How to Check Whether Affordable Broadband Is Available at Your Address

The FCC National Broadband Map shows providers reporting service at your address, but you’ll need to confirm installation, full plan costs, and possible Lifeline support directly.

Start with the FCC National Broadband Map: enter your full address to see providers reporting service there, along with their technologies and advertised speeds. The map does not show prices or guarantee that a provider can install service at your exact home or apartment unit, so confirm availability and the full cost directly with each provider before choosing a plan.

1. Search your address on the FCC National Broadband Map

  1. Open the FCC National Broadband Map and enter your complete street address.
  2. If the address does not appear, use the map’s location search and zoom in to select the location point for the property. The FCC map uses points representing structures such as homes, apartment or condo buildings, and small-business buildings. For a multi-unit building, the map result may not establish serviceability at your particular unit.
  3. Review the provider list, connection technology, and advertised download and upload speeds shown for the location.

The map reports availability submitted by providers. The FCC also updates it through verification, changes to location data, and public input. Its speeds are advertised figures, not measured speed tests or a guarantee of the performance your household will receive.

2. Confirm availability and compare the real cost

The FCC says the National Broadband Map shows internet availability, not network performance, affordability, or adoption. Treat a listing as a lead to verify, not a final quote or installation confirmation. Contact each provider and ask whether it can serve your exact address—and, in a multi-unit building, your specific apartment or condo unit.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Monthly price: What is the recurring price after any introductory promotion ends, and how long does the promotional price last?
  • One-time charges: Are there installation, activation, or equipment fees?
  • Equipment: Is a modem or router included, rented, or required separately?
  • Data: Is there a monthly data limit, and what happens if you exceed it?
  • Commitment: Is a contract required? What are the cancellation terms or early-termination charges?
  • Service details: Which technology and advertised download and upload speeds apply to the plan available at your address?

Compare the ongoing price as well as the initial promotion, and weigh it against the fees, data allowance, speed tier, and contract conditions. The map does not supply these price and plan terms, so the provider’s current offer is the information to use for your budget.

3. Challenge a listing that appears inaccurate

If the map says a provider serves your location but the provider tells you it cannot, or you believe another availability detail is wrong, you can submit an availability challenge through the FCC map. The FCC accepts challenges from consumers and other stakeholders; consult its availability challenge guidance for the process.

4. Check whether Lifeline can lower your bill

Lifeline is a federal benefit that may help eligible consumers pay for phone or internet service. USAC’s current overview lists support of up to $9.25 per month, with enhanced support of up to $34.25 per month for eligible residents of Tribal lands. These are maximum benefit amounts, not a promise that every provider or plan will apply the full amount to a particular bill.

Who may qualify

Under USAC’s 2026 eligibility rules, you may qualify if your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or if you or a qualifying household member participates in an eligible program. Examples include SNAP, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance, or Veterans Pension benefits. The income limits vary by household size and geography; check the current USAC eligibility table for the amount that applies to you. USAC allows only one Lifeline benefit per household.

How to apply and use the benefit

  1. Apply through the Lifeline National Verifier or by mail, following USAC’s National Verifier instructions.
  2. If automated checks cannot verify your eligibility, submit the documentation requested for review.
  3. Once approved, contact a participating service provider to enroll in a Lifeline-supported service. Approval does not itself select or activate an internet plan.

USAC also publishes minimum service standards for providers receiving Lifeline support. Its fixed-broadband standard includes 25/3 Mbps and a 1,280 GB usage allowance; these are program standards for provider reimbursement, not a guarantee that every eligible person can purchase a plan with those terms at their address.

ACP is no longer accepting applications

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024, because Congress did not provide additional funding. Do not count on ACP as an available discount; check Lifeline eligibility and current offers from providers serving your address instead.
