Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse the tracking system that matches the stage of your H-1B process: check a cap registration in your USCIS online account, a filed petition with USCIS Case Status Online, or a visa application made at a U.S. embassy or consulate through the Department of State’s CEAC checker. The numbers for these stages are different and cannot be substituted for one another.
If you are unsure which route applies, start with the notice or confirmation you received. Identify whether it came from USCIS as a petition receipt, relates to a cap registration in your USCIS account, or is connected to a visa application made at a consulate. Then use that stage’s official tracker and the identifier it requests.

First, identify which H-1B status you need
“H-1B status” can refer to three different records. A registration is the entry submitted for the H-1B cap process; a petition is a filing with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS); and a visa application is handled by a U.S. embassy or consulate after applying there. Each has its own tracker and identifier.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This distinction matters because the process does not use one universal H-1B tracking number. A registration confirmation is tied to the registration, a receipt number identifies a case USCIS has received, and the Department of State’s CEAC checker asks for details tied to a consular visa application. A number that is valid for one record may not locate another record at all.

| What you are tracking | Where to check | Identifier to use |
|---|---|---|
| H-1B cap registration | USCIS online account dashboard where the registration was submitted | Beneficiary confirmation number, for locating the registration in the account; it is not a Case Status Online receipt number |
| Filed H-1B petition with USCIS | USCIS Case Status Online | 13-character USCIS receipt number from the receipt notice, entered without hyphens |
| Visa application at a U.S. embassy or consulate | Department of State CEAC Nonimmigrant Visa Status Check | Application ID or Case Number, plus the application location, passport number, and first five letters of the surname requested by the checker |
Before opening a tracker, look at the notice or confirmation you have and note who issued it. A USCIS receipt notice points to a petition case; a registration confirmation belongs to the registration account; and a consular application is checked through CEAC. These records are handled by different systems, so one number will not necessarily find another stage.
A practical way to choose is to ask what action you are trying to follow: Did you submit an H-1B cap registration? Did USCIS receive a petition and issue a receipt notice? Or did you submit a visa application at an embassy or consulate? The answer determines the tracker. If you have more than one record because the process has moved forward, check the record that matches the question you have now rather than assuming the most recent number works everywhere.
Check an H-1B petition filed with USCIS
Find the receipt number
Use the receipt number printed on the USCIS receipt notice. USCIS describes it as a unique 13-character identifier made up of three letters followed by 10 numbers. Enter the characters without hyphens. A registration confirmation number is not a substitute.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If the petition was filed online, or a paper case was linked to a USCIS online account, the receipt number can also be found in that account. Use the account associated with the filing or linked case rather than trying unrelated numbers in the public tracker.
Check the notice carefully before entering anything. The required identifier is the receipt number, not any other number or reference that may appear on paperwork. Its expected format—three letters followed by 10 numbers—can help you distinguish it from a registration confirmation or a consular case identifier. Remove hyphens for the online lookup, but do not change the letters or digits.
Look up the case
- Open USCIS Case Status Online.
- Enter the receipt number from the notice, omitting its hyphens.
- Submit the number and read the result shown for that case.
This lookup is for a petition USCIS has received, or another immigration case with a USCIS receipt number. It is not the place to check whether a cap registration is listed in your account. The online case result is a case-status lookup; it does not replace the underlying notice or provide a guaranteed future decision date.
Keep the receipt notice available after you check. It is the reference for the petition’s receipt number and the form, category, and office information used when consulting processing-time estimates. If the case is also visible in a USCIS online account because it was filed online or linked to that account, the account may provide access to the receipt number and case notices as well.

If the lookup does not work
- Check that you copied the receipt number rather than a beneficiary confirmation number or another identifier.
- Confirm the format: three letters and 10 numbers, with hyphens removed.
- If the filing was online or linked to an account, check that account for the receipt number and case notices.
Do not switch to the registration dashboard simply because the public petition lookup did not return what you expected. First verify that you are asking about a filed petition and using the receipt number from its notice. If the number came from an H-1B registration confirmation, return to the USCIS account used for that registration instead. If you are asking about a visa application at a consulate, use CEAC and the information that checker requests.
Likewise, a USCIS receipt number is not the identifier requested by CEAC for a consular visa application. The systems cover different records. Re-entering the same petition number in a different tracker does not make it a registration number or an Application ID or Case Number.
Check an H-1B cap registration
Sign in to the USCIS online account used to submit the registration and check its dashboard and notices. The account is the route for registration status; the beneficiary confirmation number is associated with the registration, not a filed petition’s public case-status lookup.
USCIS’s FY 2025 H-1B Electronic Registration Process guidance says the beneficiary confirmation number “is only associated with the H-1B registration and cannot be used to track case status using Case Status Online.” In practical terms, do not enter that confirmation number into Case Status Online expecting it to return the registration result. USCIS describes the account as the place to view registration status and notices.
- Sign in to the USCIS account through which the registration was submitted.
- Open the registration and review its status and any notices displayed there.
- If you need alerts, USCIS says users can enable email or text notifications in the account. Registration notifications can be managed through the account profile.
Registration and petition are separate stages. A registration record is not tracked with the receipt number used for a petition, and the registration confirmation does not become a petition receipt number. If a petition is later filed and USCIS issues a receipt notice, use that receipt number for the petition lookup.
If your immediate question is “Where do I check my H-1B registration status?”, the answer is the account dashboard where that registration was submitted. The confirmation number is associated with the registration, but it does not replace signing in to the account to review the status and notices. This is different from checking a petition after USCIS has received a filing.
Account alerts are an optional way to receive registration notifications. USCIS says notifications can be enabled by email or text, and account users can manage notification settings through the profile. An alert does not change which system holds the registration record: return to the account dashboard to review the registration and any notices there.

Check an H-1B visa application at a U.S. consulate
If you applied for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate and want to check that visa application, use the Department of State’s CEAC Nonimmigrant Visa Status Check. This is separate from USCIS petition tracking: a USCIS receipt number is not the set of details the CEAC checker requests.
- Open the CEAC Nonimmigrant Visa Status Check.
- Select the location where you made the visa application.
- Enter the Application ID or Case Number, passport number, and the first five letters of the surname as requested.
- Submit the details to view the status shown for the consular application.
Use the location where the application was made and enter the identifying details as requested by the form. CEAC is the Department of State checker for the consular visa application; it is not a USCIS account or petition tracker.
This answers a common question: “Can I track my H-1B visa application with my receipt number?” Not through the CEAC lookup described here. CEAC asks for the application location and the Application ID or Case Number along with passport and surname details. A USCIS petition receipt number belongs to a different record and is not a replacement for those requested fields.
Because the CEAC lookup requires passport information as well as an application identifier, use the official Department of State page and enter details only there. Confirm that you selected the location where the visa application was made and that you are using the identifier requested by CEAC, not a USCIS receipt number or H-1B registration confirmation.
Use processing-time estimates carefully
USCIS processing-time estimates are selected using the form, category, and office information associated with the receipt notice. They are estimates, not a case-specific promise or a decision date. USCIS notes that processing-time metrics and office listings are being adjusted, and its processing-time FAQ says estimates may change.
- Open the live USCIS Case Processing Times tool.
- Select the form, category, and office that match the receipt notice and case.
- Use the displayed estimate as a general processing reference, not a prediction of when an individual case will be decided.
- If the case appears outside normal processing, check the tool for the inquiry date or whether an inquiry link is available. USCIS provides e-Request — Check Case Processing for case-processing inquiries when the applicable route is available.
Do not rely on a processing-time figure saved from an older visit as though it were current. The figures can change, and the relevant category and office matter. The live tool and its inquiry options are more useful than comparing a case with a broad estimate that may use different criteria.
To make a useful comparison, match the information from the case rather than choosing a nearby or familiar category. The processing-time tool organizes estimates by form, category, and office. A result for a different form, category, or office is not a meaningful estimate for your case, even if it appears relevant at a glance. Use the receipt notice to identify the case information and check the live tool again when you need an up-to-date estimate.

If the tool indicates that an inquiry date has arrived, or shows an inquiry link for the case, follow the available route. USCIS’s e-Request page is for case-processing inquiries when that option applies. The presence of an estimate alone does not establish that a case is outside normal processing, and an estimate should not be treated as a promised completion date.
There is no single processing-time number that applies to every H-1B case. USCIS says the metrics and office listings are being adjusted and that estimates can change. For that reason, avoid using an old number or an unsourced figure to predict when a particular case will be decided. The live USCIS tool is the place to check the current estimate and any applicable inquiry information.

Receipt numbers, registration confirmations, passport numbers, and application details identify sensitive immigration records. Enter them only in the official government portal for the stage you are checking: USCIS for registration or a USCIS petition, and CEAC for a consular visa application. Avoid posting screenshots or full identifiers publicly, and do not provide passport details to an unofficial status-checking site.
If you are helping someone else, make sure you are using the correct account and that you have permission to access the case information. Keep the receipt notice or registration confirmation available while checking so you can distinguish the identifier printed on it from numbers for another stage.
It can help to keep the three kinds of identifiers separate in your own records: registration confirmation for the registration, USCIS receipt number for a petition case, and the Application ID or Case Number plus requested identity details for a consular visa application. Do not assume that one identifier can be used in all three places. When you finish, avoid sharing a screenshot that exposes a receipt number, passport number, or other personal details.
Quick route when you are unsure
- You have an H-1B registration confirmation and want the registration result: sign in to the USCIS account used to submit the registration.
- You have a USCIS receipt notice for a filed petition: enter its 13-character receipt number, without hyphens, in Case Status Online.
- You applied for a visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate: use CEAC’s nonimmigrant checker with the location and identity details it asks for.
- You want to know whether a USCIS case is outside normal processing: match the notice’s form, category, and office in the live USCIS processing-time tool and follow any inquiry option shown.
If none of those descriptions fits, identify the document you have before trying another portal. The issuing system and the kind of filing are better clues than the phrase “H-1B status” on its own. A registration result, a petition case update, and a consular visa application update are related to the same broad immigration process, but they are not the same tracking record.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my H-1B case status?
First identify whether you mean a cap registration, a petition filed with USCIS, or a visa application made at a consulate. Use the USCIS account dashboard for a registration, USCIS Case Status Online with the receipt number for a petition, or the Department of State CEAC nonimmigrant checker for a consular visa application.
Best Value
Where do I check my H-1B registration status?
Sign in to the USCIS online account used to submit the registration and review its dashboard and notices. The beneficiary confirmation number is associated with the registration, but USCIS says it cannot be used to track case status through Case Status Online.
How can I track an H-1B petition filed with USCIS?
Use the 13-character receipt number on the USCIS receipt notice in Case Status Online. Enter three letters followed by 10 numbers and omit hyphens. If the petition was filed online or linked to an account, the receipt number may also be available there.
Can I track my H-1B visa application with my USCIS receipt number?
No. For a visa application made at a U.S. embassy or consulate, use the Department of State CEAC nonimmigrant status checker. It requests the application location, an Application ID or Case Number, passport number, and the first five letters of the surname.

Check which document or account you have. A USCIS receipt notice gives the receipt number for a petition; a registration confirmation relates to the registration account; and CEAC uses the Application ID or Case Number and other requested details for a consular application. These identifiers are not interchangeable.
How do I know whether my USCIS case is outside normal processing time?
Use the live USCIS processing-time tool and select the form, category, and office that match the case information on the receipt notice. Check whether the tool shows an inquiry date or link. Estimates can change and are not case-specific promised decision dates.
Are H-1B status updates and passport details safe to enter online?
Enter identifiers only in the official government portal for the stage you are checking: USCIS for a registration or USCIS petition, and CEAC for a consular visa application. Avoid posting full identifiers or passport details publicly or entering them on unofficial status-checking sites.
The Bottom Line
Use the tracker that matches the record: USCIS account for an H-1B cap registration, Case Status Online and the receipt number for a USCIS petition, or CEAC and its requested application details for a consular visa application. Keep the identifiers separate, and use USCIS’s live processing-time tool—not an old estimate—to check whether an inquiry option is available.
