Run dxdiag in Windows, record your PC’s operating system, processor, memory and graphics details, then compare them with Rockstar’s minimum requirements for the exact game and PC edition. Also check storage and sign-in or internet requirements. Meeting the minimum is a compatibility baseline—not a promise of smooth performance.
Find your PC’s specifications with DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Rockstar’s compatibility instructions recommend Windows’ built-in DirectX Diagnostic Tool, dxdiag, to identify computer hardware. You do not need a third-party checker to collect the basic information required for a first comparison. Rockstar’s guidance was last updated April 28, 2024: How can I check my PC is compatible with a Rockstar game?

- Open the Windows Start menu, search for
dxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Rockstar’s instructions describe opening Start > Run, enteringdxdiag, and selecting OK. - If Windows asks whether to check for WHQL digital signatures, choose Yes. This lets the tool check the signatures of installed drivers.
- On the System tab, note the operating system and version, processor, and memory. These are the details to compare with the game’s OS, CPU and RAM requirements.
- On the Display tab, record the graphics-card name, manufacturer, chip type, approximate total memory and driver version/date. If the computer has multiple display devices, inspect the relevant display entries rather than assuming the first listed device is the one you use for games.
- Open the Sound tab if the game’s requirements list a sound requirement. Record the device information shown there.
- Check how much storage is free and what type of drive is available. Rockstar’s game requirements may specify a capacity and a drive type;
dxdiagdoes not tell you whether the PC has the required free disk space.
Interpret graphics memory carefully
An integrated graphics chip may use shared system memory. Do not treat a displayed approximate total video memory figure as proof that the graphics device has the amount of dedicated VRAM a game specifies. Compare the graphics device itself and its dedicated memory, where shown, with the requirement. Rockstar cautions that some integrated graphics, mobile chipsets and AGP graphics cards may be incompatible, and that specifications not listed on its requirements page may not be supported.
Make a short checklist before opening the game’s requirements page: Windows edition and version, processor model, installed RAM, graphics-device model, dedicated video memory if shown, driver version and date, sound device if relevant, and available storage with its drive type. Keeping those details together makes it easier to spot a mismatch and avoids relying on memory or on a vague description such as “gaming laptop.” The tool reports identifying information; it does not itself decide whether Rockstar supports the combination.

Compare against the correct game and edition
Open Rockstar’s official system-requirements page for the exact game and PC edition you intend to install. Match every listed minimum: Windows version, processor, RAM, graphics card and video memory, storage capacity and type, and sound hardware where specified. Do not use requirements for a similarly named game or a different edition as a substitute.
The examples below show why that distinction matters. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V requirements page, last updated December 10, 2025, lists separate specifications for Enhanced and Legacy. Its Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Redemption pages also describe different games and their own requirement sets. The tables reproduce the published PC requirements; they are not benchmark results.

| Processor | Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590 | Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core | Intel Core i5 3470 or AMD X8 FX-8350 |

| Storage | 105GB SSD | 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive | 125GB HDD | 125GB HDD |
| Sound | DirectX 10-compatible audio | Not stated as a separate recommended requirement on Rockstar’s page | DirectX 10-compatible audio | Not stated as a separate recommended requirement on Rockstar’s page |
These columns are not interchangeable. For example, Enhanced’s listed minimum includes an SSD and a 4GB graphics card, whereas Legacy’s listed minimum specifies an HDD and a 1GB graphics card. If you are unsure which edition you own or plan to install, identify that first and use its column—not the less demanding-looking figures from another edition.
The storage wording also illustrates why checking only capacity is incomplete. Enhanced minimum calls for a 105GB SSD, while its recommended tier specifies a DirectStorage-compatible drive. Legacy lists 125GB HDD for both tiers. A drive with enough free space does not automatically satisfy a different drive-type requirement.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Source: Rockstar Games Customer Support, Red Dead Redemption 2 PC system requirements, last updated April 30, 2024.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8GB | 12GB |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB |
| Storage | 150GB | 150GB |
| Sound | DirectX-compatible sound | DirectX-compatible sound |
The listed storage capacity is the same for both tiers; Rockstar’s page does not specify a required drive type in these requirements. Do not infer that the game has no other account or connectivity conditions from that omission.

Check each category, not just the graphics card
A useful comparison is a checklist across all the game’s minimums. A mismatch in any required category matters; a strong GPU does not compensate for an unsupported operating system, insufficient RAM, or a missing required drive capacity.
- Operating system: Check the full edition and version requirement, including 64-bit wording or a specific Windows build. “Windows 10” alone may not satisfy a requirement for Windows 10 64-bit or build 1909 and above.
- Processor: Compare the processor model against one of the CPUs Rockstar lists. Do not decide compatibility solely from a processor’s model number or apparent age; the page gives supported reference models, not a universal conversion formula for comparing every CPU.
- Memory: Compare installed system RAM with the minimum. Keep RAM distinct from graphics memory: they are separate requirement lines.
- Graphics and VRAM: Confirm both the GPU model and any stated VRAM amount. A graphics chip appearing to have a large total memory figure in
dxdiagdoes not necessarily mean it has that much dedicated video memory. - Storage: Confirm both the space requirement and drive type, such as SSD or HDD, where Rockstar specifies one. Also make sure the needed capacity is actually available for installation.
- Sound: If the page lists a DirectX-compatible audio requirement, check the Sound tab and the audio setup. If the page does not state a separate sound item, do not assume an unstated requirement.
Rockstar’s minimum tier is a baseline, while the recommended tier is a more demanding reference. A PC that meets the minimum is not thereby guaranteed a particular frame rate, graphics preset or consistently smooth experience; Rockstar’s cited requirement pages do not promise one across every configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to read minimum and recommended tiers
Use the minimum column to answer the first question: does the PC match the published starting baseline for this exact title? Then use recommended as a separate, higher reference point. It is not another minimum to clear before installation, and being below recommended does not by itself mean the game cannot run. Conversely, meeting every minimum does not establish that a particular performance level will follow.
The gap between tiers differs by game and edition. For GTA V Enhanced, the listed memory moves from 8GB to 16GB dual-channel, and the graphics examples move from GTX 1630 or RX 6400 with 4GB VRAM to RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT with 8GB. For Red Dead Redemption 2, the lists move from 8GB to 12GB of memory and from GTX 770 2GB or R9 280 3GB to GTX 1060 6GB or RX 480 4GB. These are examples of the specific published tiers, not a formula for estimating how any unlisted component performs.
Read each row independently rather than averaging the system. A PC with more RAM than the minimum but a graphics card below the listed minimum still has a graphics mismatch; extra storage does not cancel a CPU shortfall. Record whether each line is met, not met, or unclear. “Unclear” is the right label when a model is absent from Rockstar’s list or when dxdiag shows shared rather than dedicated graphics memory.
Separate the game requirements from the launcher requirements
The Rockstar Games Launcher has its own system-requirements page, last updated May 1, 2024. Its listed minimums include Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850, 2GB memory, a DirectX 11-supported graphics card and 1GB of launcher space. See Rockstar Games Launcher system requirements.
Those launcher minimums do not replace the selected game’s requirements. Rockstar says supported games need additional installation space and may have additional requirements. A launcher that installs or opens is not evidence that a particular game meets its own minimums. Check the game page separately, then account for its install size and any specific storage type.

Account and internet conditions are another separate check. Rockstar’s game requirement pages describe Rockstar account and internet needs for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. A PC can meet the hardware baseline and still need the applicable sign-in or connection for those functions.
Think of the launcher and game as two distinct checks, not two ways to describe the same requirement. The launcher’s 1GB space figure is for the launcher; it does not include the additional space Rockstar says supported games need. Likewise, the launcher’s 2GB memory figure is not the RAM requirement for a game such as GTA V Enhanced or Red Dead Redemption 2. After checking that the launcher can run, return to the exact game page and compare its complete list.
What to do when one specification falls short
First verify that you are comparing the right device, edition and requirement tier. Then classify the result rather than treating every close match as a pass.

- Recheck the displayed component. Confirm the exact GPU or CPU model in
dxdiag; on systems with integrated and discrete graphics, ensure you are checking the device intended to run the game. - Compare to the minimum, not the recommended tier. If every minimum is met, the published baseline is met, but performance is not guaranteed. If a minimum is not met or the hardware is an unlisted configuration, compatibility is uncertain.
- Resolve storage and OS mismatches independently. Free space does not change an HDD into an SSD, and an operating-system label without the required edition/build does not prove the OS condition is met.
- Only then consider a change. A graphics upgrade is relevant if the GPU falls below the chosen game’s stated minimum; a drive upgrade or space cleanup is relevant when storage capacity or type is the mismatch. Do not buy or replace hardware before identifying the exact unmet requirement.
- Recheck the official page before installing or upgrading. Rockstar warns downloadable content and programming changes may alter requirements over time. Its Grand Theft Auto V page also warns that requirements can change.
If a component is not listed or Rockstar cautions that the device class may be incompatible, do not convert “looks stronger” into a guarantee. The published requirements are not a complete compatibility verdict for every combination of mobile chipsets, integrated graphics, older AGP cards and other unlisted hardware.
If the hardware check is borderline, pause before buying an upgrade. First make sure the title and edition are correct, the component name is exact, and the requirement line is being read correctly. In particular, do not treat shared graphics memory as dedicated VRAM or compare a drive’s free capacity while ignoring the listed drive type. The facts here identify relevant checks, but do not establish a universal method for converting every CPU or GPU model into an equivalent one.
When an upgrade is actually needed, tie it to the unmet line: a GPU upgrade addresses a graphics shortfall, while storage cleanup or a compatible drive addresses a space or drive-type mismatch. That does not mean either purchase alone guarantees compatibility; recheck the remaining OS, CPU, RAM, graphics, storage and sound lines after any change. A third-party optimizer is not necessary just to identify the basic specifications, since Windows includes dxdiag.
Use current official requirements for a final check
Requirements can change, so treat the dates above as the last-update dates reported on those Rockstar pages, not as a promise that the figures will remain unchanged. Before making a purchase or troubleshooting an installation, revisit the official page for the exact title and PC edition. Compare all its minimum lines, confirm storage and account conditions, and keep the recommended tier in view only as the more demanding reference point.

Frequently asked questions
How can I check if my PC meets a Rockstar game’s requirements?
Run dxdiag, note your Windows version, processor, RAM, graphics device and driver details, then compare them line by line with Rockstar’s official minimum requirements for the exact PC game and edition. Check available storage and drive type separately, and review any account or internet conditions.
Does meeting the minimum mean the game will run smoothly?
No. Rockstar’s minimum specifications are a baseline, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, graphics preset or consistently smooth experience. The recommended tier is a more demanding reference, but the requirements pages do not promise performance for every configuration.
Can I use the Rockstar Games Launcher requirements for the game?
No. The launcher’s own minimums cover the launcher, while supported games need additional installation space and may have their own additional requirements. Check both pages, and use the game’s specifications to judge the game itself.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIs shared graphics memory the same as dedicated VRAM?
No. Integrated graphics may use shared system memory, so an approximate total-memory figure in dxdiag does not prove that the graphics device has the dedicated VRAM a game lists. Compare the GPU model and dedicated video memory where shown.
Should I upgrade my GPU if my PC falls short?
Only after you identify the exact mismatch for the title and edition you plan to play. A graphics card upgrade may be relevant when the GPU is below the stated minimum, but it will not resolve an unsupported OS, insufficient RAM or a storage requirement. Check all requirement lines before purchasing anything.
Do the GTA V Enhanced and Legacy specifications apply to each other?
No. Rockstar lists them separately. Enhanced’s minimum includes an SSD and a 4GB graphics card, while Legacy’s minimum lists an HDD and a 1GB graphics card. Use the column for the edition you intend to install.
Do I need an internet connection if my PC meets the hardware requirements?
Hardware compatibility and account conditions are separate. Rockstar’s game requirements pages describe account and internet needs for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification, so check the applicable terms for the game and functions you plan to use.
