How to Check Whether a Windows App Runs Natively or Through Emulation on an ARM Laptop

Task Manager can show whether a Windows app is running as native ARM64, emulated x86/x64, or an Arm64EC hybrid. Follow the exact steps and learn why drivers and helper processes matter.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Windows on Arm laptop, the quickest check is built into Task Manager: open Details, enable the Architecture column, and read the row for the app’s running process. ARM64 means that process is native Arm64. x86 or x64 means Windows is running it through emulation. ARM64 (x64 compatible) identifies an Arm64EC-compatible process that can combine native Arm64EC code with emulated x64 code, so it is not safe to call every part of that process native.

This distinction answers “is this app x64 or ARM64?” more reliably than an installer label, a Store listing, or the fact that the program opens. For a complete compatibility diagnosis, inspect the app’s helpers and plug-ins as well, then check whether any required peripheral has an Arm64 driver.

Check the running process in Task Manager

The Architecture value describes the process that is currently running, not merely the installer or product name. Use these steps on a Windows laptop with an Arm-based processor:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start the application you want to check. Leave it open so its process appears in Task Manager. If the application has a sign-in window, document window, or separate tool, open the part that uses the feature you are testing.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. You can also right-click the taskbar and choose Task Manager, depending on your Windows build.
  3. Select the Details tab. This view lists individual executable processes rather than only grouped application names.
  4. Locate the app’s process. Look for the main executable, and note that the app may also have helper, updater, plug-in, or service processes with different names. If several rows look related, record each one instead of choosing only the first match.
  5. If Architecture is not already a column, right-click a column heading in the Details view, choose the command for selecting or managing columns, and enable Architecture. The exact wording of that menu can vary between Windows builds.
  6. Read the Architecture entry for each relevant process. You can leave Task Manager open while reproducing a failure so that you can identify a renderer, plug-in host, or helper that starts only when a particular feature is used.
Task Manager label What it means on Windows on Arm How to describe it accurately
ARM64 The process is built for the Arm64 instruction set and runs natively on the Arm processor. Native Arm64 process.
x86 The process uses 32-bit x86 instructions and is handled by Windows on Arm emulation. Emulated x86 process.
x64 The process uses 64-bit x86-64 instructions and is handled by Windows on Arm emulation. Emulated x64 process.
ARM64 (x64 compatible) The process is compatible with Arm64EC. Native Arm64EC portions can run directly, while x64 portions in the same process run through emulation. Hybrid Arm64EC-compatible process; do not assume every code path is native.

Task Manager is the most useful built-in answer to questions such as “does this Windows app run natively on ARM?” and “how do I check whether an app is emulated on Windows on Arm?” It reports the architecture Windows is presenting for a live process, which is more meaningful than guessing from an app’s branding or installer.

Interpret the result without overclaiming

ARM64 means the process is native, not necessarily the whole app

An ARM64 row confirms that particular process is executing Arm64 code natively. It does not certify every executable associated with the product. An application can still launch additional executables, load plug-ins, or communicate with services that have different architectures. Check those related rows if you are diagnosing performance, a plug-in failure, or a hardware feature.

For example, the visible interface could be an ARM64 process while an older extension runs in a separate x64 process. In that situation, calling the interface native is accurate; calling every component native is not. Record the process name alongside its label when reporting an issue to the publisher.

x86 and x64 mean emulation for user-mode apps

Windows on Arm can run compatible user-mode x86 and x64 software through emulation. Seeing either label therefore establishes that the listed process is not a native Arm64 process. The label does not by itself tell you how fast the application will feel: workload, graphics use, plug-ins, memory behavior, and the specific Windows build and laptop all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emulation is also not a failure report. An x64 process may be entirely usable if its required features and extensions work. The useful conclusion is simply that Windows is translating that process’s instruction set rather than executing it as Arm64 code. If a native Arm64 release exists, compare its feature and plug-in support rather than switching solely because the other process is emulated.

ARM64 (x64 compatible) is a mixed execution model

Microsoft’s Arm64EC design allows an application to move to Arm incrementally. Arm64EC code follows the Arm64 application binary interface and executes natively; x64 modules can coexist in the process and are emulated. Task Manager’s “ARM64 (x64 compatible)” wording signals that compatibility model. Treat it as evidence of a hybrid process, not as a promise that all extensions, libraries, or plug-ins are native.

This is why a simple native-versus-emulated binary answer can be misleading for a modern application. An Arm64EC-compatible process may contain a native portion that hosts an older x64 component. When troubleshooting, identify which module or helper performs the failing operation, and ask the publisher whether that component has been rebuilt for Arm64EC or Arm64.

Check every process an application relies on

A single app entry in the Processes tab can represent several executables. For a meaningful diagnosis, repeat the Architecture check for:

  • The main application executable.
  • Plug-in hosts and extension processes.
  • Background helpers, update services, and crash reporters.
  • Separate rendering, sandbox, or content processes.
  • Any process supplied by a peripheral or other integration.

Mixed results are normal. For example, a native ARM64 front end may start an x64 helper, or an Arm64EC application may load an x64 plug-in. Report the architecture of the specific process that exhibits the problem rather than assigning one label to the entire product.

Some helpers appear only after you open a document, enable an extension, start a call, or connect a device. If you inspect Task Manager immediately after launch, you may miss them. Keep Details visible, reproduce the action, and then check newly appearing rows. This process-level check is especially useful when the main window is responsive but one function crashes or fails.

Architecture is only one compatibility test

A process can start successfully and still lack a feature. Native execution, emulation support, plug-in compatibility, and driver support are separate questions. Use the Architecture column to identify execution mode, then investigate the dependencies needed for the task you actually care about.

Drivers are different from ordinary app code

Windows on Arm emulation covers user-mode x86 and x64 code. It does not translate kernel-mode drivers. A device driver must be compiled for Arm64, so an application that depends on an unsupported driver can fail, lose a feature, or work only as a basic device even when its visible process is ARM64 or successfully emulated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application’s publisher and the hardware maker when the software controls a scanner, audio interface, security device, printer, capture card, specialized input device, or another peripheral. Ask specifically whether the required driver supports your Arm-based Windows edition and current build. The app’s architecture label cannot answer that driver question.

Successful launch is not proof of native execution

An app’s name, installer type, Microsoft Store availability, or ability to open does not establish its architecture. Use the live process label instead. Microsoft describes rebuilt Arm applications as offering the preferred experience, while compatible x86 and x64 applications can run through emulation; those are platform-level statements, not a performance guarantee for an individual program.

Likewise, an app advertised as “compatible with Windows on Arm” may be an emulated x86 or x64 build. Compatibility means it can run under the supported model; it does not necessarily mean the publisher ships an Arm64 executable. Confirm the architecture of the version installed on your laptop.

What Windows 11 version 24H2 changes

Windows 11 version 24H2 on Arm PCs includes Prism, Microsoft’s emulation technology intended to improve the performance of emulated applications. Prism does not convert an x86 or x64 process into ARM64, and its inclusion is not a benchmark for a particular app, game, plug-in, laptop, or workload. Continue to use Task Manager’s Architecture column to identify what is actually running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, an x64 label remains an x64 label after an update to a system that includes Prism. The update can affect how that emulated process performs, but it does not change the architecture classification or remove the need to verify drivers and plug-ins.

Use publisher information to confirm support

Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ lists native Arm64 versions of several widely used applications, including Microsoft 365 apps such as Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote. The same published examples include Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve. This is an illustrative list rather than a permanent catalog; app versions change, so confirm the current release with the publisher.

A publisher may offer different installers or editions, and a launcher can select a different executable from the one you expected. Verify the process after installation rather than assuming every edition shares the same architecture. Also check the support status of required add-ins, codecs, scripts, or plug-ins; a native main program may still depend on an older component.

For games and specialist software, consult the publisher’s current system requirements. Microsoft’s FAQ also points to Works on WoA, a third-party open-source compatibility listing to which Microsoft contributes data. It can help identify leads, but it should not replace the publisher’s requirements or a check of your exact version and device.

Inspect an executable when Task Manager is not enough

Task Manager tells you about a running process. Developers or advanced users may instead need to inspect an executable image before launching it, or investigate why a mixed binary received an unexpected label. Microsoft’s Arm64EC documentation describes a developer-command-prompt workflow using the Visual Studio linker utility:

link /dump /headers pathtoapp.exe

Replace the path with the executable you want to examine. Review the machine-header information in the output. Arm64EC and ARM64X binaries require careful interpretation because a mixed image can contain components intended for different execution modes. This command is a diagnostic aid for developers, not a simpler alternative to Task Manager for ordinary users.

The command must be run from an environment that provides the link utility, such as a developer command prompt. If you do not normally use Visual Studio build tools, Task Manager is the safer and faster method for answering the everyday question “is this app running natively?”

Inspecting the file on disk also has limits. The executable may load DLLs, plug-ins, or helper programs with other architectures, and the file you inspected may not be the file Windows actually launches after an updater or launcher selects a different build. For that reason, pair binary inspection with a live-process check when troubleshooting a real installation.

A practical troubleshooting workflow

  1. Reproduce the issue. Start the app and perform the action that fails or feels slow. Note whether the problem appears only after opening a particular file, extension, or peripheral.
  2. Record the main process architecture. In Details, note whether it is ARM64, x86, x64, or ARM64 (x64 compatible).
  3. Inspect related processes. Look for a plug-in host, renderer, helper, or service that has a different label. Repeat the check after triggering the failing feature.
  4. Check the dependency. Determine whether the failing feature needs a kernel-mode driver, a device-specific component, or a plug-in that has its own architecture requirement.
  5. Verify support for your build. Check the publisher’s Arm64 or Windows-on-Arm documentation and your hardware maker’s driver page.
  6. Retest after updating. An app publisher may replace an emulated build with an Arm64 build, or update a plug-in or driver independently of the main application.

If the main process is x64 but a native Arm64 release is available, compare the supported features and plug-ins before switching. If the main process is ARM64 and a feature still fails, focus on its helper process, plug-in, or driver rather than assuming the app’s architecture is the cause.

How to compare two versions or editions

When deciding whether an Arm-native release is preferable to an emulated release, compare the same four dimensions for each version:

Comparison question Evidence to collect
What runs natively? Architecture label for the main process and any important helpers: ARM64, x86/x64, or ARM64 (x64 compatible).
Will extensions work? Architecture and support status of required plug-ins, add-ins, codecs, scripts, and helper processes.
Will hardware features work? Arm64 availability for every required kernel-mode driver and peripheral component.
Does it meet your needs? Publisher-stated feature support and behavior on your exact Windows build and laptop.

Do not rank the versions from architecture alone. Native Arm64 removes the instruction-set translation step, but the sources do not establish a universal speed difference for a particular application. A well-supported emulated app can be more useful than a native build that lacks a plug-in or driver, while an Arm64 build may reduce compatibility friction for a workload that runs continuously.

Use the same workload when comparing versions: open the same files, invoke the same extension, and connect the same device. This does not turn the architecture label into a benchmark; it simply prevents a feature or dependency difference from being mistaken for an instruction-set effect.

Common mistakes

  • Checking the wrong tab: The simplified Processes view may hide individual executables. Use Details.
  • Assuming “ARM64 compatible” means fully native: The x64-compatible label can describe a hybrid Arm64EC process.
  • Checking only the window you can see: A helper or plug-in process may be the component using emulation or failing.
  • Confusing emulation with driver translation: User-mode x86/x64 emulation does not make an incompatible kernel driver work.
  • Treating a compatibility list as a guarantee: Verify the current publisher release, plug-ins, drivers, and Windows build.
  • Using architecture as a benchmark: The label identifies execution mode, not an independent measurement of responsiveness or battery life.
  • Inspecting only the installer: A launcher or updater may select another executable when the app actually runs.
  • Assuming one process represents the product: Different components can legitimately have different architecture labels.

The short answer to the key labels

On an Arm-based Windows laptop, open Task Manager, choose Details, and enable Architecture. ARM64 is native Arm64; x86 and x64 are emulated user-mode processes; ARM64 (x64 compatible) is a hybrid Arm64EC-compatible process that can execute some code natively and other code through x64 emulation. Then check the app’s helpers, plug-ins, and drivers before concluding that the entire application is native or fully compatible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check whether an app is emulated on Windows on Arm?

Launch it, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Details, enable the Architecture column if needed, and read the app’s process row. x86 or x64 indicates emulation; ARM64 indicates native Arm64 execution.

What does ARM64 (x64 compatible) mean?

It identifies an Arm64EC-compatible process. Arm64EC portions can run natively, while x64 code in the same process runs through emulation. It is a hybrid label, not proof that every component is native.

Does an ARM64 process prove the whole application is native?

No. The app can start separate x86, x64, or Arm64EC helpers, plug-in hosts, services, or extensions. Inspect the related process rows when the exact component matters.

Can an emulated app work with my printer or other device?

The app may run, but its required kernel-mode driver must be compiled for Arm64. Windows on Arm emulation does not translate kernel drivers, so check the app publisher and hardware maker.

Does Windows 11 24H2 make an x64 app ARM64?

No. Windows 11 version 24H2 on Arm PCs includes Prism to improve emulated-app performance, but an x64 process remains an emulated x64 process.

Is a native Arm64 build always faster?

The architecture label alone is not a benchmark. Compare the exact workload, plug-ins, drivers, features, Windows build, and laptop; a native release can still lack a dependency that an emulated release supports.

Can I check an executable before launching it?

Advanced users can use a developer command prompt and run link /dump /headers pathtoapp.exe. ARM64EC and ARM64X output requires careful interpretation, and loaded helpers may still have different architectures.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I check games and specialist software?

Check the publisher’s current requirements. Works on WoA is a third-party open-source compatibility listing that can provide leads, but it is not a substitute for the publisher’s information or testing your exact setup.

The Bottom Line

Use Task Manager’s Details → Architecture column while the app is running. ARM64 is native, x86 and x64 are emulated, and ARM64 (x64 compatible) denotes a mixed Arm64EC process. Inspect helpers and plug-ins, and verify Arm64 drivers for every peripheral before judging compatibility or performance.
