Before investing in a Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) in India, check two things separately: whether the mutual fund is eligible to launch the SIF, and whether you can meet the investor minimum. Under SEBI’s Master Circular for Mutual Funds as of March 20, 2026, the standard investor threshold is ₹10 lakh across the investment strategies of the specific SIF, aggregated at PAN level. Regular mutual fund holdings do not count. Your ability to redeem depends on the strategy’s terms, including its redemption frequency and any notice period.
What “SIF eligibility” means
Eligibility can refer to two different tests. The first applies to the mutual fund that wants to launch a SIF; the second applies to you as an investor. Passing one test does not mean you have passed the other. The investor test is not a general approval to invest in any SIF, and the launch conditions are not personal financial requirements for investors.

Whether a mutual fund can launch a SIF
SEBI’s framework provides two routes for a mutual fund to qualify to launch an SIF. Under Route 1, the mutual fund must have operated for at least three years and have average assets under management (AUM) of at least ₹10,000 crore over the immediately preceding three years. Route 2 relies on prescribed experience and AUM conditions for the SIF’s chief investment officer (CIO) and an additional fund manager. The specified enforcement-history condition also applies. These are fund-launch conditions, not a checklist of personal qualifications for an investor.
The available regulatory summary does not specify the detailed experience and AUM tests under Route 2, so do not infer that a particular fund qualifies based only on the credentials of one investment professional. If the launch route matters to your due diligence, confirm the fund’s status and disclosures with the AMC and the relevant SEBI materials.

Whether you meet the investor minimum
The standard minimum investment threshold is ₹10 lakh, counted across the investment strategies offered by the specific SIF and aggregated under the investor’s PAN. Holdings in regular mutual fund schemes do not count, even if those schemes are managed by the same AMC. The threshold is therefore not simply the amount you have invested with an AMC or across all mutual funds.
For example, if your holdings across two strategies of one SIF total ₹10 lakh under your PAN, those holdings meet the stated threshold even if neither strategy alone contains ₹10 lakh. But ₹7 lakh in that SIF plus ₹3 lakh in a regular mutual fund scheme does not make the SIF total ₹10 lakh.
How to check a SIF before placing an order
- Identify the exact SIF and strategy. Use the AMC’s materials for the SIF you intend to invest in, and confirm the name of the specific investment strategy. Do not assume another strategy’s dealing timetable or redemption terms apply.
- Read the strategy’s current offer and information documents. Find the stated subscription frequency, redemption frequency, any notice period, and the strategy-specific dealing terms. Check that the documents apply to the strategy and offer you are considering.
- Work out your PAN-level total in that SIF. Add your holdings across the investment strategies offered by that particular SIF. Exclude regular mutual fund scheme holdings, including schemes from the same AMC. Ask the AMC or its transaction platform how it will account for existing holdings and the proposed transaction before submitting a redemption request.
- Check whether a proposed redemption would take you below ₹10 lakh. Compare the value of your SIF holdings after the transaction with the threshold. A transaction that reduces the aggregate below the threshold can have different consequences from an NAV-driven fall.
- Confirm how and when an exit can be processed. Check the strategy’s redemption schedule and notice provisions rather than assuming that you can redeem on any business day or receive the proceeds immediately.
It helps to make the threshold check concrete before you submit anything. Write down which strategies belong to the SIF you are considering, the holdings you have in each under your PAN, and the total that the AMC or platform says it will use. Keep regular mutual fund schemes out of this calculation, even where they sit with the same AMC. If you intend to redeem, ask how the proposed order affects that aggregate rather than looking only at the balance in the strategy from which you are withdrawing.

Locate the subscription schedule and redemption schedule separately, along with any notice period and stated dealing conditions. If a document uses terms you cannot reconcile with the platform’s order flow, seek clarification from the AMC before placing the transaction. The key is not to assume that a general description of SIFs or a document for a different strategy answers the operational question for your investment.
Can you redeem a SIF investment whenever you want?
There is no single redemption timetable that applies to every SIF strategy. SEBI’s framework specifies minimum redemption frequencies by strategy category, but an AMC may choose a less frequent schedule. Subscription and redemption frequencies may differ, and a strategy may set a notice period based on its structure and liquidity risk.
That means the subscription schedule is not a reliable guide to how often you can exit. A strategy that accepts subscriptions on a particular schedule need not offer redemptions on the same schedule. Nor does the SIF label alone establish same-day liquidity. The controlling details are in the documents for the specific strategy: look for the stated redemption frequency, notice period, and applicable process.
The regulatory materials summarized here identify category-level frequencies that can include daily, weekly, or twice-weekly redemption, among other applicable schedules. They do not provide a complete category-by-category table of frequency values. Do not assign one of those schedules to a strategy without checking its current documents.

Think of redemption access as a combination of the frequency offered and any notice requirement, not as a promise of immediate cash. A daily, weekly, or twice-weekly schedule describes how often the strategy may accept redemptions under its terms; it does not by itself establish that every order can be submitted at any time or processed without notice. The specific offer and information documents are where you should confirm the selected schedule. Since an AMC may choose a less frequent schedule than the regulatory category minimum, checking only the category name is not enough.
Also separate your ordinary exit planning from the minimum-threshold rules. Even when a strategy’s redemption window is open, an investor-initiated transaction that takes the aggregate below ₹10 lakh can result in an active breach and a debit freeze. Conversely, a market fall below the minimum does not trigger the same cure path, but restricts the investor to redeeming the entire remaining SIF investment. Both the dealing schedule and the threshold treatment matter when deciding whether a strategy’s liquidity suits your needs.
What happens if your SIF value falls below ₹10 lakh?
The key distinction is whether your own transaction caused the shortfall or a market-driven change in NAV did. SEBI treats these situations differently.
Active shortfall: your transaction takes the total below the threshold
If an investor-initiated transaction, such as a redemption, pushes the aggregate SIF holdings below ₹10 lakh, it can create an active breach. Units are frozen for debit, and the investor is given 30 calendar days to rebalance. If the investor does not rebalance during that period, the AMC automatically redeems the frozen units at the applicable NAV of the next immediate business day after the 30-day period.
For example, if your PAN-level holdings in a SIF total ₹12 lakh, a redemption of ₹3 lakh would take the total to ₹9 lakh and could create an active breach. Do not treat the order as an ordinary partial exit: check with the AMC or platform how it will apply the threshold and the applicable cure process before submitting it.
The 30-day period is a calendar-day period, not a statement that the units remain freely available for further debit transactions during that time. The rules describe a freeze on units for debit and a period in which the investor can rebalance. If the shortfall is not rebalanced, the automatic redemption applies to the frozen units, at the applicable NAV of the next immediate business day after the notice period. Do not assume that a pending redemption can be reversed or that you can choose a later NAV date; check the AMC’s instructions for the specific account and transaction.
Consider a second example: an investor has ₹6 lakh in one strategy and ₹5 lakh in another strategy of the same SIF under the same PAN, giving an aggregate of ₹11 lakh. A ₹2 lakh investor-initiated redemption would leave ₹9 lakh across that SIF. The fact that the remaining holdings are spread across more than one strategy does not make the investor’s aggregate fall disappear. The relevant check is the total across the strategies of that SIF, not merely the amount remaining in one strategy. Regular schemes at the AMC cannot be added to fill the gap.

Passive shortfall: NAV movements take the total below the threshold
If the value falls below ₹10 lakh because of a market-driven NAV decline rather than an investor-initiated transaction, it is a passive breach and is not treated as a violation. However, the investor may redeem only the entire remaining SIF investment; a partial redemption is not permitted while the value remains below the threshold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor example, if your SIF holdings fall from ₹10 lakh to ₹9.5 lakh solely because the NAV declines, the passive-breach rule applies. It is different from deliberately placing a redemption that takes your holdings below the minimum.
This distinction matters when you are deciding what to do after a fall in value. A passive shortfall does not mean the investor has breached the rule by choosing a transaction, but it does not preserve the option of making a partial withdrawal. Under SEBI’s Master Circular for Mutual Funds as of March 20, 2026, the stated consequence is that the investor may redeem only the entire remaining investment amount from the SIF. If you need to understand how the AMC applies that restriction across your holdings, confirm the treatment with the AMC before submitting an order.
For a practical comparison, imagine two investors whose aggregate falls from ₹10 lakh to ₹9 lakh. If one investor initiated a redemption that pushed the holdings below the threshold, the active-breach process, including a debit freeze and 30-calendar-day opportunity to rebalance, is relevant. If the other investor’s holdings fell below the threshold solely because NAV declined, the shortfall is passive; it is not treated as a violation, but only a full redemption of the remaining SIF investment is permitted. The final value is below the same threshold in both cases, but the cause determines the rule that applies.
How to compare two SIF strategies
Compare the actual terms for each strategy rather than relying on the fund name, AMC, or another SIF’s rules. A useful comparison records the following items side by side:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Threshold calculation | How the AMC monitors the ₹10 lakh aggregate across the specific SIF’s strategies under your PAN, and how it treats a proposed transaction. |
| Redemption frequency | The strategy’s stated schedule. Regulatory minimum frequencies vary by category, and the AMC may choose a less frequent schedule. |
| Notice and liquidity terms | Whether advance notice is required, the relevant notice period, and other stated redemption conditions in the strategy documents. |
| Subscription schedule | When subscriptions are accepted. Do not assume this schedule is the same as the redemption schedule. |
| Shortfall treatment | The process for an investor-initiated active breach and the full-redemption-only restriction following a passive breach. |
When comparing two options, do not stop after noting that both are SIFs or both have a stated minimum threshold. Record the strategy name and the document date you are using, then capture the actual redemption schedule and notice period for each. One strategy could offer a different schedule from another, and an AMC can choose terms that are less frequent than the applicable category-level minimum. Compare the subscription schedule too, but keep it in a separate column so it does not get mistaken for an exit timetable.
Your comparison should also show what happens if your aggregate gets close to ₹10 lakh. Ask how the AMC or transaction platform calculates the PAN-level SIF total, whether a proposed redemption would create an active shortfall, and what process applies if the value moves below the threshold because of NAV changes. This is a comparison of access and rule consequences, not just headline frequency. SEBI’s framework does not provide a single schedule or notice period for all strategies, so the details need to come from each strategy’s own current documents.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting all AMC investments toward the minimum. Only the aggregate investment across strategies of the specific SIF is relevant; regular mutual fund scheme holdings are excluded.
- Confusing launch eligibility with investor eligibility. The three-year operating history and ₹10,000 crore average AUM route, or the professional-experience route, concern whether the mutual fund can launch an SIF.
- Assuming all SIFs allow the same exit schedule. Frequency and notice terms are strategy-specific, and an AMC may provide a less frequent schedule than the category-level regulatory minimum.
- Treating an NAV decline like a redemption-triggered shortfall. The rules distinguish passive falls in value from active breaches caused by investor-initiated transactions.
- Assuming a partial withdrawal is always possible below the threshold. A passive breach restricts redemption to the entire remaining investment; an active breach invokes the debit-freeze and rebalance process.
Which documents and dates matter
The framework described here is based on SEBI’s Master Circular for Mutual Funds as of March 20, 2026, including its SIF provisions. The minimum-threshold monitoring process was set out in SEBI’s July 29, 2025 circular and reflected in the Master Circular. SEBI’s SIF framework dates to February 27, 2025, with a clarification dated April 9, 2025; an Investment Strategy Information Document example was issued in August 2025.
For an investment decision, use the current documents for the specific strategy and confirm the applicable terms with the AMC. A regulatory category’s minimum frequency does not tell you the exact schedule selected by an AMC, and a document for one strategy should not be treated as the terms for another.

SEBI’s February 27, 2025 SIF framework and April 9, 2025 clarification provide the framework’s launch and strategy context. These dates help identify which regulatory materials underpin the rules summarized here, but they do not replace checking the current documents issued for the strategy you are considering.
SEBI’s Master Circular, paragraph 21.4.4, says: “The AMC shall ensure that the investor’s total investment value does not fall below the Minimum Investment Threshold due to redemption transactions initiated by the investor.” Paragraph 21.4.5 addresses passive breaches: “However, if the total investment value falls below the threshold due to a passive breach, the investor shall only be permitted to redeem the entire remaining investment amount from the SIF”. Those provisions explain why it is important to identify whether a decline came from an investor-initiated transaction or an NAV movement.
What to do before you invest or redeem
Before investing, verify that you are looking at the intended SIF and strategy, calculate your total holdings in that SIF under your PAN, and make sure you are not relying on regular mutual fund investments to reach ₹10 lakh. Read the specific strategy’s current offer and information documents for its subscription frequency, redemption frequency, notice period, and dealing terms.
Before redeeming, check the same PAN-level aggregate after the proposed transaction. If the transaction could take the total below ₹10 lakh, ask the AMC or platform what active-breach procedure will apply. If the value is already below the threshold because of NAV changes, confirm the full-redemption-only restriction. In either case, account for the actual schedule and any notice period: the SIF label alone does not tell you when an exit can be processed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum investment in an SIF?
The standard minimum investment threshold is ₹10 lakh, aggregated at PAN level across the investment strategies offered by the specific SIF. Check the current documents and the AMC’s handling of your holdings before placing an order.
Best Value
Does my regular mutual fund investment count toward the SIF minimum?
No. Regular mutual fund scheme holdings are excluded from the ₹10 lakh SIF threshold, even if they are with the same AMC. The relevant aggregation is across strategies of the specific SIF.
Can I redeem my SIF investment anytime?
There is no universal SIF redemption timetable. The strategy’s redemption frequency and any notice period are specific to its terms. SEBI sets category-level minimum frequencies, but an AMC may choose a less frequent schedule; check the current strategy information and offer documents.
What happens if my SIF value falls below ₹10 lakh?
The consequence depends on why it fell. An investor-initiated transaction that causes an active breach can lead to units being frozen for debit and a 30-calendar-day period to rebalance. If NAV movements alone cause a passive breach, it is not treated as a violation, but only the entire remaining SIF investment may be redeemed.
How long do I have to fix an active SIF shortfall?
The investor has 30 calendar days to rebalance after an active breach. If the investor does not rebalance, the AMC automatically redeems the frozen units at the applicable NAV of the next immediate business day after that period.
Do all strategies in one SIF need to individually hold ₹10 lakh?
The standard threshold is aggregated across the investment strategies offered by that specific SIF at PAN level, so it is not necessarily a separate ₹10 lakh in each strategy. Confirm with the AMC how existing holdings and a proposed transaction are counted.
Does an SIF subscription schedule tell me when I can redeem?
No. Subscription and redemption frequency may differ. Check the redemption frequency and any notice requirement stated for the specific strategy rather than inferring exit terms from its subscription schedule.
The Bottom Line
The standard SIF investor minimum is ₹10 lakh across the strategies of the specific SIF at PAN level; regular mutual fund investments do not count. Before investing or redeeming, confirm the strategy’s actual redemption schedule and notice terms. If holdings fall below the minimum, distinguish an investor-initiated active breach from a passive NAV-driven shortfall because their consequences differ.
