How to Check Whether a Website Is Legitimate Before Following Its Instructions

Before signing in, paying, downloading, or sharing personal details, verify the full domain and confirm unexpected requests through a trusted, independent channel. HTTPS and a polished page are not proof that a site is genuine.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you sign in, pay, download a file, or share personal information, check that the website’s full domain belongs to the organization you meant to reach and verify the request through a separate, trusted channel. A padlock, HTTPS, familiar logo, or polished design does not prove the site is genuine. If your browser shows a dangerous-site warning, leave the page and do not enter information.

Use this quick check before doing anything on the page

Pause before following instructions from a site you reached through an unexpected email, text, pop-up, advertisement, or social post. Do not enter credentials, payment details, or other sensitive information while you work out whether the request is real.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Read the entire domain in the address bar. Compare it with the organization’s official domain, not just the name or logo shown on the page.
  2. Check for a browser warning. If the browser labels the page dangerous, leave it. Do not bypass the warning to continue.
  3. Verify the request independently. Navigate to the organization’s known official website yourself or call a number from a trusted source you already have. Do not use the suspicious message’s link or contact details to verify its own claim.
  4. Ask whether the request makes sense. Urgency, threats, unusually low prices, or an unexpected request for a password, payment, or personal information are reasons to stop and check.
  5. Proceed only when the organization and the specific request are independently confirmed. HTTPS can protect the connection, but it cannot establish either of those facts.

This is a practical risk check, not a way to certify every website. No single visual clue can guarantee that a page is legitimate.

Check the domain, not just the page design

The domain is the part of the web address that identifies the site you are connecting to. Read the address bar carefully and compare the domain with the one the organization uses on its independently verified website or in trusted materials. A convincing logo, familiar colors, or a page that looks like a company’s sign-in screen can be copied; appearance does not establish who controls the site.

Look for small changes that change the destination

  • Misspellings: A character may be substituted, repeated, or left out. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) specifically advises checking for misspellings and incorrect domains.
  • Extra words or characters: A name that looks familiar at a glance may have an added term, hyphen, or other change. Compare the actual domain rather than relying on the brand name appearing somewhere in the address.
  • Misleading subdomains: A familiar organization’s name can appear at the start of an address even when the domain belongs to someone else. Read through to the domain ending and identify the organization’s actual domain, rather than stopping at the first familiar word.
  • A different domain ending: An address can use a different ending from the organization’s known site. Treat that difference as something to verify, not as proof by itself that the page is fraudulent.

Do not assume a page is genuine because the address includes the organization’s name, the browser displays a lock, or the site uses HTTPS. The FBI IC3’s June 10, 2019 public service announcement warns that phishing sites can use website certificates and says not to trust a site just because it has a lock icon or “https” in the address bar.

Compare with a source you reached independently

If you are unsure what the official domain is, do not resolve that uncertainty by clicking another link in the same message. Use a website address you have saved from a previous legitimate interaction, an official app you already use, or contact information from a trusted record. The FTC’s current consumer guidance, checked October 10, 2026, recommends contacting a company through a phone number or website you already know is real when a suspicious message claims to come from it.

Read the whole address, not just the portion that catches your eye first. A brand name can be embedded in a longer address, appear in a subdomain, or sit beside extra characters. What matters is whether the domain itself matches the independently established address for the organization. If you cannot confidently identify that match, treat it as unresolved and do not sign in or pay while you investigate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand what HTTPS and the padlock do—and do not—tell you

HTTPS and a valid site certificate indicate that the browser’s connection to the domain is encrypted. Google Chrome Help explains that certificates encrypt the connection between the browser and the site. This protects the connection from being read or altered in transit in the way an unencrypted connection could be.

Encryption does not tell you whether the domain is operated by the organization you intended to visit, whether the page’s instructions are honest, or whether the site will handle information responsibly. A phishing site can also use HTTPS and show a lock icon. The FBI IC3 explicitly cautioned about this in its June 10, 2019 PSA.

Think of HTTPS as one narrow check: it concerns the connection to the address displayed. Domain identity, the reason for the request, and independent confirmation are separate questions. A secure connection to the wrong site is still a connection to the wrong site.

That distinction matters most when you are about to submit something valuable. A lock icon cannot confirm that an account warning came from your bank, that a payment page belongs to the seller you intended, or that a download is necessary. It only addresses the connection between your browser and the site at the displayed address. Check the address and the request separately, even when the connection is encrypted.

Evaluate why the page is asking you to act

Phishing commonly works by impersonating a familiar organization and prompting a click or disclosure. CISA’s Secure Our World guidance describes phishing as a way to trick people into opening harmful attachments or sharing personal information. A message can direct you to a page that looks ordinary; evaluate the request, not only the page.

Pause when the page creates pressure

Claims that an account will be closed, a payment must be made immediately, a delivery is blocked, or an unusual offer will disappear can be designed to make you act before checking. Google Safety Center guidance, checked October 10, 2026, advises resisting urgency and unusually low prices. Urgency is a reason to verify through another route, not a reason to skip verification.

Question unexpected requests for sensitive information

Be especially cautious if an unexpected page asks for a password, payment card, bank details, identity information, or other personal data. A familiar company name does not establish that it needs the information in this interaction. Ask whether you initiated the transaction or account change, whether you reached the site through a route you trust, and whether the organization can confirm the request independently.

Do not send information simply because a page gives a plausible explanation or displays details that seem to match your account. If the request is unexpected, close the page and verify the issue using the organization’s known official site or a trusted phone number. Do not call a number shown only in the suspicious message or page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat downloads and attachments as a separate risk

A site or message may ask you to download a file, open an attachment, or install something to resolve a supposed security or account problem. Do not download or run a file just because the page claims it is required. Verify the need through the organization’s independently reached website or support channel before proceeding. CISA identifies harmful attachments as one way phishing can cause harm.

The same pause applies if the instruction is to install a program or open a file before you can view an alert or fix an account. The request itself is not proof that the download is legitimate. Confirm the issue using a trusted route first; if you cannot confirm it, do not let urgency push you into opening or running the file.

Respond correctly to browser warnings

If Chrome displays a full-page warning that a site is dangerous, do not use the site or enter personal information there. Chrome Help says dangerous pages can threaten privacy and security and may attempt to install harmful software. Leave the page rather than treating the warning as a minor obstacle.

The absence of a warning does not mean the site is legitimate. Browser warnings are a useful stop signal, but they are not a guarantee that every harmful or deceptive site will be identified. Continue checking the domain and the request even if the browser has not raised an alert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, treat the warning and the other checks as different kinds of evidence. A warning means stop; a clear browser screen is not an endorsement. You still need to determine whether the domain matches the organization and whether that organization confirms the specific action you were asked to take.

A safer way to handle a link or account alert

When a message says there is a problem with an account, payment, delivery, or subscription, use a route that does not depend on the message itself:

  1. Do not click the message’s link or call its number. Keep the message available in case you need to report it, but do not use it to access the account.
  2. Open the organization’s known official website yourself. Use a previously saved address or another trusted source, and check the domain in the address bar before signing in.
  3. Look for the claimed issue after reaching the account independently. If the alert is not reflected there, do not follow the original page’s instructions without further confirmation.
  4. Contact the organization through a trusted number or support route. The FTC advises using a phone number or website already known to be real, rather than the details supplied in a suspicious message.
  5. Act only on the request the organization confirms. If it cannot independently confirm the action, do not provide credentials, payment details, or personal information to the page that prompted the concern.

Google Safety Center guidance checked October 10, 2026 similarly recommends seeking support through an official website or phone number. The point is to break the link between the claim and the evidence: a message should not be allowed to supply both the alarming story and the only route for checking it.

Keep the confirmation narrow and specific. Learning that an organization has an account system, or that it sometimes sends alerts, does not confirm that this particular message or payment request is genuine. Check whether the specific issue appears after you reach the account independently, or ask support through the verified route to confirm that action. If you get no independent confirmation, the safest choice is not to follow the page’s instructions.

Compare the evidence before deciding

There is no single sign that answers every question. Consider these checks separately rather than allowing one reassuring detail to stand in for the others:

  • Domain match: Does the full domain match the organization’s known official address, or is the match based only on a logo or a familiar-looking word?
  • Independent confirmation: Can you confirm the issue through an official site, app, or phone number reached without relying on the suspicious message?
  • Expected interaction: Did you initiate the sign-in, purchase, or account change, and does the requested information make sense for that interaction?
  • Browser status: Is there a dangerous-site warning? If so, leave. If not, continue the other checks rather than treating silence as approval.
  • Connection encryption: Does the address use HTTPS? This is useful information about the connection, but it does not confirm the operator or the request.

These checks answer different questions. HTTPS is about connection security; the domain comparison is about where the browser is connecting; independent confirmation is about whether the organization recognizes the request. A strong result on one axis does not cancel a concern on another. For example, an encrypted connection and a polished page still leave the question of who operates the domain unanswered.

If one of the important questions remains unresolved, do not treat the rest as enough to proceed. You can pause, close the page, and return through a trusted route later. A legitimate request should be confirmable without requiring you to rely only on an unsolicited link, an urgent warning, or a page’s own explanation.

What to do if you already clicked, paid, or shared information

Choose the response based on what happened. A visit to a page is not the same as entering a password or running a download, but any information or action you did provide can change what needs attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you entered a password or other sign-in details

Go to the organization’s official site using a trusted route, not the link you followed, and change the exposed password. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Review the affected account for changes you did not make and contact the organization through its verified support channel if access or account settings appear compromised. Do not use a recovery link from the suspicious message to make these changes.

If you shared personal or financial information

Contact the relevant financial institution or organization through a trusted number or website and explain what information you disclosed so it can advise you on the account or payment involved. The FTC directs people whose personal or financial details were exposed to IdentityTheft.gov for steps addressing identity theft. Follow the guidance relevant to the information you shared; a bank-card disclosure and an identity-information disclosure may call for different actions.

If you downloaded or opened a file

Do not open it again or follow further instructions from the page. The FTC recommends updating security software and scanning the device after a harmful download. If the device shows unusual behavior or you cannot complete a scan, seek help through a trusted technical-support route rather than through a contact supplied by the suspicious page.

If you only opened the page

Close it and do not interact further. If you did not enter information, make a payment, download or run a file, or grant access, the next step is to avoid the site and independently verify any claim that brought you there. If you did take one of those actions, use the matching response above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be precise about what happened when you contact the organization: whether you only visited, entered sign-in details, submitted payment or identity information, or downloaded a file. That helps the organization direct you to steps relevant to the exposed account or device. Do not return to the questionable page to retrieve contact information or complete a second instruction.

Report the message when appropriate

Reporting can help the relevant organization or authorities address phishing. The FTC’s consumer guidance, checked October 10, 2026, lists reporting options for suspicious email and text messages. CISA’s Secure Our World guidance also treats recognizing and reporting phishing as part of its public safety advice. Use the reporting option appropriate to the message and your location; the cited guidance is US-focused and does not establish a universal reporting process for every country.

If you are unsure whether a message is genuinely from a company, report or ask about it using a contact method reached independently. Do not reply to the suspicious sender with personal details.

What a legitimacy check can establish

These checks help you make a safer decision; they do not prove with certainty that a site is safe. The guidance from the FBI IC3, FTC, CISA, and Google addresses general consumer risks and does not determine the legitimacy of a particular address or guarantee that every harmful site will trigger a browser warning. Browser labels and agency procedures can also change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before following instructions, keep the questions distinct: does the domain match the organization, has the organization confirmed this particular request through an independent route, and is the browser warning-free? HTTPS answers only whether the connection to the displayed domain is encrypted. If identity or purpose remains uncertain, do not submit information or take the requested action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does HTTPS or a padlock mean a website is legitimate?

No. HTTPS and a site certificate indicate that the browser’s connection to the displayed domain is encrypted. They do not prove that the domain belongs to the organization you intended to visit or that its instructions are honest. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center warned about this in a June 10, 2019 public service announcement.

What should I do if a website says my account will be closed unless I act now?

Pause and verify the claim through a route you reach independently. Open the organization’s known official website yourself or call a number from a trusted record; do not use the suspicious message’s link or number. Google Safety Center advises resisting urgency, and urgency is a reason to check rather than skip verification.

Can I trust a website if my browser does not show a warning?

No warning is not proof of legitimacy. If Chrome displays a dangerous-site warning, leave and do not enter personal information. If there is no warning, still check the full domain and independently confirm the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I check whether a link goes to the organization it claims to represent?

Read the full domain in the address bar and compare it with an address you already know is official. Look for misspellings, extra words or characters, misleading subdomains, and a different domain ending. A logo or familiar organization name somewhere in the address is not enough.

What should I do if I already shared personal or financial details?

Contact the relevant organization or financial institution through a trusted phone number or website and explain what you disclosed. The FTC directs people whose personal or financial information was exposed to IdentityTheft.gov for identity-theft response steps. If you downloaded a harmful file, the FTC recommends updating security software and scanning the device.

Should I use a suspicious message’s phone number to verify it?

No. Contact the organization using a phone number or website you already know is real, not details supplied by the suspicious message. The FTC recommends independent contact when a message claims to come from a known company.

The Bottom Line

Before following a website’s instructions, check the full domain, heed any browser danger warning, and confirm unexpected requests through the organization’s known official site or phone number. HTTPS protects the connection to a domain; it does not prove who operates the site or whether its request is legitimate. If you cannot independently confirm the request, do not sign in, pay, download, or share information.
