To check whether a Secret Lair card is authentic, inspect its printing and physical features without damaging it, then compare it with a known genuine card from the same printing. Wizards of the Coast’s counterfeit advice is general Magic guidance—not a Secret Lair-specific verification checklist—and no single visual test proves a card is genuine.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
Use a known genuine card with the same printing as your Secret Lair card whenever possible. Magic cards can vary between printings, so a difference in color or finish by itself is not proof of counterfeiting. Wizards of the Coast recommends comparing a suspect card with a genuine card from the same expansion in its general guide, “Buyer Beware” (April 26, 2004).

Check the cards under the same lighting and look at the overall printing, colored areas, edges, surface, and texture. A reference from a different printing may look noticeably different even when both cards are genuine.

Inspect print quality and the whole card
Look closely at lettering and symbols
Check whether colored lettering and symbols have inconsistent, blurry, or bleeding edges. A magnifier can make print patterns or irregularities easier to see. In “Buyer Beware,” Wizards author Mike Elliott points to the black-and-red edge of the word “Magic” on a card back as one useful place to inspect print quality. This is general Magic advice, not a Secret Lair authentication marker, and Wizards also notes that printings vary.

Consider more than one physical clue
Compare color, edge quality, gloss, texture, and wear with your reference card. An unusual feature can be a reason to look more carefully, but none of these observations establishes authenticity on its own. Surface condition and printing can differ, and counterfeit cards may respond to wear differently, according to Wizards’ guide.
Use light transmission only as a comparison
For a nonfoil card, you can compare how much light passes through it with how much passes through a known genuine card, using the same light source and conditions. Treat a difference as one clue to assess alongside the printing and other features, not as a verdict. Do not use this method to draw conclusions by comparing cards under different conditions.

Avoid tests that can damage the card
Do not bend, wet, or tear a valuable card as a routine authenticity check. Wizards cautions that repeated bending can crease even genuine cards and says not to use the bend test on foils. Its guide also describes the water test as unsuitable for foils; wetting a collectible can cause damage. Tearing is destructive and cannot be undone.

Secret Lair is an official Wizards of the Coast Magic product line, as described in its “Secret Lair Recap” (November 26, 2019). That announcement does not give authentication instructions. The cited counterfeit guide likewise does not set out a separate checklist for Secret Lair cards or identify a Secret Lair-specific security mark. Without current official evidence for a particular feature, do not treat a stamp, foil pattern, or package as proof that a card is genuine.

Ask an experienced dealer if you are still unsure
If careful, non-destructive inspection leaves you uncertain, show the card to an experienced Magic card dealer or retailer. Wizards identifies dealers and retailers who handle cards regularly as possible resources, but their view is an opinion rather than a formal certification. Wizards also says its employees are not permitted to consult on individual authenticity questions.

- Well look who it is! Come in, come in. Don’t mind the robe. “Uncle Deadpool” is just crashing at Secret Lair for a few days. I’m actually doing a little tour of lairs, hideouts, sanctums, and strongholds and leaving ratings online. It’s been a blast.
- But I wasn’t expecting guests. Just, uh, kick back, relax, and . . . don’t sit on my red suit! It’s drying out. But check this out—Secret Lair made me my own Deadpool cards! Isn’t that nice?
