What a Switch 2 upgrade pack includes
Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle of the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack. The pack itself upgrades an existing physical or digital copy; it is not a substitute for the base game. Nintendo says the original game remains playable on Switch, while the Switch 2 Edition features are exclusive to Switch 2. See Nintendo’s upgrade and availability guide.

Upgrade packs are available for select games, not every Switch title. Confirm that the exact game has a pack before budgeting for one.
Check whether you can get the pack at no extra cost
Look up the game-specific listing and check your active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Some packs are included with that membership, but membership does not include every upgrade pack.

For example, Nintendo’s US support page lists the The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom upgrade pack at $9.99 USD and says active Expansion Pack members can download it at no additional charge. That is a title-specific US listing, not a standard price for Switch 2 upgrade packs. Check Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom DLC information and the Nintendo Store upgrade listing for the current details.
Judge the improvements for the game you play
Read the official feature list for your game and decide whether those particular changes will improve how you play. A higher resolution or frame rate may matter to someone who values visual smoothness; a new control scheme, mode, multiplayer feature, or companion-app feature may matter more to someone else. Do not assume a pack has the same kind of upgrade as another game.

If you already own the Switch game
Compare the pack’s price after any membership access with the specific features you expect to use. The upgrade works with an eligible physical or digital copy, so you do not need to buy the base game again just to upgrade it.

If you do not own the Switch game
Compare the total cost of buying the base game plus the upgrade pack with the price of a Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo says physical Switch 2 Edition game cards include both the Switch game and its upgrade pack; they are not a physical copy of the pack alone. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ for that packaging detail and compatibility information. For Tears of the Kingdom, the upgrade listing identifies the base-game requirement.

- Confirm the title is eligible. Find its Switch 2 upgrade-pack listing; packs exist only for select games.
- Check your starting point. Note whether you own the original Switch game physically or digitally.
- Find your effective price. Check the title’s Nintendo listing and whether an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership includes that exact pack.
