A crash that begins after a Windows 11 update is a reason to investigate, not proof the update caused it. Check the installation date, record exactly what fails, and compare the symptoms and affected device with Microsoft’s notes for that Windows version. Try a matching fix before considering an update rollback.
Check which updates were installed and when
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Find updates installed near the date the crash began. Note the update name or KB number and its installation date. Microsoft says Update history lists what was installed and when: Windows Update FAQ.
Use the timing to identify which release notes to check. Windows feature updates are typically annual, while quality updates arrive more frequently and mainly include smaller fixes and security updates, according to Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ. The history is a timeline, not a diagnosis: an update appearing before the first crash does not by itself establish cause.

Write down what actually happens
Before changing Windows, capture the details that will let you compare your case with a documented issue:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The game or app name and the date the problem first occurred.
- The exact error text, if any, and whether the app freezes, closes, or fails to launch.
- Whether the whole PC restarts or only the app fails.
- Your Windows version and the relevant update’s KB number.
- Your device type and, where relevant, whether it uses an ARM processor.
- Whether other apps are affected.
Compare your symptoms with Microsoft’s issue notes
Open Microsoft’s release notes for the relevant Windows version and update. Microsoft’s release-history pages point readers to Windows release health for current known-issue information; start with the applicable Windows release health page and check the update’s own support note. Match more than the date: compare the specific behavior, error, Windows build or KB, affected app, and device scope. Issue notes can change as mitigations and fixes are issued, so check their current status rather than assuming an older report is still unresolved.

Example: games, RGB-related drivers, and KB5121003
Microsoft’s August 11, 2026 notes for Windows 11 update KB5121003 reported that some games could become unresponsive after installation. Symptoms included a game closing without notice, the error EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, or the device restarting. Microsoft associated the issue with certain RGB-lighting peripherals or internal components whose software installed drivers with filenames similar to inpoutx64. The named games were ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and THE FINALS. See Microsoft’s KB5121003 support page.
Microsoft said its mitigation blocks the inpoutx64 driver from loading on affected devices. It described the fix as applying automatically to consumer and business devices not managed by IT; enterprise-managed devices require administrator action. The report also asked affected users to send a report through Feedback Hub, opened with Windows logo key + F. Because the note is dated and version-specific, verify that it still applies to your build and device before treating it as an unresolved problem.

Example: Teams or new Outlook on some ARM devices
Microsoft documented a separate issue after security updates released on or after August 11, 2026: Teams and the new Outlook for Windows could fail to launch or close unexpectedly on some ARM devices, including Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7. The problem was most likely on new or freshly imaged PCs that had not received Microsoft Store updates. Microsoft’s support note advised updating the Auto Super Resolution Package through Microsoft Store; it said Windows updates released on and after September 8, 2026 resolved the issue. This is a reminder to check the app, device architecture, and available component updates before removing a Windows update.
Try a matching fix before uninstalling an update
If Microsoft describes your exact symptom and device, follow the documented workaround or install the later fix that applies to your Windows version. An app or component update may resolve the issue without removing a security update. Check that the guidance covers your build and device type; a similar-looking error alone is not enough to assume the same cause.

Uninstall an update only when the evidence supports it
If a matching official workaround or later fix is unavailable and the timing and symptoms strongly align, Windows provides an uninstall option. Microsoft warns that some updates cannot be removed and that users should understand the security risks before uninstalling a security update.
- In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- Find the relevant update in the installed-updates list and select Uninstall, if available.
If Windows will not boot normally, Microsoft documents using Windows Recovery Environment: select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Follow Microsoft’s update removal guidance.

How to judge the result
Build your conclusion from the evidence rather than chronology alone. The case for an update-related problem is stronger when the first crash follows the installation, Microsoft describes the same behavior on the same Windows version and device type, and a published mitigation or fix addresses it. If those details do not line up, the update history cannot identify the cause; keep the conclusion open rather than removing an update on timing alone.
