The useful question is whether the results match your stated preferences and offer the range you asked for. A single list cannot diagnose a proprietary system; repeated patterns across comparable prompts are more informative, though still not proof of the system’s internal ranking process.

A 2025 study examined English-language Goodreads reviews and identified some incentive disclosures through terms such as “ARC,” meaning advance reader copy. Its analysis included 7,833,389 reviews at least 50 characters long after preprocessing. In two samples, reviews manually verified as incentivized were identified with an average accuracy of 77.75% when they contained at least one sponsorship keyword.

That accuracy is not the share of Goodreads reviews that were incentivized. The study authors said Goodreads’ dataset did not include an incentive label; their method looked for reviews that disclosed incentives themselves. Searching for disclosure phrases can find some disclosed relationships, but it cannot reveal incentives that reviewers never mention. Read the 2025 study of incentivized Goodreads reviews.

A practical checklist
- Check beside the recommendation for a clear disclosure naming payment, a free or discounted copy, or another relationship.
- Identify who could benefit from your purchase or attention, without assuming that a connection means the opinion is dishonest.
- Distinguish signals of personalization—such as searches, saved lists, or purchase history—from evidence of paid placement.
- Ask whether the stated rationale fits your prompt, genre, themes, and exclusions.
- Compare the book with independent sources and use the same request when comparing multiple recommendation services.
- Watch for repeated patterns in popularity, publishers, or author representation; treat them as possible bias, not proof about one title or a system’s internal workings.
