To check whether a website is safe before visiting it, inspect the real domain, heed browser warnings, and verify unexpected requests through a known-good route. HTTPS and reputation lookups can add useful information, but neither proves that a site is trustworthy. If you are asking, “How can I check whether a website is safe before visiting it?”, use the steps below before entering a password, payment detail, or other sensitive information.
Check the link before opening it
- Pause and inspect the destination. If possible, copy the link or preview its destination without opening it. Avoid clicking simply because a message looks familiar or urgent.
- Read the domain carefully. Look for misspellings, extra words, or a domain that does not match the organization named in the message. A familiar logo or page design is not proof: phishing pages may imitate legitimate services. Google Search Central recommends checking the address bar to confirm the URL is correct: Social Engineering (Phishing and Deceptive Sites).
- Use a known-good route for important accounts. If a message asks you to update payment details or sign in, open the official site using a saved bookmark or an address you already know. You can also contact the organization using a phone number from a trusted source—not one supplied in the suspicious message. The FTC recommends independently verifying unexpected requests: How To Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams.
What browser warnings mean
If your browser displays a full-page danger warning, stop. Chrome warnings can identify risks including phishing, malware, unwanted software, and social engineering. Leave the page rather than bypassing the warning or entering information. Google describes these warnings and advises users not to visit dangerous pages in Manage warnings about unsafe sites.

A warning means the site has been flagged as potentially dangerous; it is not a statement of perfect certainty about every URL. Google’s Safe Browsing guidance explains the scope and limits of its warnings: Appropriate Usage | Google Safe Browsing.

Do not click through a certificate or privacy error either. Such an error can involve the site, your network, or your device, and it does not establish that continuing is safe. Chrome’s guidance on connection symbols and errors is in Check if a site’s connection is secure.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What HTTPS can—and cannot—tell you
HTTPS and a valid certificate indicate that the connection is encrypted and authenticated to the domain shown in the browser. That helps protect information while it travels between your browser and that domain. It does not establish that the site operator is honest. A scammer’s site can use encryption too, meaning information may be encrypted on its way to the scammer and still reach them. The FTC makes this distinction in Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know.
So, treat a non-secure connection as unsuitable for passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information, but do not treat HTTPS or a lock icon as a trust badge. Check that the domain is the one you intended to visit, even when the connection is marked secure.

- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Use a reputation lookup as an extra signal
You can check a destination with Google’s Safe Browsing site-status tool. A result identifying a risk is a reason to stop. A clean result means only that the tool did not report a known issue for the address at the time you checked; it is not a certification that the site is safe now or will remain safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGoogle’s technical guidance covers URLs shown in a browser’s address bar, not every embedded resource—such as scripts or images—that a page may load. A reputation lookup therefore cannot account for everything that happens on a site. Avoid pasting sensitive, private URLs containing personal tokens into unrelated third-party scanners; their privacy practices are not established here.

Watch for pressure and implausible offers
Urgency is a reason to slow down, not a reason to skip checks. Be cautious of messages demanding immediate action, unexpected requests to update payment details, or offers at unusually low prices. Verify the claim independently through the company’s known website or contact channel. A quick decision checklist
- Unexpected or mismatched domain: Do not sign in or pay. Navigate independently to the organization’s known site.
- Full-page danger warning or certificate error: Do not proceed or enter information.
- HTTPS but an unfamiliar domain: The connection may be encrypted, but the site’s identity or honesty is not established. Verify the domain independently.
- Clean reputation result: Treat it as one limited check, not a guarantee; continue to inspect the address and the request.
- Urgent payment or account request: Contact the organization using details from a source you already trust.
