What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To tell whether a website is down for everyone or just you, check it from a connection outside your own network and compare the result with the service’s official status page. If the site works from another network but not yours, investigate your browser, device, Wi-Fi, DNS, or route to the site. If outside checks fail and the operator reports an incident, a service-side outage is much more likely. Neither result alone proves that every user, location, or feature has the same experience.
Start with the quickest checks
- Check the address. Make sure the URL is spelled correctly, then retry once. A typo or an outdated link can look like an outage. If you followed a link, compare its address with the service’s usual domain rather than repeatedly refreshing a possibly incorrect URL.
- Check whether other sites load. Try a few unrelated websites. If several fail, investigate your internet connection before treating one site as the cause. Google Chrome Help recommends checking whether the problem affects one website or multiple websites. If unrelated sites work but one does not, continue checking that site and your path to it.
- Check the site from another connection. Turn off Wi-Fi on a phone and try mobile data, or use another network. A successful load elsewhere points toward a problem specific to your device, browser, network, or route. A failure elsewhere increases the likelihood of a site-side issue but does not prove a universal outage. Make sure Wi-Fi is actually off when testing mobile data; otherwise, the phone may still be using the same connection.
- Use an independent website checker. A checker tests reachability from its own systems, providing a useful comparison with your device and network. A successful result means the checker reached the site from its location; it does not guarantee that your browser, account, region, or the exact feature you need works.
- Look at the operator’s status page. Check for an incident affecting the website or the component you need. Treat the notice as one piece of evidence: status pages may lag or may not reflect a problem limited to one page, feature, or location. Look for the incident’s scope and update time, not just a green or red indicator.
This sequence is usually enough to decide whether to wait for the service operator or troubleshoot locally. An independent checker is useful, but it tests from its own systems—not necessarily from your location, browser session, or account. These first-line checks do not require command-line tools or equipment purchases: use a different network if one is available, a checker, and the operator’s public status information.

How to read the evidence
Different checks test different parts of the journey from your device to a working page. A basic reachability check does not necessarily test the same thing as opening a particular page, signing in, or completing an action. When results conflict, compare four things: where each check ran, what network or geographic location it used, which layer or feature it tested, and when the result was observed.
A check can stop at different points. It may look up a domain through DNS, establish a connection, negotiate TLS, receive an HTTP response, fetch a page, or exercise a full feature such as login. Reaching one layer does not establish that every layer after it works. For example, a site can respond to a basic request while a particular page or signed-in workflow fails. A page may also load eventually but be slow because one part of the request takes longer than usual.

| What you see | What it suggests | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| An independent check succeeds, but your browser fails | The site answered from the checker’s location. A browser, device, local network, or route-specific problem is more likely than a site-wide failure. | Try another network, then test another browser or a private window. If the problem stays on one network or device, narrow it down there. |
| Independent checks fail and the operator reports an incident | These are complementary signals and together are strong evidence of a service-side problem. | Follow the operator’s updates and retry later. If the notice identifies a component, check whether it matches the page or feature that fails for you. |
| Independent checks fail, but the status page is green | The result is inconclusive. The checker may be blocked, the problem may be regional or component-specific, or the status page may not yet reflect it. | Repeat from another network or location if available, and compare with reports from other visitors. Check again after a short interval. |
| The home page opens, but one page, sign-in, or feature does not | A basic site check can succeed while a particular page or application flow is broken. | Test the exact page or action, not just the home page. Check for a relevant component incident and note any error message. |
| The site opens slowly but does not fail outright | This may be a delay in DNS lookup, connection setup, TLS negotiation, redirects, or transferring the page rather than a complete outage. | Compare the same page over another network. If you are technically experienced, use request-timing diagnostics to identify which part is slow. |
Why an external check is not proof
A checker asks from its own server whether it can reach a site. Its location, network path, and request may differ from yours. Some sites block automated requests, so a checker can report a failure even when a person can browse normally. Conversely, a checker may reach a page that is broken for your region or account. Use its result as a signal, not a guarantee about every visitor.
Checker methods also differ. One service may make a basic page request; another describes checks across DNS, connection, TLS, and page fetching, and may show visitor reports alongside its results. Even a more detailed check is not the same as reproducing your browser session or every action on the site. Treat a checker’s wording as a description of what it tested, rather than as a promise that all parts of the website are healthy. A timestamp matters too: a result taken before an incident began or after it temporarily cleared may disagree with what you see now.
Why a green status page is not conclusive
An operator’s status page is the best place to find its own incident information, but a green page does not establish that every route, region, or feature is healthy. A reported incident is more informative when it names the affected component and matches what you cannot use. For example, Cloudflare’s status page lists component and location status; its dashboard notification options depend on plan availability.
Official status information and independent checks answer different questions. The operator can describe known incidents and affected components; an outside check offers a separate observation from its own network. If they disagree, do not automatically dismiss either one. A narrow or newly developing problem may not yet appear on the status page, while a checker can be blocked or see a failure that is limited to its location. Compare the exact affected service, location, test, and timestamp before drawing a conclusion.
Isolate browser and device problems
If the site works from another connection or an independent check succeeds while your browser fails, change one variable at a time. This makes it easier to identify the cause instead of applying several fixes without knowing which mattered. Retry the same URL or action after each change so the comparisons remain meaningful.

- Try a different browser. If the page loads there, the issue is more likely related to the original browser’s state, settings, or extensions than to a general outage. If both browsers fail on the same device, the cause may lie elsewhere, but that result alone does not identify it.
- Try a private window. This can help distinguish ordinary browsing state from a broader connection problem. If it works only in the private window, focus on the original browser profile and its extensions or stored site data. Private browsing is a comparison, not a guarantee that extensions or all browser settings are absent.
- Temporarily disable extensions. Retry the page. If it begins working, turn extensions back on one at a time until the problem returns; that identifies a likely conflict. Avoid disabling every browser protection indefinitely: the purpose is to test briefly, then restore the settings you need.
- Clear browsing data only after simpler tests. Stored cookies or other site state may be involved, but clearing data can sign you out or remove information you rely on. Do it only if you are prepared to sign in again and restore any affected preferences. Since a different browser or private window is a less disruptive test, try those first.
- Check device settings and security software. Airplane mode, firewall or antivirus software, and other device-level controls can interfere with connections. Change a setting only if you understand its effect; do not leave protective software disabled as a workaround.
Google Chrome Help identifies browser state and extensions, device settings, security software, modem or router issues, and website downtime among possible causes of connection and loading errors. A single failed page does not tell you which cause applies, so compare before changing settings. If the error occurs in several browsers but only on one device, focus on that device’s configuration rather than repeatedly clearing browser data.
Compare devices and networks to locate the fault
Use a second device and a second network as controlled comparisons. The useful question is whether the failure follows the device or follows the network. If possible, test the same URL, at roughly the same time, and note whether you used Wi-Fi or mobile data. That helps avoid mistaking a changing incident for a difference between devices.
| Comparison result | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| The site fails on one device, but loads on another device using the same Wi-Fi | The affected device: its browser, settings, security software, or local configuration. |
| The site fails on multiple devices using the same Wi-Fi, but works over mobile data | The Wi-Fi network, router or modem, DNS configuration, ISP, or a network policy affecting that connection. |
| The same device fails on Wi-Fi but works over mobile data | The Wi-Fi network or its route to the site is more likely than a general problem with the device. |
| The site fails on multiple devices and unrelated networks, and the operator reports an incident | A service-side problem is likely; follow the operator’s incident information. |
| The site fails only from one network, while outside checks and other networks work | A network-specific path, DNS, or policy issue is possible even if the website itself is operating normally. |
These comparisons narrow the search; they do not identify a precise cause by themselves. For example, a failure on one Wi-Fi network could arise from its DNS settings, router, ISP, network policy, or route to the site. If multiple devices lose access to many unrelated sites on that Wi-Fi, the evidence points more broadly toward the connection than toward one website. If only one site fails there, a site-specific route or policy remains possible. Avoid replacing equipment or changing several network settings just because one website will not load.
Do not assume that switching to mobile data proves the website is healthy everywhere. It proves only that the page behaved differently from a second connection at that time. The path from each network to a site can differ, and a problem may be limited to a region, provider, or feature. Likewise, an outage notice for one service component may explain a failed sign-in even if the home page remains available.
Use advanced diagnostics only for the right symptom
Most visitors do not need command-line tools to decide whether to wait or troubleshoot. They become useful when you administer the site or have enough technical experience to interpret the result. Start with the question you want the tool to answer; an output that is not tied to a specific symptom can be difficult to interpret.

- Use
curlwhen you need to inspect an HTTP request. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance describes using it to examine responses, headers, errors, TLS, and performance without browser interference. A request that succeeds incurlbut fails in a browser can help separate browser behavior from the server response, although it still may not reproduce a signed-in session or a complete user journey. It can also help distinguish whether the failure is associated with a response or with the browser’s handling of the page. - Use traceroute or MTR for timeouts or suspected network-path trouble. Cloudflare lists these tools for investigating the route between a client and a site. A path result can help an experienced user or administrator investigate where connectivity appears to stop; it is not a required test for an ordinary loading error. Use these tools when the symptom points to a timeout or path issue, not as a routine first step for every page that fails.
For a slow page, timing can help distinguish delays in DNS lookup, TLS handshake, redirects, or data transfer. For a complete failure, first establish whether it is limited to one device or network. Choose a diagnostic that matches the symptom rather than running tools without a question in mind. Cloudflare’s guidance, updated August 12, 2026, describes these as troubleshooting options for examining requests and network paths, not prerequisites for ordinary visitors.

- One site or many? If many unrelated sites fail, check your connection. If only one does, confirm the address and continue.
- Does it work outside your connection? Test an independent checker or another network. If it works elsewhere, investigate the browser, device, or network you were using.
- Does the official status page report a matching incident? If yes, follow its updates. If no, treat the evidence as unresolved rather than assuming either that the site is fine or that it is down for everyone.
- Does the problem follow a browser, device, or network? Compare a second browser, device, and connection. The pattern points to the layer worth checking next.
- Is only one feature failing, or is the page merely slow? Test the specific page or action and distinguish a partial failure or delay from a complete reachability failure.
The order is meant to save time: begin with low-effort comparisons before changing settings or using technical tools. If an operator confirms an incident that matches your symptom, repeated local resets are unlikely to clarify whether the service is down. If outside checks are successful and the issue follows one device or connection, continue with that narrower diagnosis.
What to record if the problem continues
A concise report helps the service operator or your network support team distinguish a general outage from a limited failure. Record the exact URL or feature, the time and time zone, the error text, and whether the issue reproduces in another browser, on another device, or over another network. Note whether the page is unreachable, slow, or only partly functional. Do not include passwords, authentication codes, or other private account information.
When checks disagree, keep the timestamps with the results. A checker, status page, and your own test may be observing different locations or different moments; comparing them without timing can make a changing incident look contradictory. Include the network used for each comparison, such as home Wi-Fi or mobile data, and distinguish a test of the home page from one of a particular page or feature. These details make it easier to describe what is failing without claiming that every visitor has the same problem.

First check whether unrelated sites load. If several fail, your connection may be involved. If one site fails, compare it using an independent checker or a different network, then check the operator’s status page. A site working over mobile data but not Wi-Fi points toward a network-specific issue; it does not by itself identify whether the cause is DNS, the router, ISP, policy, or route.

Can an outage checker be wrong?
Yes. A checker may be blocked by the site, use a different location or network path, or test only basic reachability rather than the page or feature you need. A successful result is not proof that every user can reach the service, and a failed result is not proof of a universal outage. Compare it with your own test and the operator’s status information.
What if a website checker says the site is up but I still can’t open it?
Try the same URL in another browser or a private window, then compare another device on the same Wi-Fi and your device on a different network. If the site works elsewhere, the pattern points toward your browser, device, or network path. If a home page works but sign-in or one page does not, test that exact feature and look for a matching component incident.
What if the status page says everything is operational?
A green status page is useful but not conclusive. A problem may be regional, limited to a component, or not yet reflected in the operator’s notice. Repeat the check later, compare another network or location if available, and note whether an independent checker or other visitors report a problem. Treat conflicting results as unresolved until the scope becomes clearer.
Should I clear my browser data or restart my router?
Try less disruptive comparisons first: another browser, a private window, and another device or network. Clearing browsing data can remove cookies or site state and sign you out, so reserve it for when browser state is a plausible cause. A problem on one Wi-Fi network across multiple devices may warrant investigating the router, modem, DNS, ISP, or network policy, but one failing website alone is not a reason to replace equipment or change several settings at once.

Do I need to use curl or traceroute?
No. Most visitors can make the distinction with an independent check, the official status page, and a comparison across browsers, devices, or networks. Cloudflare describes curl for inspecting HTTP requests, headers, errors, TLS, and performance, and traceroute or MTR for timeouts or suspected network-path problems. A failure on your device does not prove a website is down for everyone. Check the address, see whether other sites load, compare the site from another connection or an independent checker, and read the operator’s status page. When results disagree, compare the location, network, feature tested, and timestamp. If the site works elsewhere, narrow the issue by testing browsers, devices, and networks one at a time.
