Check the transit agency that operates your route first: open its official service-alert page or app, search for your route or stop, and read the notice for the affected section, detour, stop changes, and times. Then check your trip in the agency’s planner and verify live arrivals close to departure. An alert explains the announced change; a planner helps assess your particular journey; real-time information shows what is happening now.
Start with the transit agency’s alert
A general road-closure notice tells you that a street is closed, but the transit agency is the best place to confirm whether and how its service will change. Agencies may label the relevant page “service alerts,” “travel alerts,” “rider alerts,” “detours,” or, for rail work, “trackwork.”

- Identify the bus route or train line, the stop or station you will use, and the direction of travel.
- Open the operating agency’s official website or app and go to its alerts or detours section.
- Search or filter by route or stop if that option is available, then open the notice itself.
- Check the notice’s effective dates and hours, affected streets or stations, direction, and any closed or replacement stops. Follow its temporary boarding instructions.
Do not assume a closure affects the whole route. A detour may apply only to one segment, one direction, or particular hours. Transport for NSW says its travel alerts help riders check whether a trip is affected by current or planned disruptions and offers route or stop search: Transport for NSW travel alerts. Houston METRO also lets riders view alerts by route and recommends checking its alerts and detours before travel: METRO Houston current service alerts and detours.
Check the trip you actually plan to take
Enter your origin, destination, date, and intended departure or arrival time in the agency’s trip planner. Compare the suggested itinerary with the alert: check whether it uses an affected stop or segment and whether a different route or boarding point is needed. A planner is useful for evaluating your journey, but the alert is where to confirm the agency’s stated detour or stop closure; available sources do not promise that every planner reflects every disruption.

Agencies may offer trip planning alongside alerts. Houston METRO provides a trip planner, and Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) offers trip planning with bus and train among its mode choices: VTA rider tools.
Verify conditions close to departure
Shortly before leaving, check live arrivals or vehicle status for the stop or station you will use. This can help you assess current operation, while the alert provides the announced arrangement and its scheduled coverage. TriMet describes trip planning, real-time arrivals, and alerts for delays, detours, or disruptions in its Trip Tools; VTA also provides real-time lookup by route, direction, and stop.

Set up route notifications if available
Notifications can deliver updates without requiring you to keep reopening the alert page. Check whether your agency offers alerts for your selected route and whether they are sent by app, text, or email. Options differ by agency: Utah Transit Authority (UTA) describes route-specific text or email notifications and its app on its Service Alerts page; the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers text or email updates for selected routes through its official site. TriMet lists website, text, phone, and email options on its Trip Tools page.

What if the trip is by train?
A nearby road closure does not by itself establish that a train will be affected. Look for an agency notice about the rail line or station, station access, or a substitute bus arrangement. If an alert directs riders to replacement buses or a different boarding point, follow the notice and confirm the revised journey in the planner. The relevant effect depends on what the local agency announces.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the alert and planner do not agree
Use the alert’s specific instructions for the stated detour or stop closure, and contact the agency through its customer information channel if the notice does not make clear how it affects your origin, destination, or travel time. Check live arrivals again before setting out. Alert pages, planners, and real-time tools serve different purposes, and agencies do not all offer the same features or update every tool at the same time.
