Do not assume a visual novel demo save will carry over to the full game. Transfer support depends on the specific title, platform, and developer setup: some games offer a transfer prompt, while others explicitly say demo saves cannot be used. Check the game’s official instructions before buying, and keep the demo data intact until you have confirmed the full game loaded it.
Check the exact game’s transfer policy
Look for an official FAQ, support page, store listing, developer site, or patch notes for terms such as “demo save,” “transfer progress,” “carry over,” or “continue from demo.” Verify the exact game and edition; a rule for another title from the same publisher is not proof that this one works the same way.

Official examples show why the distinction matters. Square Enix documents one case where demo data can transfer only when no full-game save already exists, and another named demo whose save cannot be carried over. Bandai Namco’s guide for Echoes of Aincrad gives a title-specific “Carry over” prompt procedure. Confirm platform, account, and timing requirements
Some publishers require the full game to be launched on the same account or console used for the demo; another published procedure limits transfer to the same platform. Treat these as game-specific conditions. Confirm whether the demo and full game must be on the same storefront, device, account, or console before you start.

Check the sequence as well. A game may require the full version to be updated first, or show a transfer message only at first launch. A pre-existing full-game save may prevent the prompt in some titles. If official instructions describe a first-launch prompt, follow them before creating a new full-game save. Find out what “progress” means for this game
Ask whether the transfer includes the story position and choices needed to resume a route, or only bonus data such as gallery unlocks. Those are not interchangeable. Ren’Py, for example, has persistent data separate from ordinary save slots and allows developers to share selected persistent values between games. An unlocked gallery therefore does not prove that the full game can resume from the same scene. Ren’Py documentation on persistent data.

Understand cloud saves and save compatibility
Cloud sync does not by itself make two builds’ saves compatible. Steam Cloud synchronizes files that the developer has configured; Steamworks also supports shared cloud storage between app IDs, a feature commonly used to share demo and full-game saves. Developers must still configure the game and its files for that purpose. Having Steam Cloud enabled is not a consumer guarantee that a particular demo save will appear in the full game. Save compatibility is also an implementation choice, not a guarantee of the engine. Ren’Py 8.5.4 documentation says it tries to preserve compatibility but does not guarantee it even between releases. A safe check-before-buying workflow
- Identify the exact build. Record the game, edition, platform, and storefront, then search its official support material for demo-save transfer instructions.
- Check boundaries. Verify whether demo and full game must use the same platform, account, console, or storefront.
- Read the launch sequence. Note update requirements, when the prompt appears, and whether an existing full-game save affects transfer. Follow the documented order.
- Check the data being transferred. Confirm whether story scene and choices, unlocks, settings, or achievements are included; do not infer one from another.
- Use cloud settings only when directed. Enable the specific cloud features the game’s official instructions call for, if any.
- Keep the demo save. Do not delete it or manually move files unless the developer gives exact steps. Start the full game as instructed and verify that the transferred progress is present before removing demo data.

The developer can change the directory through configuration such as config.save_directory. Finding a save file only establishes where data is stored; it does not establish that the full build can load it. Avoid copying files between builds unless the developer documents that procedure. If the transfer prompt does not appear
- Confirm that the full game is updated and that you launched it on the account and platform specified by the publisher.
- Check that the demo data still exists and that you followed the documented first-launch sequence.
- Review whether an existing full-game save can block transfer for this title.
- Check the game’s official support page for a manual recovery procedure. Do not assume that enabling cloud sync or moving save files will make incompatible data load.
