Check compatibility against your laptop’s exact model and the specific USB-C port you plan to use. Confirm that the port accepts charging, compare the laptop’s documented power requirement with the charger’s USB Power Delivery (USB PD) output, and make sure the cable supports that power. A USB-C plug alone does not guarantee that a laptop can charge from it.
Check these four things
- The exact laptop model: Find the model number in system information, on the underside label, in your purchase records, or in your manufacturer account.
- The port’s charging support: In the official manual or specifications for that exact model, confirm that the USB-C port you intend to use supports charging or power input. Do not infer support from the connector’s shape, a data symbol, or documentation for a different model in the same product line. USB-IF explains that USB Type-C is not the same thing as USB Power Delivery: manufacturers choose which capabilities their products support (USB-IF product and packaging guidance).
- The laptop’s power requirement: Look up its required or recommended adapter wattage and any stated USB PD input requirements. Dell directs customers to the model’s manual; HP points users to its laptop specifications or Power Advisor (Dell adapter guidance; HP charging guide).
- The charger and cable: Check the charger label or manufacturer specifications for USB PD support and the output available from the port you will use. If it is a multiport charger, check whether the output is shared when multiple devices are connected. Check the cable’s power rating too; USB-C cables do not all support the same current or power.
How to compare charger wattage
Use the laptop’s documented requirement as the reference, not the largest number printed on the charger. USB PD allows the charger and laptop to negotiate a supported power level; the charger’s maximum rating does not mean it forces that amount into the computer. A higher-wattage charger can be suitable when both devices support the relevant USB PD capability and the laptop documentation permits it. Wattage alone, however, cannot prove that a port supports charging or that a charger meets the laptop’s needs.

A charger rated below the laptop’s recommendation may charge more slowly, fail to keep up during heavy use, or fall short of the model’s minimum power requirement. The outcome depends on the laptop. HP notes that lower wattage can mean slower charging, particularly under heavy use; Dell also warns that low-wattage adapters can charge slowly and, on some systems, may take a long time to provide enough power for startup.

Why the cable and USB PD matter
USB Power Delivery is a power-negotiation protocol used over USB Type-C; USB Type-C is the connector standard. USB-IF’s overview of USB PD Revision 3.1 describes support up to 240 W and fixed 28 V, 36 V, and 48 V levels for higher-power use. It also describes the earlier 100 W limit under a 20 V/5 A arrangement. These are standard capability figures, not recommendations or measured charging results for a particular laptop. They do not mean every computer or cable supports those levels. The overview covers Revision 3.1; USB-IF’s library lists later specification revisions, so these figures should not be read as confirmation of the newest specification limit (USB-IF USB Power Delivery overview).

The cable can limit power as well. USB-IF’s cable test specification addresses limiting current to a cable’s capacity, so check that the cable included with or purchased separately for the charger is rated for the intended power (USB-IF USB Type-C Functional Test Specification).

Verify the connection in use
- Connect the charger to the USB-C port that the manual identifies for charging.
- Check the laptop’s battery or power status for an adapter warning.
- Confirm that the battery percentage rises during the kind of work you expect to do. If it does not, check the charger’s output for that port, the cable rating, and the laptop’s documented minimum power requirement.
Use brand guidance only for the model it covers
- HP: HP suggests checking the adapter label, looking up the laptop’s specifications, or using HP Power Advisor. Its wattage examples are guidance for the relevant HP products, not universal requirements.
- Dell: Dell advises checking the product manual for adapter requirements and confirming that third-party adapters comply with USB PD. The cited support page is for Dell India; consult support information for your own model and region.
- Lenovo: Lenovo’s cited page describes power input for the ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 specifically. It is not evidence that every Lenovo laptop accepts USB-C charging (ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 power-input documentation).
