If you want an Animal Crossing-style routine, try Cozy Grove or Hello Kitty Island Adventure; if you want farming and friendships, choose Stardew Valley or Fae Farm. For a more story-led, spirit-filled world, consider Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition—but expect themes of death and goodbye. These games share cozy moods or familiar activities, not an official connection to Studio Ghibli.
Choose by the activity you want
“Cozy” describes several different kinds of play. Some games center on decorating and daily routines; others emphasize farming, crafting, puzzles, or exploration. Use the core loop—not just a soft art style—to find the closest fit.

| Game | Best for | What you do | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cozy Grove | Island exploration and helping spirits | Explore an ever-changing haunted island, craft, and help local ghosts. | Spirit-centered and gently haunted rather than a straightforward neighborhood life sim. |
| Hello Kitty Island Adventure | Island friendship and gift-making | Bake, cook, and craft gifts to become best friends with Sanrio characters. | Its friendship-and-crafting focus is a better match than farming if you want social island play. |
| Stardew Valley | Farming, home improvement, and relationships | Turn overgrown fields into a thriving home and build relationships with locals. | Farming is central, not an optional side activity. |
| Fae Farm | Magical homesteading with company | Build a magical homestead and meet characters. | Nintendo’s January 2026 roundup says it can be played solo or with up to three other players. |
| Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition | Story-led management and spirit themes | Build and explore a boat, care for spirits, and help them move on. | It addresses death and loss, so its emotional tone is heavier than a decorating-focused sim. |
| Winter Burrow | Whimsical woodland exploration | As a mouse, restore a childhood burrow, search for a missing aunt, bake pies, and rest by the fireplace. | A woodland home-and-story premise rather than an island community routine. |
| Tiny Bookshop | Gentle tasks and local community | Open a bookshop by the sea and recommend books to locals. | A low-pressure narrative management game, not an island-decorating life sim. |
| A Little to the Left | Satisfying organization puzzles | Arrange household objects and solve puzzles around a mischievous cat. | Puzzle-focused; choose it for tidy arrangements rather than a life-sim routine. |

Cozy Grove: explore an island and help its ghosts
Cozy Grove is the clearest pick here for a gentle island setting with an unusual, spirit-centered twist. Nintendo describes an ever-changing haunted island where you explore, craft, and help soothe local ghosts. Choose it if the appeal is wandering around, doing helpful tasks, and seeing the island change—not if you specifically want a direct copy of Animal Crossing’s neighborhood life.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure: make gifts and build friendships
In Hello Kitty Island Adventure, the social loop is explicit: bake, cook, and craft gifts to become best friends with Sanrio characters. It fits players who want a cheerful island setting and character relationships, with gift-making as a reason to keep crafting.
If you want farming and relationships
Stardew Valley: a strong match, provided you like farming
Stardew Valley brings together home improvement, repeatable activities, and relationships with a local community. Nintendo’s description frames the goal as turning overgrown fields into a thriving home and winning the hearts of locals. The key caveat is that farming is the foundation of the experience; it is not the best recommendation for someone specifically looking for a cozy game without farming.
Fae Farm: magical homesteading, solo or multiplayer
Fae Farm combines a magical homestead with meeting characters. Nintendo’s January 2026 roundup says it supports solo play or play with up to three other players. That makes it the farming-adjacent choice in this list for someone who wants a fantasy setting and the option to share play; the roundup does not specify further multiplayer details.

If you want a whimsical or spirit-centered story
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition: cozy activities with emotional weight
Nintendo’s publisher-provided description calls Spiritfarer “a cozy management game about dying.” You build and explore a boat, befriend and care for spirits, then help them move on. Farming, mining, fishing, harvesting, cooking, and crafting are part of the activity mix, but the story’s focus on death, grief, and farewells makes this a more emotionally weighty choice than a simple home-decorating game.
The Nintendo Switch product page lists the release date as August 18, 2020, and says that edition supports handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. It lists one player with optional two-player cooperative play. The Farewell Edition brings together the base game and additional content; Nintendo says the base game was “beloved by over 1 million players,” a publisher-reported figure with no year displayed on the page.
Winter Burrow: restore a woodland home
Winter Burrow trades a village or island for a woodland burrow. Its mouse protagonist restores a childhood home, looks for a missing aunt, bakes pies, and rests by the fireplace. Nintendo included it in its January 2026 cozy roundup; the appeal is its small-scale, storybook home-and-exploration premise.

It is a narrative management alternative for readers drawn more to friendly encounters and low-pressure work than to farming or decorating.

A Little to the Left: organize instead of building a routine
A Little to the Left turns household objects into arrangement puzzles, with a mischievous cat complicating the task. Nintendo describes it as organizing objects and solving arrangements. Pick it when the satisfying part is making things neat; it is not a substitute for social routines, farming, or exploration.
What “like Studio Ghibli” means—and what it does not
Readers often use “Ghibli-like” to describe cute imagery, magic, pastoral closeness to nature, and worlds that feel gentle rather than threatening. A 2025 academic article on cozy games discusses those qualities and identifies spirit-centered games such as Cozy Grove and Spiritfarer as drawing on themes associated with Spirited Away and Japanese folklore. That is a comparison of mood and themes, not evidence of Studio Ghibli authorship, endorsement, or licensing. None of the descriptions here should be read as claiming an official studio connection.
The same study cautions against treating cozy as synonymous with cheerful: sadness and loss can be part of the genre. That distinction matters most for Spiritfarer, whose management activities sit alongside a story about farewells.
